They excelled in different ways, SNES can't touch Steel Empire or Thunder Force IV, but Genesis can't touch Chrono Trigger, FFs. I like to think of the Genesis as the more badass console the yamaha soundchip is crack, and SNES the more soulful one. Late SNES titles (lots of games made after '94) such as SMRPG, DKC2, and one of my favorites Gundam Wing Endless Duel are very good looking perfectly polished and some of the best games ever made
