When it comes to Kart-Racing discussion, I always see people having a big hateboner for Mario Kart 64 (either saying it aged poorly or that its the worst MK game), why is that?
I find it more fun than later installments in the series, and compared to the other titans of its genre (DKR or CTR) it still holds up fairly well, and I might say its much better in the multiplayer aspect compared to Diddy or Crash.

>> No.8245642

>why is that?
They're homos. MK64 is good, and I say this while preferring CTR over anything else.

>> No.8245659

With few exceptions each mainline Mario Kart game is slightly superior to the precious, Mario Kart 64 is the second worse non-mobile Mario Kart game. Mario Kart games are supposed to be casual. Modern polish and corporate style-over-substance blandness suits them.

>> No.8245667

People that say MK64 is shit got filtered by the rubberbanding AI (which balances itself by only being able to use a few items that aren't that obnoxious, specially compared to future games in the franchise, also mini-turbos, use them).

I believe that Ocarina and Mario 64 are the greatest games ever made, but saying that Mario Kart 64 is the best in the series is ridiculous. The only good thing it has is the battle mode, which is inferior to the battle mode on Mario Kart DS anyway as it doesn't have bots.

It looks absolutely terrible, the controls are not good. With the speed the bad controls then become a serious problem - and Mario Kart 8 is clearly the fastest. The items are no better than other games.

Mario Kart 64 is pretty average if you aren't viewing it with extreme nostalgia. Maybe average isn't the right word, but it's basic - it's the bare minimum that you should expect from Mario Kart. There are better kart racers from this era. There are better driving games from this era. Arguably every Mario Kart after 64 is superior.

>> No.8245837

>>8245798
People only tolerate nu-Mario Kart because due to the ultra casual aspect (and because it has "Mario" and "Kart" in the title) . As far back as CTR to modern day with Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and CTR Nitro-Fueled the entire series has been consistently one-upped by random games.

Mk64 is that exception unfortunately, it's a much more dumbed down game than Mariokart on SNES. It looks prettier but its tracks are unbelievably boring and easy by comparison, and every single added mechanic and item made the game worse except for AI finally using the same items as you. There is no situation whatsoever where I wouldn't leap to play MKDD, MKDS or SMK over MK64. If I want to hit up 5th gen kart racing in particular, CTR (which came 2 years later) still completely annihilates it with its good mechanics and interesting, bouncy tracks.

>> No.8245974

As far as I know, people just pick their favorites based on their own childhood memories with friends.
But objectively, and thinking about go-karting specifically, I still like MK64 the best because of 2 things: the mini-turbo mechanic, I think it's excellent and my favorite out of any other similar game including later MK installments, and because of the 3 receway tracks (Mario, Luigi and Royal) which are the ones that feel the most like actual go-karting instead of intricate adventure-like paths.
go-karting circuits don't need anything too long or adventurous, it just needs to have good balance between curves and straight lines to abuse the mini-turbo as much as you can.
I'll take MK64 and the 3 raceway circuits over any other "adventure" racing game like DKR, CTR, etc.
