My laptop is a decade old and I really don't think GZDoom is going to run well on it, the Hedon demo ran like absolute dogshit on it and because lel I know it's never been well optimized. This laptop used to be able to play Metro 2033 back in the day, too.

I ran Skulltag/Zandronum on Windows 98 and Windows 2k machines and they ran fine. If you don't need GZDoom's fancy graphical features pr mods you can run a sourceport on a machine two decades old, really.

John Romero's Level Design Tips

Have people playtest your maps for feedback. Until you get good at mapping, don't ignore playtester advice. "The playtester is always right" should be your mentality.
If they're kind enough to give you a demo, it's not a waste of time, you should watch it. People don't play your maps like you expect, especially when you're new to mapping. You'll see where you need to make adjustments based on their playthrough. Maybe they got lost for a long time, or ran out of ammo because where you placed the ammo was obscure. Maybe they found a way to cheese your fights.
Make three practice maps before submitting to a community project. No idea why noobs would want their shitty first map to drag down the quality of a WAD, especially since playtesters are going to be so bogged down teaching you how to do fundamental shit you should already know how to do, that there's no time to refine the actual gameplay or layout.

You are going to play your own map better than anyone because you know exactly where everything is and what traps are coming. So be more generous with your items than what you yourself need. Playtest your map without secrets and without saves. If you're having trouble beating your own map saveless, it's not gonna be remotely fair to expect anyone else to.

Yamagi has a few options to mess around with it, I still wish it and KMQ2 had as much choice to mess with it as Quakespasm does for Q1.
Very nice, I've got to try this on my next replay of it.
When I swing over to System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, I prefer the filtering on. Might be something tied to the setting and overall style, but I'm still having a hard time figuring out where my preference comes from.

Yamagi is run by people who instead of innovate the damn engine and fix issues, they keep purist and stagnated, it doesn't help either that DFRetro shilled them, and KMQ2 later cant run Oblivion and other stuff due to the lack of source code and incompatibility, but it has the innovative and advanced stuff thanks to Lazarus, which YQ2 despises it when Q2 supports it since 3.14.

SS2 definitely looks better filtered, there was a dev from Thief saying they specifically went with bold lines to make the von braun more stylized.

It shows, SS2 is a beautiful looking game. Super comfy with the higher res textures.
Thief however kinda benefits from no filtering, especially the first one. It really fits the weird dark grunge steampunk setting like a glove.

Its one of the things I hate about dishonored, it tries to hard to look crazy, while Thief looked kinda off but normal until it looked crazy if that makes sense.

A lot of 90's non literay media had some pretty WTF novelisations.
I've had this idea stuck in my head for quite a while, and the main gist of it is kind of a "bootleg Heretic" novel - everything is recogniseably Heretic, but different enough not to get copyright striked (protagonist is still an elf named Corvus, to maintain connection with original)
With items and weapons having familiar function, yet different form - for example "Phoenix Rod" becomes a Bow (because he's an elf after all), enchanted by the Phoenix spirit Corvus meets along his journey, Mystic Urn contains ashes of said phoenix and has regenerative properties, Tome of Power becomes "Soul Tome" that feeds on the souls of his enemies to empower him, and so on.

In the world of Porthal, Sidhe people do not die of old age - when they grow tired of like and start looking their age, they fall into a magical slumber of "renewal", and are placed along with things they made themselves within "renewal chambers" which other races would call "crypts", as they can not discern between slumbering sidhe and a dead one since they cant feel life as sidhe do. After a dosen centuries or so sidhe awaken, former life a distant dream, their will to live renewed, and their skills quickly returning to them, they are met by their bretheren and live on.

Here's my specific feedback: Please add a berserk to the start of the map, killing stuff with the shotgun and chaingun exclusively is a real slog. The arachnotron near the blue key card is stuck because he doesn't have enough room to move around and face the player. The final yellow key door can only be used once, so if the player decides to backtrack they will be softlocked. The requirements to get the secret exit are too obscure and tedious, and using instakill floors without any telegraph is a bad practice. It'd be much better if you just replaced the radsuit/invulnerability room with the secret exit room. The plasmagun is kind of poitnless now that you removed the archvile since you get the bfg almost immediately afterwards, but I suppose you had your reasons. Otherwise it was pretty good, looking around for the secret keys was entertaining.

What always separated OG Doom and Quake for me was how the 3D nature of the latter changed the gameplay with new features and limitations (rooms over rooms, fewer monsters with more health, different methods of secrets and traps)
With the modern era and the lack of 90s limitations, the current id software seems to be splitting them up by having one be singleplayer and the other being multiplayer. Because he prefers Freedoom, and it has certain design differences that warrant different mechanics (Chaingunners wear helmets and don't lose limbs in their death animation, so they have the same armor and incap handling as jackboots and marines).

Check the commented Github issue - he added handling specifically to change how the exit sign on Freedoom Map01 looks, because apparently those guys don't know about the trick to have a ceiling with a different light level from the floor.

You had to learn so much to get anywhere at all in HD and now you're hung up on minor differences in the movement that barely affect the low end of play and massively benefit the high end.

That's the power of the new reduced gravity, fall damage that scales normally instead of arbitrarily fucking you after a certain hard limit, and the fist lunge as of the last stable release. Platforming on the whole is a lot easier and more consistent than under the old physics, and actual combat dynamics haven't changed at all. Higher bulk is more viable with less time wasted on extra trips, that run was done with an 800 bulk loadout. I haven't even gotten into the shit you can pull with walljumps and really taking advantage of midair crouching.

It just works with no extra patch, using filter folders to load different code and assets depending on the IWAD. He's also got ZScript functions that can check for lumps and differentiate accordingly, for things like default pistol handedness or the color of the BFG's dynamic lights.

Yeah, I had noticed that the first fall on erkatane.wad map09 became lethal when it used to be rarely survivable. That map is a total edge case though, the change has made a lot more average drops survivable.

If anything it's doubled down a bit. Gravity was changed specifically to make it more earthlike, because by HD's measurements, vanilla gravity is way excessive. The option for reduced player speeds was also canonized, capping sprint speed to about 30 km/h. Enemies don't just follow primitive and omniscient Doom AI anymore, they can climb and descend walls to chase you and forget about you if you hide and approach from another direction.

HDest is very realistic and challenging, but with the old movement you could do ballsy action movie shit, which if done the right way at the right times could be a real benefit, if you're willing to accept the risk, and if you do the right thing following through. To me that goes well with how in spite of the realistic wound handling and weapon mechanics, you still have wild bullshit like Zerk and outright magic, and the levels are still Doom level design: it's highly realistic yet very fantastical and exaggerated, full of things which could never be IRL, where in spite of realistic wounding mechanics and shooting mechanics, you can play an action hero if you think it's worth the risk.

Think about it: you can roid out and then punch a Cyberdemon in the head until he dies. That makes no sense at all, you'd collapse your arm like an accordion to deliver punches that could do that to a beast that size IRL (it'd be like boxing an elephant), but it can still be done if you dare, and it's cool as fuck if you pull it off.

The new movement and gravity feels lifeless and floaty too, it's supposed to be more realistic gravity, but every single person thinks at first that it's supposed to simulate being in a low gravity environment because of how awkwardly floaty that it is.
Did anyone actually find the fall damage a problem or nuisance in the past?

Things like this, the unavoidable fall start of Ashes. You could fix it with console commando'ing in time and the rest of it was fine otherwise.
There'd be some drops made with Doom's no-fall-damage in mind that were a pain. For any real bullshit I'd run into I had gravity keybinds, one to set it low and the other to reset it.
This, Unreal, and Half Life all let you be an asshole and kill people from what I recall.

There is an interview where they say they didn't realize you could OHKO the Spider Mastermind with the BFG...

... because there is no BFG in the level. You can get the BFG from the 2nd level of that episode onwards.

The truth is that it is a lot easier to test/balance a level if it is a contained thing. Imagine having to worry about what kind of ammos/weapons/items the player got in the previous level.... When nobody even has the correct level order until very late in dev.

This is true for all old FPS that have "fresh starts". In Rise Of The Triad you even have lives, you die you use a life and restart the level open from a fresh start, and there is usually a weapon or two nearby.

There are some exceptions of course, like the first episode of Blood which is obviously designed for continuous play. Good examples being: the super secret of E1M1 gives a Napalm Launcher... but you can't get to that secret until pretty much all enemies are dead. Then, in E1M2 you can find a lot of flares but no flare gun, not even in secret places. Obviously there was one in E1M1. Fresh start is still doable but harder than intended.
Only the first of Blood is like that though.

There are cases where it is hard to view a level as "intended for pistol start" in this day&age but that's because they had a different take on balacing. These days it is assumed that secret places shouldn't count as part of the balancing; but instead the og Doom 1/2 made SOME of the secrets mandatory if you want to have enough ammo. A good example being E4M2, which has nowhere near enough supplies UNLESS you find the secret places.

Yeah, it's just a weird melee weapon at that point. Q2's shotgun may get dwarfed by the SSG in its campaign but that thing at least had some range and little spread, you could actually hit something across a room and not waste pellets.

So I've got the damn Shotguns done. I touched up the Super Shotgun a bit and gave it a new sound and flash (people didn't like the more assymmetric one), and set it up for the full animations, because the other guns are already smoother than Vanilla anyway.
I put a lot of work into the Shotgun, and it's kind of ok I guess. Maybe I'm just salty because the new palette is inhospitable. The lever is there, but slightly subtle, no idea if it'll be proper visible in all screen sizes. Big thanks to Tommy for drawing the lever itself, I really struggled with the perspective.
Luger is just the Pistol, but it's faster.

Subgun has regular fire, and alternate fire, for demonstration purposes. Regular fire is regular Chaingun speed, it works. Alternate fire is slightly faster, at 6 tics per cycle, like the Doom 64 Chaingun. I think that's cool, it'd make the gun a little more fun, I think, but I'd like to hear what people feel about it, because it WILL change the gameplay balance some, and would have to be accounted for.

Sprites are paletted, sounds are converted, so the assets themselves could be just dropped in and the code could be written for them. Mind, this Decorate mod is just an animation demonstration, not part of the submission itself.


Actually fooling around with these right now, I notice that I'm kind of rusty, because I haven't played in a good while, because I can barely see. This discourages me further, because I don't feel confident that I can appropriately playtest the map I'm supposed to be making.
It seems more and more likely that this map will simply not be finished for Halloween.

I already played two of these maps before but I don't remember if I gave any feedback. Well I replayed them again just in case. Played saveless with dsdadoom. Didn't find all the secrets. All good and pretty reasonable difficulty. Looking back, I remembered them being harder and I was anticipating as much for the new ones. They're not too harsh or easy really. My only generalizable observations are that the detailed floors everywhere make it a bit hard to maneuver (maybe intentional, I think scythe makes you fight on stairs a lot for this reason) and that the secrets are often hard to find. I've come around to the idea that something's wrong if the average player can't find any secrets though passive observation, but I know not everyone will agree. You're clearly beyond the point where you need advice about trivial map errors like softlocks (I found none) so it's all gonna be pretty subjective now. uhh
Map1:its easy to completely miss the megaarmor room, I thought it might have been a secret. The pit with a few armor/health bonuses feels like its just there to waste you're time, why not just put them on the floor? The chaingunner by the mancubus is so hard to notice, much less die to. Biggest of all, It's easy to just cheese the archvile/pinky fight by standing on the sky floor and tanking the damage. The soulshphere beforehand means you'll always have enough health for a meager hurtfloor/piglet combo.
Map2:I found no reason to pickup the chainsaw at the start, which is good because I hate chainsawing stuff, but I wonder why it's there. The room with the revenants on pillars is really easy.
Map3:Killing the archviles under the floor in the baron room is a bit awkward. Maybe you could release them when the player hits the two switches.
Map4:I can't tell what the archvile room near the yellow key is for, if it's not a secret it feels pointless to guard a few rockets. I really hate that one switch texture that's a blue/red skull, it's just slightly confusing.

The parts in which I stayed still was me looking in the automap for where to go. At the end of the levels I IDDT'd to see if the levels could be 100%'d. Tried to cheese as much as possible
MAP01: Very easy, good for a starter. Lifts can merge with the environment and look more like wall details than anything, so better use of negative space could be done.
MAP02: Still very easy. The Arachnotron in the blue key fight is useless. Didn't feel threatened until the final act, but even then, still not a very intense fight, as once I knew where to expect the Archvile it was an easy kill and pretty much a breeze. But before that, I died twice: first time I was betting on the exit door being a timer, and somehow didn't consider that the other doors could have timers too. I think that you could make them lowering floors instead, and that'd probably instantly give the player an idea of the fight and increase the anxiety. Second time I messed up bad trying to kill an Archvile that just didn't want to die. On my second death I decided to try MAP03 b4 attempting it again but I also died there and it kind of killed my mood.
MAP03: Difficulty ramping up significantly. This one has a noticeable problem with door combat until the key fights, and the door combat is also present in the previous levels to a lesser extent. Died to the Cyber. Tried using saves when I thought I was gonna die, to find out my prboom+ likes being a bitch, and therefore it wouldn't let me load the save because it thought the demo I was just recording was "old". Didn't beat it, but played most of it.
Honestly, this type of arena level design isn't my shtick, so I won't really speak for what I think of the quality of the levels.

Please god somebody help me. I've been troubleshooting this for an hour now. I just want to make Crystal Viles drop from broken pots. It's not even that I don't understand how Doom works it's just that Hexen is too schizophrenic for me to figure out.
Having it spawn Thing with ID 81, which is what Doombuilder says the Crystal Vile ID is, spawns the Sapphire Planet. I tried going up and down by single digits, testing what they did. Up just spawns a bunch of keys, and down spawns armor and random puzzle pieces but NO CRYSTAL VILE. BOTH OF THE DIRECTIONS STOP PRODUCING ITEMS BEFORE THE CRYSTAL VILE SHOWS UP.

You can blame Carmack for that. Engine was too heavy, so they couldn't make the game challenging by having large amount of enemies or even giving them a proper AI (like being able to dodge attacks). On one hand we got the likes of Dusk which is done by one dude and it's impressive.

Ion Fury was mostly a spectacle for the graphics

Hedon is the only one with GZDoom and being sold and it's meh,spend more time looking for an item than fight

Ultrakill seems to be nothing more than a tacky bullethell with shitty graphics

Nightmare Reapers is interesting but overall looks and plays like shit

Prodeous doesn't seem promising at all

Viscerafest looks nice but took Serious Sam for level design and that's a downgrade

At this point I stick to the likes of Blade of Agony,which is not perfect but feels like unlike the others to be the most polished and interesting and is for free

I don't think it's so much a lack of interest in making things, but the way creative things are received here.
People posting their maps has become much rarer, people making actual mods has become very rare because for some reason this thread seems to have grown a hateboner for everything Decorate/ZScript and getting feedback is a lost cause because people either don't even understand the inquiry or go hurr durr in any direction, that is IF anyone bothers answering at all, but usually it's drowned out in a sea of shitposting. I give the fanbase that no matter what,either drama,limitations or anything it kept going.
Brutal Doom was for many their introduction for the series but then kept looking more on what the community had to offer and were inspired.

I can't comment on how scary Harvester was, as I didn't play it when it was new and gore in video games stopped bothering me years ago, but I felt like it really dropped the ball towards the end. You have this interesting setup with a creepy little town with some kind of spooky cult pulling the strings in the background, along with a bunch of characters who were all disturbing in their own way.

Then it completely shits the bed as soon as you enter the lodge. Harvest being a virtual reality simulation to train serial killers, alongside a ham fisted message about video game violence, felt really stupid to me. The game never even explained what being a Harvester means apart from killing people either. All that build up for an unsatisfying-as-fuck ending, it's a fucking shame.

I liked both New Order and Old Blood but it was all downhill from there.
I like Blazko's face and personality more but that's it.

RTCW came out at the right moment.
FPS games were having major changes,more experimental and WW2 setting wasn't overused yet.

Having their own engine is admirable, but REALLY not worth it when it performs like utter shit.

On my work PC that plays most complex scenes on GZDoom with all the bling you can get at 100+fps, this simple room with 2 light sources, a dozen 3D models and 2 dozen sprites brings my PC to 15-25 fps crawl.

Ion Fury runs at 120 fps no problem. Pretty sure EDuke 32 could handle anything this game can throw at it and run 3 times as fast.

I don't think there's any easier way of communication than an imageboard. But I agree that it might not be "instant", though with such a project and having people from around the globe, you just CAN'T communicate with everyone at all times directly.
