This guy in my town is the epitome of a scalpfaggot. He opened a small flea market in town, started off everything very reasonably priced. I got an untested n64 from him sans a av cable for like $10, gamble paid off and it works fine. After a couple of months he must have seen an episode of Storage Wars or some shit because his prices went up 200-300% overnight. Now he tries to pass off eBay pricing on basically everything, sometimes more than that. What really pisses me off is he spams the ever living fuck out of Craigslist, more than 10 posts per day on the collectible sections like vidya and toys. Wanna know why there's a retro bubble? It's funny; I work with a friend who runs a flea market stand that deals in this stuff. We do Pricewatch and ebay aggregate pricing; undercut the average by about 10%. We ONLY sell systems that we have fully cleaned and tested, and come with full working cables and a controller.

For example: We sell NES systems with all cables, new 72 pin adapters and a controller for 40 bucks.

We get people in all the time with this kind of crap: just the other day we had a guy come in with an SNES with it's full original box and a handful of sports games with the original boxes... absolutely everything was water damaged. The system, the boxes, the manuals.

He wanted 200 dollars for it. Because "Ya'll easily sell this to a collector for 250-300."

The one we run is a full on stand, not a table. We have a tax licence and it's lockable and everything.

Basic pointers:

1) Know what you are selling. This cannot be stressed enough though it sounds stupidly simple and obvious. Research is your best friend.

2) Don't expect to make money for a while. It's a business; if you are in the black within 6 months, you are going to be ahead of the curve. If you want to do a stand instead of a table, expect to sink at least 2-3 grand into it as startup money. That's for inventory, furniture, equipment, rent, everything.

3) Develop a think skin. You will have to deal, fairly regularly, with people who can best be described as highly suspect. For example: non-english speaking Chinese immigrants that want to sell you 50 copies of a "brand new" 360 or PS3 game for 5 dollars each, which are on a spindle instead of in boxes. Then get angry when you tell them no.

>>832887

Honestly, it is my experience that since storage wars and it's ilk have come out that the vast majority of people don't particularly think about it at all. If you want to find stuff inexpensively, the best bet is to invest in learning how to fix damaged stuff and buy that from people, then fix it yourself.

The huge majority of the stuff we sell is stuff we rebuilt and repaired.

Good shit, my nigga.

I fucking love my local flea market, because their policies are completely unbiased. There are no taxes or licensing involved, not even for the guys that are trying to run a legit business. Also, rental fees are the same for everybody ($25 per table for the whole day -- so if you wanted to rent 3 tables, that would be $75, no more no less, and you keep 'em for the whole day).

And I'm all too familiar with thickskinnery. I currently work in a job with very rigid policies, and for some reason the place attracts the bottom rung of humanity, and suffice to say, I've seen it all.

Gosh, I'm so fucking stoked.
