If a game's stat system is simple you should be able to tell at a glance (50 def armor>40 def armor)

If the game's stat system is complex the player must judge what the better armor is (50 def vs 20 def and 30 fire resist)

OP's point is that the shop screen doesnt illustrate the comparison. it either doesnt directly show you the values of the item for sale, doesnt show you an up or down arrow in general when hovering or considering purchase, or doesnt let you do any sort of comparing or illustrate the numbers of what you have equipped.

for example, mario rpg.

FFVI's shops do tell you if what you're going to buy is "better" than what you have on, and you can use the Optimize option in the Equipment menu to auto-equip the "best" gear.

Well, turns out that shit's misleading as fuck, because what the game judges to be "better" prioritizes the gear's Battle Power (for weapons) and Defense (for shields/helms/armor) values, secondarily considers Magic Defense, stat boosts, and evade/Mblock values, and IIRC doesn't consider elemental defenses at all. The last bit is especially bad because of a glitch where Mblock is the only value used to calculate both magic and physical evasion, so if you max it out, you're almost invincible.

So yeah, for years I was just pressing Optimize and thus tricking out Battle Power and Defense, when by late game, you want to optimize Mblock, and equip Magic-boosting weapons on your mages. Gau and Mog can max their Defense and pair it with high Magic Defense, though, so they're an exception.
