It sort of has it but they really try their best to fuck it up. The game starts off with you finding a video recording from a Federation troop squad because that part of 343 Guilty Spark was cool. Right after that you go and find a resident of the planet who loredumps you and treats you as their planet's savior and explains everything in game mechanic terms like it's a JRPG. You can tell they didn't really get what made stumbling into a new world in a Metroid game and simply getting around work so well, which is odd because they DO have environmental storytelling and the logs like the first Prime game even within those areas, yet slapped that shit on top.

I have only barely touched Prime 1 past the Orpheon but I'm almost done with 2 (I got the disc for 2 first so I started on that sooner) and I gotta say I think 2 is more polished by far. The scan visor and HUD just look better, and I prefer (so far, I'm at the sky fortress in 2) the theme of 2 mostly just because it's more original where 1 is trying to kinds resemble Super a bit too hard (Encounter Ridley on space station, it blows up, land on rainy planet, go into cave).

Prime 1 definitely apes Super Metroid, but it does it so well that I can't be mad about it. It recreates that sort of atmosphere in a beautiful 3D environment and still brings many of its own ideas to the table.

Also, scan visor is definitely personal preference. 2's goes too hard for the user friendly look and I don't like it at all. Plus there's issues with how it's based on highlighting things in colors if an object is already that color. An example would be the red circle you have to scan to activate the dark portals, because it's already red. Obviously something you'll figure out quick and not an issue ever again, but still an inherent issue.

I played Echoes first, and then got Prime 1, and then went through Echoes a second time to get 100% of scans. To me they felt very similar quality wise, aside from the obvious setting and weapon/skill differences. If anything, I seem more fond of Echoes but both are great games. For some reason, I found the fetch quest at the end of Echoes more tolerable than Prime's

Good game. The atmosphere seems like it will be oppressive and the light/dark mechanic seems like it will be frustrating, but it really never ends up being that bad and the game gives you tools to deal with it reasonably.
I never got too far as a kid for the reasons above and I'm most of the people that negatively view the game are mostly going on these surface level concerns that quickly resolve themselves.

Are you going to say that Prime 2 was not clearly influenced by Halo's success? I'd call it debatable but the trooper camera sequence near the start basically seals that that entire portion is there for a reason. It was my very first impression of the game back when it came out that it was hilariously blatant.

Yes, I am sure the devs decided to take what quickly became a famous cutscene and sequence from a hugely popular game that kept getting compared to the first Prime for some bizarre reason and make their own version of it for shits and giggles when Prime 1 had nothing of the sort.

I have. MP2 threads are kinda uncommon and I know there's other autists that think it looks like fucking grape jelly too.
But to talk more about the game proper, I love the design of the dark and light suits, as well as that water booster pack thing.

I can remember first being upset that the dark suit only slows energy drain but honestly I appreciate they hold off total hazard immunity til late game. Hazard zones in the other Metroid games always go from hard road blocks to completely negligible. It takes balls to keep the darkness a hazard up until the very end.

I also enjoy the beam ammo management system more than I thought I would. It helps keep the power beam relevant throughout the game, and the simple system of killing shit with one ammo type giving ammo for the other feels intuitive.
It's also nice that even if you're out of ammo, you can use a charge shot to fire a normal attack to open doors or kill shit that can only be damaged with that particular beam.

Metroid Prime 2 is pretty good.
