I can barely remember the specific sounds.

The generic pings, almost like a "douot" sound.
A lot of games had it as part of the idle screens, sometimes for part of powerup pickups sounds, character select, etc. Any arcade with prize games DEFINITELY had that sound. A lot of casinos probably still use it.

There was always a "psheshp" everywhere. Used mostly for collision; fighting, cars crashing, whatever.

Jingling coins. The sound of tokens was never as satisfying as quarters.

Even reading the other answers ITT I can barely remember them. Just the cacophony.

Capcom, whatever sound chip they used in their old arcade boards. Games like Gun Smoke and Ghouls'n'Goblins had the most ear-tickling sounds ever.

First time I heard of YMO was last month, listening to Rydeen, and now I can't stop seeing them posted everywhere. Knew about Sakamoto for years, but never YMO. Did they spike in popularity recently, or was it just always around?

I can't say I've ever been in a "huge" arcade, anon, and most were set up not to annoy shoppers nearby. The one in the nearest mall to where I was had a row of ski-ball machines that would call out "Smile and play Smartball!" loud enough to reach the mall floor.

HARD BLOW! HARD BLOW!

But at arcades with a ticket section, like most of them I frequented growing up, it was the goddamn Tower of Power. If you've ever spent a significant amount of time in an arcade that had that thing, its ambient noise is forever drilled into your brain.

I can still hear the deep bass sounds from the Final Fight cabinet running through its attract mode. Haggar yelling doing the spinning clothesline. The guns firing in Afterburner with "FIRE". Passing the checkpoints in V.R.Racing. People being amazed at the combos in MVC2. Hadouken and Sonic Booms thrown. SkeeBall in the far background. Thugs dying and the thumb pointing to go forward in Double Dragon. The reversed sound into "X-Men" of the 6-player cab. People stomping to a beat in DDR. The recoil of the plastic guns on the Time Crisis 2 cabinets "ACTION".
