It's time for the announced but unreleased games. Now current and covering all three systems.

Final Fantasy V - Square(SNES)
Not really announced, but they mentioned it in Japan watch. I'll take it since there's nothing else these two issues that didn't get released. Didn't get brought over to the US until the PSX got 5 and 6 as the Final Fantasy Anthology collection, which had terrible load times. The RPGe translation was released back in 1998(one year before the PSX version was released here), and is considered one of the first JP console RPG fan translations to be done. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/353/

Yeah, it's one of a rare few "puzzles" in the game that require thinking about the dungeons as a whole unit instead of a series of separate rooms. Getting the Moon Pearl and revealing Blind were the others, but Ice Palace gets tricky for people who can't view it all in their cohesively.

I don't know what was accomplished in this story. There was talk about Link possibly becoming a monster but then... he didn't. Roam is just gone. The fairy seems to have fallen in love with Link or something, but nothing came of it. Zelda never had any personality. Link didn't even consider trying to wish his dead family back to life, or take the fairy to Hyrule, or otherwise do anything interesting. Is this the best story the great, award-winning Japanese artist can write?

Oh well, it's a better comic than Nester's Adventures.

It made 24 million on a 50 million budget. It was originally expected to be a Christmas hit with families, but the crude humor and sexual references made a PG-13 rating happen and the film wasn't mature enough to appeal to adult audiences. Literally killed by it's rating. Had they cut the inappropriate stuff out, Toys might have done better since kids were already familiar with Robin Williams thanks to Aladdin.

176 pages (or whatever it was) is more than enough room to set up and resolve at least one interesting conflict. Nobody expects perfection out of any portion of a Nintendo Power magazine but a special-event story feature taking up that many pages ought to show more than just a bunch of empty action scenes. The Mario comic managed to be fairly entertaining under what appear to be the same conditions. Yeah the Zelda formula does impose some troublesome constraints, and the more lighthearted Mario setting is probably easier to write for - but it seems like these authors were allowed to change the story quite a lot? I mean the game didn't force that dude to invent Roam and Epheremelda and then hardly do anything with them.

It seems like he was aiming for something cool, especially with that downbeat ending. Maybe my clumsy gaijin senses missed something and the try-not-to-become-a-beast stuff with Link and Roam was resolved in some subtle background way. I think it just wasn't a very good comic though. Maybe the author is really good in his other work, I don't know.

To be quite honest, I think Ishinomori was told to just give the broad-strokes of LttP and the "feel" of a fantasy journey. Hell, even with his own series, the manga were pretty different because they were just promos for the real thing. Kamen Rider 1 straight-up DIES at the end of Volume 2 of a three volume series.
