The mega drive three button controller for the nintendo price is a fucking joke.
I have an original japanese / Small European 6 button Mega Drive gamepad that has a 8bitdo PCB inside it. More buttons, compatible with switch and three other modes, cost third of that.
FC30 or NES30 - 20 to 30 bucks, negatives or positives depending on user is more buttons. Also Switch plus three other platforms compatible.
And 8bitdo hasn't had like million SNES pads already.

Whole fucking nintendo online retro shilling is disgustingly Jewish and I am glad I rather have banned switch that has like 400 NES/Famicom games 200 Genesis games 15 N64 games and 100 SNES games while nintendo tries to shill out money from others for far less than that.

But I cannot play Turtles in time online sucks to be me I have to take my switch over to someone's place to do that what a bummer.

OK, so what should people do instead of replacing the stick which is bound to wear out? The only other options are to try your luck purchasing another used controller which could easily be at least as worn out, or buying a third-party controller. (which isn't a bad idea if you get a new one like Brawler64 from Retro Fighters, which is good quality and similar to a Gamecube controller but with a far better D-Pad and proper C-Buttons.)

No one's paying $400+ for a new untouched official N64 controller. It makes perfect sense to replace the analog sticks and fuming with hot gas at people who do so by blaming them for the fact that the replacement analog sticks aren't as good as they could be makes zero sense and makes you sound asocial.

They didn't really know how people were going to want to interface with analog controls so they assumed that D-Pad based input and Analog Stick based inputs would be completely mutually exclusive, so it's designed to only be held by two of the three prongs with the idea that you just won't have any use for the unused prong.
Of course once people were more used to analog sticks it became apparent that you'd want to be able to easily access both the stick and the d-pad so you can use the d-pad as a secondary set of inputs and click down the stick for yet more input options.

How's the lag on these? I've never trusted retrobit's products but it's been a while.
8bitdo's genesis receivers have been almost completely unnoticeable for me (And that might even just be my personal bias), and I'm using a CRT.

From where? Only Kitsch-bent sells replacement bowls and sticks as far as I know and they're awful. Steelsticks aren't a very affordable option and ProStick64 is currently vaporware.

>>8272494
>kitsch-bent is fine
No they aren't. Kitsch-bent parts are equal to an OEM stick in 5/10 condition. 6.5/10 if you work your ass off to fix them.

seconding this
as soon as I tried the parts from that place I knew it was hopeless and immediately ordered two new-old-stock controllers.
They'll never be able to make them properly again. I bet this new official one will suck too.

The stick/gears look to be the same as the original, they don't look to be lubricated though, so I guess everyone should open it to lubricate.

>> No.8275313

>>8275305
I took a better look at the original tweet. Maybe you don't even need to change the gears if you want to play with it in a original N64 controller, the plug seems to be same, all you need to do is to swap the the whole stick box.

>they don't look to be lubricated though,
it's tough to say from that photo. Original N64 sticks didn't have the bowl lubricated, but the slots on top of the bowl the gear assemblies sit on were, in fact, lubricated. From the look of that photo, those areas look shinier than the rest of the plastic, so I'm assuming at least those are lubricated.

>>8275316
Yeah, I noticed that too, but it's mostly the stick base, the gears and the bowl that wears down. It's something to keep a look. Also, the gears are slightly different from a closer look. I hope that the whole sticker box is as good as the original, so we won't need to go hunting for good replacement parts.

From what I'm seeing I don't assume that most of these parts are going to be easy drop in replacements, unfortunately.

I can't speak for the wireless one or the input lag but the wired one is OK for the price. The stick is more sensitive and the gate is different, but if you just want some Mario Party or Mario Kart beaters it's hard to go wrong with the Tribute64. It compares favorably to the Hori mini pads in sensitivity, the deadzones seem to be about the same as well. The feel of the buttons and plastic are overall cheaper though. Really not sure I'd recommend the more expensive wireless version.

You are correct, I just checked more pictures on that tweet. The gears seems to be close, but they have small studs that connects into the potentiometers, so they are different, maybe we could use them, but we'd need to adapt the studs, maybe removing them.

Also, we can not swap the stick box, they have different plugs apparently, the original has 6 wires, this one has 4. Maybe with an adapter? At this point it's best to keep buying from Kitsch-Bent. I mean, we are not paying $50 for some gears. The N64 Gears (https://www.n64gears.com) + Kitsch Bent stick + bowl is considered to be a good combination.

It's not gonna use a optic sensor if that's what you are hoping for. That's outdated tech prone to failure without any means of auto-calibration(something the switch relies on) and a very low precision rate(literally dependent on number of notches on a plastic wheel that gets grinded down with every move)

the optical sensor is the one part of the N64 controller that DOESN'T break, what are you talking about? The loss of precision common in N64 controllers is the result of the channel in the gear pieces (the parts that are identical in the NSO controller) wearing down from use. The only difference between an N64 controller and an NSO controller is that the gears are turning a pot instead of the sensor wheel.

Any chance this will be Wii or Wii U compatible in the near or far future?

then why were they never replicated properly?
I always thought the rare as fuck optical shit was breaking from use, not the other stuff.
remodeling the gears/plastic-parts for replication should be easier these days.

nta, but I think it's because the tolerance of the mold, I think you needed a LEGO tier mold, with tolerances of 10nm to reproduce it perfectly. I believe that N64 Gears achieved that, but one of the gears that was sent to create the mold was probably used, because one of the gears has a mark, so they are not perfect. There's a site reviewing the gears, I think it's wtfparts.info, read it and you'll understand the whole problem better.

because plastic injection molding is expensive, especially when you have to reserve engineer a mold for the part you're trying to make. Not the kind of thing one guy in his garage can do.
