This. I too have a crippling fear of change and of examining the objective value of what I remember from my childhood

A good example of a game remake are the Steam Castlevania and Mega Man collections. Just the game, with some quality of life changes, and that's it. No need to change anything else

It's a complex case-by-case thing, but in general you have a bigger chance of fucking up by updating gameplay than by updating visuals. Though you will always get flak from the SOUL police regardless of how well you do.

A simple clear example for me it's OoT3D vs MM3D. Without going into visuals, I consider Ocarina a fantastic remake because the broadest gameplay changes are objective improvements to the inventory interface, and the added handholding can be completely and easily ignored if you decide so. Plus, there's great ideas such as adding gyroscope-based POV controls (which makes horse archery and Poe hunting super fun), and mirroring the ENTIRE game world for the Master Quest, which makes for a curiously fresh experience.

I personally think Majora's Mask remake was a hack job because the developers overstepped and "fixed" fundamental elements of how the original game worked and how it was designed as an experience. They might have thought they were improving usability and entry-level friendliness, but the changes are drastic and often go against the original's design philosophy to an extent that makes some of the core aspects (i.e. the time loop central idea) almost pointless.

Compared to the based Anniversary and X collection the Mega Man one is utter shit. Split in two with no extra spin-off games.

I meant Mega Man collections as in all of them.
They're all alright, and good representations of the games, while still being easy to access for all the zoom zooms who never had a chance to play them in the first place

>good
When it's different enough (REmakes, Zero Mission, Bionic Commando). Even if it's bad - it's a different game, I don't care about "muh younglings will have a wrong impression about the game based on the remake".
>bad
When it's pretty much only visuals, (Crash, Spyro, SotC, DeS, GTA Trilogy) because it positions itself as "same game, BUT BETTER" and it never is.
Medievil remake might be an exception to that because it does look pretty good and the original is way more about atmosphere and visuals rather than gameplay, but I've never played it, so I can't comment. How is it anyway?

I agree, OoT3D is a great remake, I just wish it was on something that isn't the fucking 3DS. Even the Wii U would have been a better choice.

Medievil? Fun atmophere and plot but hampered by bad cameras and controls even by the era standards. I haven't played the remake but would love the same game but with way better cameras and controls.

I'm asking about the remake.
I think I'm in the minority of people who didn't have any major issues with the controls or the camera, but I can see how it can be a problem, especially jumping, camera was only a bother in the town part to me.
As for the remake, only change that I've seen was the woman's narrations of the lore which I can live with, but I have not looked into the game at all.
Oh and the Glass Demon looks better in the original.

What the fuck are you talking about? Do you even know what a remake is? What quality of life changes? They are just collections of emulated ROMs

I don't mind enhanced port sort of stuff, or how that SotC remake ended up. It's so similar visually that it doesn't mess with me. At the end of the day, the originals are always there, but it feels bad to see the aesthetic go modern, rather than just see a cleaner ver of the older style.

This is the only remake I didn't find myself nitpicking the entire time I played it. I absolutely loved the experience, and you could tell the people they got back made a difference.

>>8271340
I could do with the remake being a little less cartoony, but the original art and concepts were arguably more cartoony than the end result so I think it works.
