The two best games on the GBA share the same engine.

Fusion has the best atmosphere of any 2D metroid game that isn't called "Super" or "Dread". That's worth more than being able to get the varia suit early with bomb jumps, as cool as that is.

Wait I can't fucking read. I somehow thought >>8274916 was talking about Zero Mission. I hate Fusion because it's awful on every level, fuck Adam, fuck the boring environments, fuck the shitty music, fuck the lack of exploration, fuck the ending for copying Super, and especially fuck the X parasites because they're just weak substitutes for Metroids. Fuck you Fusion fucking god dammit.

It's worse than Super and much, much better than ZM. Hell at least Fusion has its own identity instead of failing horribly at being a clone of a game it's not even the remake of.

Look at the bosses in those games. Some of the best pixelart Nintendo ever put out. Really makes me sad knowing there's barely any senior pixel artists left in the company. Incredible games btw, they stand out for how ambitious they were within their series, I miss when Nintendo wasn't afraid to take chances. Also amazing how they got the console churning out something so good-looking and specially sounding so early in the GBA's lifespan, really complemented their flair. Were there any more games made in this engine?

>Metroid discussion
Zero Mission had an almost Harmony of Dissonance-esque downgrade in soundtrack and atmosphere, and even at the time I was underwhelmed by the de-emphasized action compared to Fusion's boss encounters and challenge, nearly all it's got going for it is the sequence breaking stuff which is cool but I was never hugely into. Still it also delivered some really cool boss portrayals. Kraid looks so badass and expressive in Zero. I miss big studios making pixel games.

Does anyone with GBA hacking knowledge know if it would be possible to re-insert Wario into Metroid Fusion or insert Samus into Wario Land 4? Both scenarios sound hilarious to me for some reason.

Oh I definitely prefer Super's soundtrack, I was just saying Zero Mission has some pretty good music. Also never understood why some people don't like the SNES sound chip, it sounds great to me.

>> No.8275549

>>8275532
Oh well, I'm not such a big fan of Zero Mission's OST but fair. I'll concede getting the Metroid chanting for the Chozo ruins on the GBA was amazing, and the Kraid's lair theme remix is pretty sweet.

>never understood why some people don't like the SNES sound chip, it sounds great to me.
It's mostly a SNES vs Genesis thing, right? Guess it's too sample-heavy, compared to the more electronic sound of the Genesis? When it sounds bad or flat it sounds REALLY flimsy and cheap, but I guess Genesis' can sound very clunky and grainy as well. It's all about the individual OST imo.

>> No.8275571

>>8275549
I like how the Genesis sounds as well, but to me a lot Genesis games sound very similar. But that's probably just cuz I haven't played many Genesis games.

>> No.8275585

>>8275571
It's kinda harder to make Genesis soundtracks sound distinct, but when they manage it, it's always great. Same way, the SNES games with the most work put into the sound and where the adpatability of the samples into atmospheres shines are truly great. I think there's amazing music on both, even more so if you dig deep into more obscure games.

The whole "Genesis is superior" has got to be some musician or sound engineer thing I don't get honestly.

Most fun Metroid to 100%. But it's way too short and it feels like a copy of Super in a lot of ways. Fusion has a lot of uniqueness going for it even if it isn't nearly as fun.

>> No.8275970

>>8275150
Yeah, though Burenia in Dread is Fusion-level IMO. Arteria also had me thinking the music was going to be as good as Fusion's throughout the game, shame that wasn't the case.

>> No.8276079

>>8275373
Music is part of why ZM utterly fails at building any atmosphere compared to Super actually. It's like Super without a shred of dignity to it, worse exploration, worse backtracking, and the things it does uniquely, the all-new added segments, are the parts that are universally hated. It has no upsides to playing it instead of Super again.

One of the other really masterful things about Wario Land 4, pixel art aside, is how hey managed to make a soundtrack that actually sounds better with GBA compression.

Feels better to play and it's shorter so even non-speed-trannies can finish it in one enjoyable session.
I recognize that the world isn't as good as Super's, but once I start playing it, I can't stop. Zero Mission Samus is the most satisfying character to control in any game, in my opinion.

not to mention whoever did that "HQ" version just slapped the original samples on and paid no attention to mixing/mastering that actually needs to be done when working with samples with dynamic range and at full resolution

Wario Land 4 is THE best game on Game Boy Advance, bar none. It is the perfect game. A bonafide 10/10. Infinitely replayable, dripping with soul and irreverence. The height of old-school punk rebel Nintendo and R&D1.

Metroid Fusion... Eh, it's not bad, but it shouldn't be compared to Wario Land 4 beyond sharing an engine. It's a rather tepid entry on behalf of Sakamoto. Does Fusion have an entire book dedicated to singing its praises? No? Didn't think so, bub.
