Half Life is about as far from a retro FPS as you can get without limiting them to two weapons and halving the height of their jump.
If you like retro FPS', then DON'T play Half Life. You'll find it terminally boring and distracted, which it is

I'd disagree with >>8286790, i think it holds up pretty well even if you aren't much into Retro FPS or know about them, as it influenced and shaped the industry somewhat, so it plays like your average 1990-2005 FPS, except with more goodies to use than the 2 weapon limit standard they have now.
With that in mind you will probably lose interest and question if it was worth you money around a few chapters, as always Half-Life was testing everything it could, including the chapters, for me i started to lose interest around Lambda Core and usually for all players it dies at the begin of Xen because of the bullshit factory levels, even with that majority of the game has secret rooms, areas, NPC lockers, incredible backgrounds, scenes, so you will probably enjoy replaying at least the first few chapters after you encounter the HECU.

It's more realistic than say, Doom or Quake, but it's a supremely fantastical game, the level design makes preciously little fucking sense from a realistic standpoint, Black Mesa is a huge pile of cartoonish as fuck OSHA nightmares which often makes no goddamn sense if you stop and think about whatever facility you're currently in. There's lots of absurd death trap machinery and structures existing entirely to be conducive towards thing like Super Mario Bros. tier platforming and semi-Quake-like combat, ergo they're designed only for quasi-arcadish videogame set-pieces.

What was actually realistic about Half-Life was some of the aesthetics, as well as enemies working in groups against you, but even that gets real goofy when you stop to look at it. In terms of realism, Half-Life falls squarely between Duke Nukem 3D and Goldeneye 007.

It's better than the second game because I get bored and drop that one. Only recommend to people interested in historically influential games though. It's easier to recommend something like Doom or Quake for fun. Half-life feels like it takes more commitment to get into.

Yes, they generally still think it's good. It will only be "good" rather than unique or genre-defining to a modern player though, since all FPS games adapted to be more like Half-Life than Doom for like a 16 year span afterward and still mostly are.

I'll bite, but I am sure this is a troll thread. Yes, it's well worth playing if you are a fan of classic FPS, the history of video games or just good game in general. I would suggest waiting for a Steam sale and picking up the whole series for under 5 dollars (Half- Life, HL Opposing Force, Blue Shift, HL2, ect, ect). Black Mesa is a good game, but it's very different. I would suggest playing it AFTER the original(s)

This is the worst "retro" shooter you can ever get (I don't even know if it qualifies as retro). I recommend going after some other games from the mid-nineties instead of late-nineties: Doom, Heretic, Quake, Duke 3D, Blood all do a better job at level design, enemy design and visuals. Yes, even the visuals. The rooms in Half-Life looks all the same (boring gray concrete all over the place) and the level design is a linearity galore. It's brain dead by oldschool standards.

If you want to pin the blame of who started "cinematic brown military shooter" that falls squarely on MOHAA. And that's coming from someone who grew up on and loves that game. Playing it again recently I realized it has literally all the trappings of a modern AAA shooter, except regenerating health. It should come as no surprise that the devs (2015 Inc) ended up leaving EA's tent shortly after and founding their own studio called... Infinity Ward
