I like forests, thick dark forests or the mystical forests where you never know what awaits you.
Unfortunately there aren't that many in retro games, probably due to hardware limitations etc.

I really really like flooded areas where you can't go in the water. I love the atmosphere of being in a sunken city and climing on tops of roofs and shit with the water just a few feet below you.
It's hard to describe because I've never actually seen it executed "perfectly" in my eyes. Whenever I make something though, like a custom map, I'm sure to add a section like it

I love really lived in industrial style places. The marshalling yard in Resi 2 is my favourite location in any game ever and I can't actually describe why.

I enjoy exploring abandoned/forgotten/derelict places in games. I don't know if it's considered retro but the Korriban level from Jedi Academy is one of my favorites.

I love museums or places that have that kind of Neoclassical/Hollywood Greek and Roman look. Cathedrals also qualify in having that "ancient but well maintained" look.
