Is Wario World a good game to pick up?

>> No.8253585

you see the nintendo logo and character and think to yourself "It must be good!" and then play it for yourself and it just never gets good. It's worse and worse. It's misery.

Worse than your typical Wario game.

We haven't had a proper Wario game since Shake It. Warioware notwithstanding.

I love Wario and I didn't think it was very good back in the day. Unlike the Land games or WarioWare, I feel like it doesn't express what I love about that character.

>> No.8253615

It’s repetitive, short and easy but there’s a lot of soul and charm to it. You are better off sticking to the Wario Land games though

As cool as it was to have a 3D Wario game back in the day, you unfortunately saw everything the game had to offer by the end of the first world. It's repetitive in just about every way imaginable; small moveset with zero upgrades, reskinned enemies, "Push button to activate hidden treasure" multiple times in every level.
We did get some iconic music from it though: https://youtu.be/e7kwoHOciDM

Gimme the music of Wario Land, the abilities of Super Mario Land 3 and the gameplay of Odyssey and you'd have the perfect Wario game comeback.

>> No.8253738

It doesn't feel like the typical Wario or Treasure game. It was worth picking up in 2003 when I got it but last I checked on ebay it's close to $100. I'd just use dolphin if I were you. It's not as good as the wario land games but I still enjoyed it

I remember being so excited when this game was revealed, they even went for the name I wanted for a 3D Wario game.

But then it came out and got an especially tepid reaction and I never played it. From what I've seen in videos though the game looks pretty bad.

I think you meant "Gimme the music of Wario World." Super Mario Land 3 IS Wario Land (1)

So supposing you were referring to Wario Land, your reply reads redundant.

It's a quick game to run through. The mini courses have comfy and very creative platform challenges involving blocks of all shapes and moving patterns. Kind-of like a comfy version of Super Mario Sunshine's void levels. Despite people writing about how short it is, it would be even better if it was shorter by snipping out those mandatory timed fight arenas in levels. Granted, you can google a glitch tech ability to bypass them.

3/5 game with some mandatory platforming experiences for platformer enthusiasts. The Japanese version has an improved final boss btw.

>But then it came out and got an especially tepid reaction and I never played it. From what I've seen in videos though the game looks pretty bad.

>Creative

it's your typical colethathon trash design with terrible use of screen size and terrible platform controls. If you think mario 3d world controls bad you haven't played wario wor*d yet

>> No.8254172

it's a weird thing. treasure has made some great platformers and some great beat em ups, and this is a mediocre platformer with mediocre beat em up sections
some of the level designs are creative and it's fun to giant swing a motherfucker around and steal his money but it's not going to blow your mind. it's short and repetitive: a bad combo

>> No.8254205

It's a very short game but still manages to feel like it has overstayed its welcome by the time you finish. Its not awful though, and it's dripping with charm and character. Good music too. I'd say it's worth at least a playthrough. It won't take too long either.
Probably don't buy it though, it's fairly expensive I think

the best 3D Wario game imo, would be a combination of Wario World and Super Mario 3D World, a 4 player co-op beat em up/platformer through bizarre worlds where you can select from Wario, Waluigi, Capt. Syrup and a whole bunch of the Ware cast, maybe as a big celebration of Wario having you fight off all of the old major bosses from across his games and fuck, maybe even make a giant, demon possessed version of Mario as the final boss in a call back reverse to Mario Land 2.

Wario World was boring and repetitive as fuck. Some of the bonus world puzzles and bosses were cool, though. Irregardless, it's the worst retro Wario game.

>> No.8254865

>>8253583
It's okay, decent, just that it will probably feel really repetitive because the enemies you fight between levels and worlds are largely, though not entirely, reskins of what you've fought since level 1, getting stronger and stronger as you progress through the game. This isn't helped by the fact that you'll probably fall into using Wario's two wrestling moves, a piledriver and a swinging toss, a lot and you don't really have much else besides a somewhat unwieldly shoulder barge and a ground pound. Really, I guess you could call it a beatem' up with platforming.

That said, the platforming in question starts picking up as soon as the second world. It's been awhile, but I remember the levels actually being pretty diverse in setting and what they throw at you. Also, there's treasures with switches to figure out, and a different boss at the end of literally every level. Bosses can't be fought without getting gems, and gems are found in treasure hatches or springs, where you have to go through varied platforming challenges and puzzles. It's actually pretty neat.

As it may sound, it's got a lot of good that gets held back by I guess a shortage of options and a lot of repetition, so the game kind of just ends up being good and no more than that, if even.

>>8253583
It's decent. Would have been a great weekend rental kind of game, but it's not anything special.
The main problem I have with Wario World is that the game feels confused on whether it wants to be a fully-3D collectathon platformer or a 2.5D brawler, and it ends up lacking in both of these aspects. The exploration is repetitive and while there's a novelty to the combat and seeing wario swing dinosaurs around, it's way too basic for the amount of mandatory fights the game subjects you to. It's easy as fuck too - there's basically no penalty for dying.

Nice trolling about the controls. Anyway, the screen size comment is unusual criticism that doesn't apply here but is interesting nonetheless.
>>8254907
>not anything special
Glue globes, block-use, character control, boss fights, sound effects, etc are plenty special.
>exploration is repetitive
There is no real exploration. It's very fast-paced / immediate. You're not getting Wario Land find the secrets here.
>basic combat
yeah for common enemies that you really aught not focus on destroying. the bosses are fun
>easy
Yeah, there could be more difficulty in platform courses and boss fights. An easy difficulty fix would be to add a lives system, but I find the game's vibe is to be more breezy than hard-fought. I'd imagine getting Game Overed on athletic courses to kicked out to the HUB would cause slight player frustration in trekking back and finding the troublesome mini-course portal.

Stage structure-wise, I agree with what you wrote. Stage though, not courses. The courses are great and a whole game composed of just them would be a dream.

>> No.8254962

>>8253583
It's pretty mediocre. Not bad, but there's nothing special about it. Also the US version's final boss is dragged out way too long with zero variance in how you fight it.

I asked for *games* not a single game, anon. (Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat dabs on Klonoa 2.) Wario World would be extremely disappointing to buy at launch price of $50. I got it for like $20. Good deal. Definitely not a 'hidden gem' but it's important to purchase for 3D platformer enthusiasts because it has cool stuff in it and will be much more benefit for discussion purposes than the overrated first party PS2 games (e.g. Sly, Jak & Daxter) that are better for adventuring elements than platforming.

WArio Land is no longer possible because

1. Shake It bombed and it was an expensive 2d animated project, on a console with a huge install base craving 2D games
2. The Mario Mandate in 2009/2010 ensures Wario Land will never happen again and keep Wario separate in the microgame dungeon forever as WarioWare, and Miyamoto doesnt like him anymore
3. R&D1 no longer exists, and Sakamoto is not qualified to head a new Wario Land. In fact, the only real option right now would be WayForward. LITERALLY your only hope right now is a pozzed remake by them of one of the original 4 games. Would you monkeypaw something like this THAT hard?

No, stick with the psudo-beat em up, mixed with platformer gameplay, though maybe thrown in some Power Stone esque guantlet area sections of stages where you fight enemies trying to overwhelm you and you can grab the environmental elements to use as weapons and shit. Maybe have some kind of mechanic where you need treasure to keep your health filled or something, idk. It just feels short enough and pick-up n play style that it seems like something Sega would have released as some late 90s arcade title or something.
