Secret Mission is pretty shitty, but the first Asterix is amazing and probably the best exclusive release for the system. The only arguable downside is that it was made by a japanese team with probably almost no familiarity with the series beyond a basic brief, and the result borders on surreal wackiness in the later levels

>man Great Baseball blew NES Baseball out of the water
A game that used a 128k ROM was better than a game that used a 16k ROM? You don't say.

>> No.8272469

>>8272451
But then again if it was made in Europe it would be a typical Amiga-style Eurojank platformer and be complete trash to play.

>> No.8272475

>>8272463
the original Mark III Great Baseball was a launch title from 85 and used only a 32k ROM. they considered it too crude for North American release so we got a different and completely remade game with a larger ROM.

>> No.8272492

>>8272469
Not gonna argue that, but the sequel was also japanese-developed and it's definitely weaker than the somewhat solid Nintendo Asterix games

>> No.8272512 [DELETED]

A lot of Master System games were developed in Europe since that was its biggest market and they were the usual Zniggy shit you would expect.

This is /vr/, a board about 25 year old games on average; "information" has a very limited value here. You should generally hope for worthwhile discussion instead, but sadly these threads rarely amount to little else than simple lists padded with bait and shitposting.

I had never even heard of it until emulation became a thing and I've been playing home consoles since the Atari 2600 era. It really just wasn't a thing here, we went straight from the 2600 to the NES, then from there you either got a Genesis or a Super Nintendo and the era of console wars began.

>> No.8275756

>>8275705
To be fair the library was pretty shocking in the 80's when it mattered. A lot of the best games were being released in the middle of 4th-gen

Emulate sega arcade games and maybe play game gear. Master System is horrible.

>> No.8275771

>>8275705
Nintendo absolutely ruled the roost, there was no way in hell it was going to compete because of how aggressive and popular Nintendo were. Sega only got a foot in the door with the Mega Drive and even then it took a year or two for them to really get the ball rolling. Home computers were much more popular in Europe and Sega introduced the master system at an affordable price and with a good library whereas Nintendo didn’t really focus on Europe as much

>> No.8275773

>>8275756
Nah, there's a sweet spot around 1990-1991. Further into 4th gen they started missing the point and releasing more and more simple downgrades of 16-bit games instead of original games or reimaginings tailor-made to the system's strengths and weaknesses.

I think I remember reading somewhere that they were given that look to make them stick out and to make customers know they were all for the same system instead of the hodgepodge of designs for the NES at times but I’ll be damned if i knew

Ok, but we're discussing good releases for the system, not the best versions to play each particular game (which would trim out a good chunk of any /vr/ system's library).

Speaking of, the Ghouls n Ghosts "port" (developed by early Arc Systems Works) is an interesting version of the game despite the massive technical downgrade.

>> No.8279562

Sega completely fucked up the initial Euro release, in addition to their design mistakes.

Had they not gone full retard, they might've been even more successful, enough so that they would've come close to Nintendo's numbers for the NES.

>>8278918

The cards were a cost saving measure for small 32k games that didn't need a mapper. Since Sega had a lot less market share than Nintendo cost saving was a higher priority; Master System carts often had the standard Sega mapper integrated into the ROM chip as another way of reducing costs.
