I haven't looked but my guess is that they changed the concentration camp to a pow camp, or changed the prisoners to something gay. Removed Elsa, Shewolf of the SS and replaced her with something gay. Took the posters out and replaced them with something gay. And put a pride flag up at HQ, for good measure.

None of that.

From Tormentor's comment

- The "concentration camp" term is changed to a "prison camp" (only the term, not the map itself)
- All references to jewish prisoners in the former camp have been removed
- The historical correct but anti-semitic content in the World Exhibition in Paris has completely been replaced
- Every anti-semitic Nazi advertisement posters and drawings have been replaced
- The terms "holocaust" and "Final Solution" have been replaced

Nothing that will affect the gameplay but the fact some shmucks complained about it and decided to kneel, just sucks

Oh yeah that one too

I constantly see complains that WW2 games are not historically accurate enough. BOA is not accurate given the hi tech and zombies but at least tried to replicate the setting of the time period. Which they do pretty damn well.

But then all the sudden is not a good thing anymore.
Those complains were some of the most idiotic things I've read in a while and lead to Torm getting banned after 2 decades on the website

>> No.8260301

Imagine if a game where Nazis are used as the villains showed actual villainous things they did. DW is retarded as fuck.

>> No.8260303

i think the worst torm has done is making a joke about someone trans, if that was true
but i wonder what works of fiction do people consume nowadays that makes it forbidden from making obvious bad guys even more evil
not to say that wolfendoom blade of agony is "high art" for a well known bloated mod full of misdirections but where's that power fantasy in punching nazis if they can't do the things they're good at?
remember that bioshock infinite review saying "what's the point of making bad guys racist, if they can't even say the n word?"
unless it's only ok if you add something to "contrast" it, no matter how out of place it is, like an ally female soldier designed like an "epic brown skinned tomboy with pink hair" so suddenly the mod is also woke and the good kind of horny
they unironically fell for that "doom promotes satanism despite being about killing demons" rhetoric spewed by rightwing boomers

>> No.8260308

Tons more people started idolizing that I think, as well as all of 2016 happening.

>i think the worst torm has done is making a joke about someone trans, if that was true

pretty sad that the only thing people know about the drama is this when torm didn't even know about randi's transition, and the entire character is just some monkey island reference

>> No.8260364

Even then none of this should have any impact on the making of a mod. Let the antagonist be a villain for fuck sake,it's like these days the only way to make a villain is making a twist villain or a clumsy idiot.
Blade of Agony is the most ambitious mod in Doom history and they had to cripple it that way.

>> No.8260378

Linguica got scared shitless when Doom was brought into Columbine coverage and DW has since upheld this unspoken rule to ban and reject anything that could create a serious controversy. There's nothing more to it, I think. ZDoom forums are another matter.

So the last thread has reminded me that Arthurian Legends have been out of a while and I somehow missed it. So I picked it up with a five finger discount.
What the fuck is this engine even.
Can't rebind controls from game, have to quit, rebind it in pre-launch window. Same for resolution.
Need to install some shady redist that needs my PC rebooted or else it just wont work.
Jank movement physics. Tries to emulater Build, but feels even jankier than Witchaven somehow.

Performance is absolute trash. I have i7 with 1080 ti. It plays Cyberpunk 2077 on high at 55-70. It plays all modern games at 60+.
This turd give me 45-50 fps on average, 35-40 in a fight.

Cherry on top: horrendous view distance, worse than on most PS1 games. Thats on maximum setting.I am not kidding. Bumping the fog distance in config does nothing - it just resets back.

There was always stuff pulling to both sides, the huge guts meme one won.

I don't care in the end really.

But I love the failed horror attempt at doom, the times was never right. I think in my mind my perfect doom is 2.5, the aesthetic of doom64, and elements of HD to really amke you think you are a normal human fighting against hell itself and never giving up.

I would say even sacrificing yourself to slay the demons.

The objective was simple and was making him one of the strongest characters in videogame history.
Which will only lead on making comparisons to other powerful beings.
And power scaling fans are some of the worst,it's just pandering.

In fact the lore itself is pandering. See Doom 3 and 2016,both have plenty of info and lore but you're free to not care about by simply skipping it,the story is still easy to follow.
In fact classic Doom's manual had a simple premise and gave you everything you needed. Same for some intermission texts.

You know, I never thought of it that way. I feel like Doomslayer tries way too fucking hard to be a badass character. It's always these stupidly over-the-top kills and cinematic bullshit with him. Contrast that with pic related. Doomguy here is just a man fighting back desperately against the demonic hordes. He's wounded, his armour's scratched up and he doesn't know about that demon reaching out for him from behind. It conveys this sense of desperation that's never seen in Doom 2016 or Doom Eternal, which I think matches the original atmosphere of Doom way better.

>> No.8260678

Proves that just because something is successful doesn't mean that you will get the same results if you try to replicate it.

That happened with a lot of mapsets trying to replicate other games style but didn't work for Doom

It's more of a process of changing your target audience.
Remember how early Resident Evil games were campy but maintain their horror atmosphere? With RE 4 and 5 that was almost gone because action games were getting more popular.

Just throwing this idea back out in case anyone is still interested since the Halloween project is almost done. This would be a small project where everyone creates a different part of the same map "patchwork" style. You would claim a tile, draw your design for it, then map it out to be combined into one chaotic mess. Every other tile would be claimed and drawn out first, then a second round of claiming would happen with the remaining tiles to ensure every tile is properly connected. The center tile would contain the end trigger locked behind all three keys. Each key would be in the corners as shown, making the map more open ended. I'm also thinking of splitting up the three main weapons spawns (rl, ssg, plasma) in a similar fashion.
The size of the grid and how big each tile is solely depends on how many people would be willing to partake. More people = larger grid but smaller tiles. Any other ideas for the project are appreciated.

Updated the weapons some.

>the palette rapes the muzzleflashes, so I've tried to mitigate this some by doing some dithering to blend red and orange (it looks ok, I guess)
>tweaked sounds
>made the drum magazine brighter and more standout
>tried to fix the shotgun pickup sprite because the palette also raped that
>fixed credits
>added text strings for clip and clipbox pickup (they're in the LANGUAGE lump but can just be copied, again, this is all just a demonstration of animation frames and sounds)

I'd appreciate any further input.

I think that something I'll do after the project is finished and released, is to make a little optional patch which has the weapon sprites as truecolor .pngs, because the palette really does a number on these sprites. The palette makes the overall environment look nice, but beyond that, MAN.

I believe that this bug is probably on GzDoom's end, not ours, Graf may have broken something while implementing partial support for Extended DeHacked (which is apparently a bitch to implement). What's the /vr/ perspective on Doom 2016 and Eternal?
2016 was a good step but pales in comparison to eternal IMO, the combat in eternal is very doom-y and is borderline ascendant for the state of FPS games

>> No.8262186

2016 was good
eternal went too meta with combat, the story is garbage, and "resource management" is outright axed. "oh no, I have to press 1 button on conveniently respawning trash mob once every 20 seconds, how do I manage that, peak resource management I swear guize"

>the combat in eternal is very doom-y
I don't agree. Eternal plays extremely differently to Doom I and II.
>Huge emphasis on using a variety of different abilities and managing cooldowns
>Glory kill mechanic for a number of different reasons
>>Abusing invulnerability frames and regaining all your health on gibbing an imp
>>Glory killing invalidates just shooting something and killing it outright
>>If an enemy recovers from being staggered, you have to sink even more ammo into them to stagger them again
>Chainsaw provides theoretically infinite ammo, meaning there is very little resource management (apart from cooldowns)
>The enemy roster isn't as good as Doom II's
>Suffers from modern level design, in that it focuses more on making believable locations, rather than using the levels to create gameplay
>Because enemies can theoretically chase you anywhere in the arena, it invalidates clever enemy placement to design combat encounters
>The overall tone of the game is completely different from Doom I and II, in that you're some legendary figure and there's a fuck ton of background story, as opposed to just being a guy who's good with a gun
If I had to think of a game that was like Doom Eternal, I would say the closest thing was Guild Wars 2, just with more shooting and movement abilities. That game also puts nearly all its emphasis on managing cooldowns, rather than resources. I also played Eternal first and I can say Doom I and II are better games, especially when you take into account user content.

Love how snappy die Luger ist, the hammer/firing animation on the lever shotty is lovely, don't have any complaints about the subgun.

Issues I noticed were how you really don't see the lever being operated. If you know what it's supposed to be, it's ok, but otherwise it's not that easy to identify. Also, the muzzle flash is really tiny and short compared to the other guns. The pickup sprite has this weird hump on the back of the grip, I think this can also be smoothed out easily.
The SSG's reloading animation is pretty long, but with the same speed as the original's it looks like sped up, I found it a bit awkward.
Also, the ammo icon for the subgun is the same as the Luger's.
The shotguns sound like cannons, which is a little bit too much for my tastes.

I got an error message when trying to load the wad in GZD 4.4.2, if you put

at the same time, i can see someone fuck this up
when a western indie game does sexy designs, they can still feel bland and sometimes do it because "we're not like those sjw'" when japanese games do it so often, it becomes too traditional, therefore they put more effort into these designs
specially in fighting games
at least skullgirls and shantae have memorable designs for western games
but like, write a character before adding a sexy design that also has more elements to talk about
think of a gimmick
why some female indie fps characters suffer isn't because they're not sexy but because ion fury shelly and the ones in selaco and supplice seem to have the same "source of influence", making the orc futa look more novel in comparison
likewise, i wish term's demonsteele and that one robot girl mod were extended as standalone games
plus a lot of 90/80's throwback media either feels ironic or points at specific trends and concepts
specially the blue and purple/sunset/vhs/grid/vaporware/kung fury aesthetic
there's like so many good 80's movies that not song makes me thing that was the main 80's look
i feel like one way to truly embrace older aesthetics is to truly contrast current ones like making "goofy looking monsters" to contrast overdetailed moba designs

>Issues I noticed were how you really don't see the lever being operated
I know, I figure it's probably barely visible in some screen sizes, but it's what I could come up with. The sprites for the shotgun were very much "come up with things as I went"

I wanted it to be different from the rest of them.

>The pickup sprite has this weird hump on the back of the grip, I think this can also be smoothed out easily.
That's the remains of the stock, not an unusual style for cut down lever-action guns, it would actually support the bottom of your palm, making it a slightly more comfortable gun to shoot.

>The SSG's reloading animation is pretty long, but with the same speed as the original's it looks like sped up, I found it a bit awkward.
It is what it is. Blame 2020 me.

>Also, the ammo icon for the subgun is the same as the Luger's.
That's on GzDoom's side, I don't think you'll get that in DSDA or anything once it's implemented.

>The shotguns sound like cannons, which is a little bit too much for my tastes.
Just going by Bobby Prince's ethos, "for a pistol, you sample a shotgun, for a shotgun, you sample a cannon"

>I got an error message when trying to load the wad in GZD 4.4.2, if you put
Yes, that's a goof on my part.

Oh, I must have left that in. I kind of just copied over code from 2048Guns. Adding a 0 duration frame to the raise and lower states makes weapons raise and lower faster, this should work even in DeHacked.

Anyway, that's easily ignored when porting it over.

not hard at all. With ranged enemies - snipe them with axes/crossbows/spells. If can't, use shield to get up close, use club.

I fucking know what's wrong with this engine and its performance.
It's fucking grid-tile based, but the grid is 3D. Kinda like System Shock 1, or rather tombrader, jus the grid is a bit more dense.
Everything except items are on a grid.
And each piece of a grid is always rendering as a 12-polygon cube at all times, even if they are within a wall.
There are some bugs that allow clipping your head through for a few moments, and then you notice the structure of stuff, in a way very similar to Minecraft, yet somehow worse coded.
This could have literally been made a minecraft mod and it would've run better.

Most filters are invariably ugly as fuck and makes the assets look shit. This isn't a meme, this is a common opinion, and you're gonna have to just cope with the fact that people think it's hideous.

>> No.8263612

filtering inadvertedly ruins the picture.
When image is low res, the details are distinct and sharp
Filtering does not add any detail, but it smears the existing ones blurring them together
HD texture packs are also terrible, but for a different reason (usually excessive amount of overdetailing that ruins the image contrast, completely ruining the colors of the scene when viewed from distance)

>> No.8263632

Tomb Raider is a bit different, instead of 3D tiles with 6 sides, it places surfaces on a grid, and thus it does not have any extra polygons it has to render.
This was done for optimisation - since every surface is on a strict grid, their rendering and collisions become much easier to calculate.
AL however is the opposite of "optimised"

>> No.8263638

HD packs, for any game really, not just Doom, could be decent/good in theory, but usually it fails because:
>the geometry the textures get applied to aren't comparably high definition, so the resulting textures look flatter (as in making E1M1 look LESS realistic because the higher definition textures calls attention to just how flat the floor, wall, and switch surfaces are)
>the assets aren't consistent, possibly because of different artists or lack of skill and consistency from the one artist
>cheap shortcuts are taken like using some pre-existing model, using neural upscaling and animation interpolation, etc
>it's only partial (like say, only being done to the wall and floor textures, but not the sprites, so it looks very jarring)
>it has some kind of material sheen shader included that makes every single surface look like it's it coated in glossy plastic and then slathered in a thin layer of sexlube

>> No.8263675

I meant the monsters in Tomb Raider rather than its level geometry. If you go to the second stage and get all the wolves in one area it lags to shit. The later games don't suffer such an issue.

>> No.8263703

It's a matter of fidelity consistency.
Geometry, terxtures, models and animations must be of compareable fidelity to look good together.
Game devs of the time tried to maintain balance between overall image fidelity and performance, thus all components that go into game visuals must've been on about the same level.
When certain thing is a lot higher fidelity than other, it sticks out like a sore thumb, like when high res textures are stretched over flat walls, or a blocky model.
For it to look good, HD pack must touch on all things textures, level geometry, models, and animations.
And GZDoom 3D models may never look good without altering monster code severely, both in the actor, and within engine.

Retro is a way of doing games, it can't be measured by time. The concept that

Post-2000 games are not retro and will never be retro. They have a completely

different mentality than the arcade era of the 90's\80's.

It's not arbitrary. That's the decade where the arcade lost the race against

consoles. There's a clear shift in the '00: the focus got entirely on

You can kill him, he's just as tough as when he was the final boss of Ashes 1. There's no reward other than being able to pass through that area without him shooting at you, I think.
>Where does the Guard Captain disappear to?
I didn't even notice he'd vanished. He comes back to apologise after you do a few sidequests.
>After leaving the subway, can you go back later?
No, you go through a few transit maps IIRC it's Leaving Michonne, Escape From Atlanta, The Rink, Badlands South, The Array and then enter the second hub.

>Can you access the lost station?
No, it's just there as a red herring for the secret maps.
>Is there a route from Undercity to The Gap without going through the Flooded District?
I wasn't able to find one, The Gap's only exit is to the Flooded District and Secret Level 1, but that's not particularly well hidden and can be found just by paying attention to the map and seeing a big area open up to explore.

Quake 2, Quake 4 and Doom 3 could have shared the same title and nobody would be able to spot the difference. The original Quake never really got a sequel.

You could just open it in Anvil Studio and adjust the volume with that. That said, MIDI is ultimately a digital piano reel, people can adjust the volume themselves in options.

I’ve only tried the first quarter of it, but Q4 felt a lot more “dark and shiny” like Doom 3 over Q2’s “brown to orange” aesthetic. I wonder if they do that “Strogg chapel” end level any justice.

Finally found all eight secrets on The Rink level.
If you're struggling, I can point out all the ones I remember.
Hardest one for me was the locked bathroom in the lobby. You get there by jumping down from a vent in the walkway above.
There's also secrets in the truck outside (watch out for traps), the room that requires a bronze security key (key is nearby inside a room covered by a false window), there's two secrets in rooms full of pipes you're supposed to jump around, there's nothing in or around the fighting area itself AFAIR but you can get to the bleachers from the elevator, there's a secret in the shopping area on top of a structure, get there by jumping on to a vent from a window, uhh that's all I remember.

Epic 2 sucks. Go through a door, hitscanners to your sides. Another door, hitscanners to your sides. 25 maps of this annoying shit, and then it turns into a switch hunt (with hitscanners to your sides).

there's a paid SP filter thingy called Pixel8r. it can kinda do the job, but in the end I made my own version to fix filtering issues. I can post it but not right now. ping me again if I don't post it within a week.
aside from that, I've used the built-in baked lighting filter in SP, the rest isn't different from regular use. I've yet to try Armor Paint for the task.

I did Knee Deep in the Dead this style, and holy hell it was tough but fun. It actually felt like the box art with just hoards of enemies descending on you. But hitscanners get a bit too dangerous, but it boosted a lot of enemies to be actual threats again. Surprisingly Zombiemen actually were dangerous for once.

I read a while ago that Edward was working on a zdoom no game browser called zdoom online. Essentially a multi user front end. You'd join a lobby, someone would host, number of players would be set to number of people in the lobby... Something like that.
But I guess he never finished it?

Doom modifier:
>shotguns will now knock back enemies killed by them
>shells from ammo boxes cut in half
>lightning gun with plasma ammo now functions as a BFG at the cost of 20 plasma (new audio files in sounds/plasma)

Updated the FGD with stuff that has been in progs but experimental or overlooked:
>misc_model visibility can be toggled and has a spawnflags to start as invisible (check your misc_models if you used any... I don't *think* I broke anything but let's make sure)
>trigger_hurt can now be toggled on and off and has a spawnflag that makes it only do damage in the instant it is triggered
>added trigger_detarget which removes targets and/or target names from monsters who touch it (depending on spawnflag)
>added trap_tesla_coil, trap_gods_wrath, and trap_gravity_well from Scourge of Armagon (thought these were included in PD2 but apparently not)
>added item_nsigil (secret level runes, also updated models - pic related)
>specific_enemy string for monsters - makes them attack an entity with a matching targetname (see: Shub's Wager)
>charmed float (0 or 1) for monsters - makes them friendly and follow a player (like Horn of Conjuring)
>not_counted float (0 or 1) for monsters - makes them not count towards a monster count (zombie audience and competing monsters in Shub's Wager)

>railgun will now always gib any enemy it kills
>added some missing out of ammo messages
>several weapons should now properly attempt to switch ammo types before switching weapon when you run out of ammo
>new button to check how many N-Runes have been collected (impulse 102, default N key with updated quake.rc)
>updated Shub's Wager with some slight balancing changes and an adjustment for misc_model changes (the shit I was doing before was retarded)

I *think* I've remembered everything this time. Please yell if anything is broken.

Ashesbros, I'm way ahead of this part now. But is there really no other option here but to rocket jump with the flamethrower thing? I thought I read one of the devs say that's not required anywhere in the game, or maybe that's only for progressing the storyline, not secrets?

>> No.8268567

As for release, I believe two anons are working on additional maps. After we get the first of those we will (assuming the second isn't more than a few days behind) vote on the secret level and distribute the runes to unlock it. If you DO NOT want to be in the running for the secret level, you can go ahead and claim a rune (marked 1-6 in the above post). You can place it in your map in front of a locked door or other progress blocker as you see fit. They should trigger things like any other pickup. The particular rune is set by the 'style' key.

Also, I did forget something:
>fixed item_backpack not properly giving rockets or the grapple hook

I'm really sorry for the delay, I would prefer not going into details but finally, the fucking beta is here. it's my first time using UMAPINFO so I need playtesters to point out any bugs or to suggest some changes.

>Notorious issues from this Beta

-Old version of the custom guns
-Not tested in GZdoom
-Incomplete graphics and probably older versions of the maps.
(Please, REPOST your last map update here or in the Anchor again)
-Map15 secret exit not tested yet.
