If you can handle the form factor it is. For faster action games, the SP cramps my hand. But if I'm playing something like advance wars, or an RPG, the Micro looks so much better.

If you're gonna play GBA only, why not just use a DS Lite? The GBA SP is great, but the DS Lite screen is much better and the buttons are laid out better. It also has a headphone jack, which is absent on the GBA SP. Besides, a DS Lite is cheaper than a GBA SP last time I checked.

The only reason to get a GBA SP is if you're going to play Gameboy or Gameboy Color games.

It has the worst ergonomics of any device ever created, other than that its pretty good

>> No.8289204

As someone who owned both versions of the GBA (Both the original and the SP) I prefer the original, only because the SP gives the cramps and is ergonomically fucked as other people mentioned.

Now, I do believe that the reason why they went for it was for the 'pocket' factor, but also because the screen could be scratched (And no one wanted to pay for a screen protector at the time, so for children, it would be better if it was possible to close it) That of course, ignores the fact that there were many children that broke the upper part of the SP.

easy to fuck up?
not really if you are careful.
they sell ITA "ready" shells (you still need to do some cuts, but very easy cuts).
if you buy an IPS ready shell (like I did) then you'll need to cut a lot and while it isn't exactly hard, it isn't easy without the right tools and takes a lot of time.
and as >>8289604 said, there are installation videos already so guide you, but I suggest you to follow funnyplaying instructions since I've seen some installs that cut other parts of the shell instead of what funnyplaying tells you to cut.
but it's worth the hassle.
colors are very accurate to ags-101, the screen size is the same as stock and so it's the ghosting. no ags-101 blur.

>> No.8289635

Not OP but I'd like to ask my own questions here:

I can get a backlit original GBA. would that be better than the flip one? I don't really know if the lithium batteries are to be trusted. At least rechargeable ones are easy to come by.
Should I get a DS instead, to take advantage of the DS library too?
How likely am I to get fucked by buying GBA carts in 2021? Do they still save? Are bootleg carts bad or something?
Are the "retro handhelds" worth it? (I assume they aren't, but I want more opinions).

I'm sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm a retard and my last console was a SNES.

>I can get a backlit original GBA. would that be better than the flip one? I don't really know if the lithium batteries are to be trusted. At least rechargeable ones are easy to come by.
Stick to the original AGB. Provided the world still exists and humanity has the current tech level it has now in 10-20 years you should probably be able to get AA batteries with relative ease.
>How likely am I to get fucked by buying GBA carts in 2021? Do they still save? Are bootleg carts bad or something?
There are bootlegs, but for the most part you can get legit, used carts for a reasonable price. The majority of GBA games switched to FRAM I believe, which does not need a save battery as well. Unless you purchased it in person from a store, don't expect to get legit copies of the Pokemon or Metroid games.
>Are the "retro handhelds" worth it? (I assume they aren't, but I want more opinions).
Depends on what you are looking for in a handheld. >>8269210 is a good source of info on what is good and what is trash. I myself use a mix of the real deal and a Retroflag GPi for handheld gaming and multiple home console stuff in the case of the GPi.

I bought one of these used and immediately returned it because the speakers were absolute garbage quality and there was no headphone jack. You had to buy a dongle to use headphones and in 2012 it wasn't easy to get ahold of one.

DS lite is the ideal way to play GBA, in my opinion. Especially since you can use a flash cart to boot GBA games.

and yet, the debate about symmetrical vs asymmetrical sticks never ends.
i'm not saying that the dsi has shit controls (only the ds lite with it's very muchy dpad and buttons), they are actually the best.
but its positioning is not suited to play gba games.
a modded gba is better at the job, specially with the new ITA kit that uses a dsi bottom screen, so you get the best of both worlds.

3DS XL injection with integer scaling. The actual screen size ends up being comparable to real GBA screens while still being sharp and bright, and the form factor isn't fucksmall like the SP or Micro. You get the benefit of having the games digitally so that you can backup/import your saves whenever you want without another device and you can load whatever roms you want. The only things you're missing are the link cable (as if anyone has local friends with GBAs these days) and special cartridges. WarioWare Twisted is the only one most people care about using the features of anyway, but there's a special mGBA build with gyro support that you have to run a patch on your 3DS' firmware to use that you can play it on anyway. Get yourself a monster hunter grip for maximum comfy
