Worth noting that the SNES is actually an 8-bit machine, as it's CPU has an 8-bit data bus. The PC Engine is called an 8-bit machine due to having an 8-bit data bus. Even if we count the register size, which the SNES does support 16-bit wide registers, the Master System also supports 16-bit registers (and many more than the SNES, at that), and the Master System, along with other Z80-based devices, are still called 8-bit machines due to their 8-bit data buses regardless of register size. So, too, must the SNES be called 8-bit.

How did Nintendo screw up so badly? And why do so many continue to attempt to defend such a shoddy, underperformant hardware?

because the games actually look and sound better than geneshit and PC Enshit

Ah yes, I love low quality, muffled samples. Fuck FM synth and CD quality audio, dogshit PCM is what I want. Dogshit PCM that was only intended as a stopgap solution for early games, bear in mind. CD audio was what the sound chip was built for, but Nintendo gave up on that deal.

Speed's 3Mhz if FastROM is used.

They outsold and outdid the competition, that's how.

Bits weren't the actual thing that matters. Simultaneous screen colors, screen effects, spite count, and independently-moving backgrounds were what all three main systems had in common, so they were "16-bit", and that's that.

PC Engine actually didn't have multi-layer backgrounds

Fastrom requires special helper chips in the cartridge and cannot be considered "stock". The stock speed of the SNES is 2.68 MHz.

>>8286386
no it's not. it's just a faster speed ROM and maps in a different area of the CPU address space. Nintendo did this setup because of parts availability at the time when it was launched.

Nintendo has never made a console that wasn't marred by some fatal bottleneck. They could've made the perfect game system several times and declined to do so. Despite that, people still defend their laziness & greediness because "soul" or some other abstract reason

Well you can be like Sony and have no PS5s to sell.
Every system ever made is "bottlenecked" too.
The Genesis has generally shitty sound compared to its contemporaries. The PS1 has no Z, and a shitty CD drive(a REALLY shitty CD drive). The 64 used carts like a retard, the PS2(champion of game consoles i remind you) has a shitty development space and again a shitty disc drive. X-Box is just a gimped PC. PC stopped being relevant, and wasn't even a contender until 1997-8 or so.

Only arcades stand close to perfect, because no expense was to be spared. When you're selling a commercial machine for $3K+, you can put all the bells and whistles you want into it and take the time to make sure it works.
Home gaming never actually caught up to arcades. Everyone tried too.

the SNES is probably the worst designed system they've ever made both from a programming and reliability standpoint. the others don't have any major glaring flaws.

Most problems with the Genesis stem from Sega's unnecessary love of backward compatibility when there's a lot of features it could have had if half the VDP die wasn't taken up with the legacy Master System video modes.

My point still stands.
Here's a tip for those of you that don't know. Consumer electronics are by and large, GARBAGE. They cheap out and build down to a price for most things because consumers are the low rung of the ladder. More specialized gear and enthusiast gear tends to be better. Just compare a PS3 or PS4 MOBO to an actual decent one from Asus or Gigabyte or better Foxconn boards and you'll see. The PS3 was a loss-leader and STILL built like a piece of shit. Compare any console power supply or power area, to a well-made PSU from Seasonic or something.
Or if you REALLY wanna have some fun, look at the board in a piece of medical/scientific equipment, and compare it to the iPhone. The iPhone is a piece of garbage. The PCB even creaks when it flexes.

Game consoles are made down to a price, and it always shows somewhere in how they perform. The top-spec item in an SNES was its Sony DSP. Those Ricoh CPUs were low-tier.

i will say the original Gameboy was pretty sturdy and well built, just that sometimes as they've aged they develop loose connecting wires to the LCD that have to be re-soldered
