Thoughts on this game?

I don't like how the levels are designed to be so boxy and linear. Its just 'run through and win battles', but I guess its an RPG and that's how most of them are like.

a fun and soulful game with incredible music, charming characters, great graphics, silly humour, and a neat battle system
shame we've never got a proper square sequel but both the paper mario and m&l games brought forward a lot of its spirit for their games

however i do know that it's kind of like a prototype to the paper mario series (and also the alphadream mario RPG series I guess)

For what it was it is a great amazing game but given it was meant to be an entry level type of game I rarely in the mood to replay it for the battles. Exploring the world was far more fun.

That was kinda the point. The amazing Timed Hit system was put in just to give players something to do so they can understand it better. They were scare that action game players wouldn't understand that you meant to idle during the combat and just watch the results as per standard of most RPGs. So yea, one of the best systems to have in a RPG game literally exist just to give people who are clueless something to do while they wait for the battle to end. It almost as if people want to play games and not watch a movie back then.

It's a great entry level RPG that does have it's challenging parts, relatively speaking. On top of that it's got fun, charming visuals and a great sense of humor and amazing music. It's a must play.

It gets bonus points from me for being an RPG that doesn't waste your time.

piss easy game up until the final boss fight, then there's actually some challenge. otherwise, the areas you go through are quite bland and boring. the various hub zones are decent for about 2 minutes and then it just becomes kind of dull.

story is surprisingly decent for such a short and quick game. it's a decent game, but i think it's reallly overrated by some people here.

i also prefer paper mario but it's a minor refinement of the formula. mostly the timing feels better synced to the animation
and SMRPG has advantages like an actual party with their own health and equipment
