Question: Do fighting game characters have their own stages in newer games? I remember the older ones did it all the time, and it added such a layer of atmosphere, going to a particular character's stage, and facing them on their own turf, listening to "their" music.

It never made sense to me that a game called Street Fighter had more private property than street stages

I feel, with my completely uneducated opinion, that older games in general would feature levels to bolster the character designs. It's easier to want to play as Sumo Santa in Clayfighters after you've seen his Santa House and looked at a couple of his elves.

yeah, lets ignore that only 6 characters are entirely viable in competitive play. And worst, no one watches tournaments of this acclaimed classic because it pretty much turns into top 8 being nothing but Chuns, Yuns, or Kens.

This is why the only hype "tournament" is the Co-op cup which is 3-man team tourney with single elimination and no prize money.

Yes, clearly the last good fighting game.

One fighting game that did this particularly well was Art of Fighting 1 on the SNES

the soundtrack is phenomenal despite the game being ball-busting hard and the CPU was a cheating sack of shit.

But the OST is insanely underrated and is far superior to the Arcade version.

And yet people would frown upon them because they did absurd damage.

He's an idiot but I think you misunderstood his comment, he only like co-op cup because it's purely a tourney done out of passion. For some reason that guy is assblasted about the fact that developers actually added depth to games so that even 25 years later so many of them have a legacy. He's in the darkstalkers thread too, guess he can't deal with playing other people.

its the only way to make the game watchable

its not a burn on the tournament, but the game itself not being as entertaining to watch at its highest level of competitiveness. No one gives a fuck about a double elim bo5 tourney to see who is the best, because its a fuckin snore of a fuckin game.

so you settle for single-elim bo1 pokemon style team tourney, and hope to see some upsets, blow ups, and underdogs winnings. Cuz otherwise, u get nothing but Chun mirrors fishing for low short into super.

But yeah, lets just go with me having no soul, since that makes more sense.

Since no one answered OPs question, it depends. There could be less stages than characters, so you could encounter 2 or more in the same stage, making it so that it's not their stage anymore, but certain characters will always appear in a particular stage. As for music, it's usually associated to the stage and not the character. Of course mini boss and boss fights are the exception. They always have their own stage and music.
>>8259253
Tekken 3 and Tag have them. Just search on youtube. Can't remember if 1 and 2 have music. All others have the song associated to the area they appear in. Like, in 4 you fight Hwoarang in the parking lot, so the theme for that stage plays, which makes it "his theme". All characters have an ending song associated to them.

>> No.8259310

>>8259291
It's the same deal in Tekken 2. I think they may have reused a few songs from Tekken, but each character has their own stage and by extension their own song. i can't remember if every ending cinematic has a unique song but at least some of them are different

AoF is an underrated game that certainly has its problems, but also brought many innovations to the genre at the time, such as a story mode with cutscenes, battle damage visible on the characters during the fight, bonus stages that actually make your character stronger, power charging and functional taunts.
Don't know why you specified the SNES version though, it's a good port but I don't think it has anything the Neo Geo version doesn't have.

Some older games are less punishing than others. SF3 is a lot of fun even when youre losing. The game is so fluid and intuitive. Knocking down allows even the newest players to play wakeup mindgames that they can follow up with easy combos if they win. Feels good. Once I got good with akuma and makoto I started getting into some kind of flow where I just do things without even thinking. Anti air some jump and juggling the opponent feels so good.

The most punishing game Ive ever played was KOF98. Shit starts happening and I have no idea what to do. Also ST vs zangief, the fuckhuge range on that guy

sweep into low/overhead/throw mix-up is zero effort. button into special move combos take a few minutes to learn, total in your entire life. juggling after that can be a bit more specific but not so bad that you can't learn it while fighting another person.
