8234243 No.8234243 [Reply] [Original]

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related. Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Anyone own a GBS? Trying to send video from my laptop to the GBS, then sending that signal to a PVM, but it's not displaying properly, just a bunch of lines everywhere. (Laptop only has a DisplayPort and HDMI output, but DP is being used by another monitor.)
This is the adapter I bought, www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZMV7RL2/ , unless a direct HDMI to VGA cable works, or if it's something in the UI I need to mess with. Just wanted to stream shows on a CRT, nothing fancy.

TL;DR nobody can tell you unless they had that same exact model and tested it.
>>8235415
Getting color to tv that shows ntsc compsite in B&W can be bypassed with using RGB scart cable(if the console actually outputs RGB and NOT composite via the scart cable, scart connector can carry multiple signals), or with Koryuu Transcoder+ RetroTINK Comp2RGB Transcoder, its stupid, expensive and a lot of hassle, but it works, with no quality loss and doesn't add any input lag.

The KV-29CL10K looks better on the outside but supposedly the KV-29CL11K was almost never used being sold because the original owner died.

I believe the CL10 vs CL11 is just color difference. Both being made in 2003 and have the same specs except the remote design.

I just wanna point out that you can do 240p@60hz in a PC CRT by using BFI and 120hz. Sure it's a bit darker but the trade-off is worth it.
Alternatively you can use 480p@60hz without BFI and then use fake scanlines but that doesn't look as good.

Also worth noting that although rare there are VGA CRT's out there that support 15khz natively.

I have a question about PC CRT monitors. How high does the scanrate go on any later 14" or even 10" models? I'd love something small with a half-decent scanrate, but all i've come across locally is like 54kHz models.

Hello all, I have a question regarding an issue that's been driving me INSANE for the last few minutes. I own a KV-27FS120 that I have accessed the service menu on MULTIPLE times. Today I went to go into the service menu and I CAN'T!!!! Is there some way I could have accidentally disabled it, or locked it??

Here's the thing, I look up the service manual pdf, it tells me Display, 5, Vol+, Power. I've done that I don't know how many times. But for some reason, it feels wrong? Like I used a different code last time, maybe something like Mute, 5, Vol-, not very different but still, different. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!! Picrel is my factory remote, so I'm EXTRA confused as to why this isn't working :(

>Display, 5, Vol+, Power
You've got the right code. You might want to try hitting TV, the button underneath the power button before trying it again. Not exactly the same situation, but I used my remote on multiple TVs once and had to hit the TV button before I could use the service menu again on whichever set I had on at the time.

I think most people just want to have a smallish CRT as a side TV in addition to their HD TVs. Not everyone has or is willing to make the space for some 30 inch chonklord on their TV setup, or is willing to set up an SD television as their main set.

Not being able to single person lift the bigger CRTs is definitely a problem too though.

I've got a '89 Denon amp and I bought a pair of late '70s ESS monitors last week to replace my old not-so-good JVCs. They sound great, also tested them with my relative's NAD 3020 and liked the results a lot.
I'll probably get a better amp in the future, hopefully something from the '80s, too. What can I say, I like old hi-fi equipment.

My CRT's picture is getting notably dimmer as time passes and probably needs recapping (not only because of the picture fading, but because the caps themselves are probably aging and I don't want leaky cap fluid all over a mostly good tube).
Now, I used to solder in middle school as a hobby, but that was almost 20 years ago and I was kinda kackhanded even back then- so I'm sure as shit not ready to open a big electrocution box and start fiddling. But these days, in Australia especially, there's precious few people that have worked with CRTs and even if I find someone with those skills they'll probably charge an arm and a leg for their services.
tl;dr - I should probably start learning how to do basic maintenance to keep my CRT (and other aging consoles/accessories) in working order.

To that end, and yeah I know this isn't exactly the right place, is this a good enough set of tools for a beginner?
In terms of learning curve I'd like to try cleaning out all my controllers, recap my SNES and redo the hackjob RGB mod I did with a cheap and shitty soldering kit from Jaycar, maybe try some hand SMT work, and slowly work up the nerve/courage to buy a desoldering station and unscrew the BVM.

Yeah the station is fine, and I don't see anything wrong with the tweezers. I wouldn't buy a complete solder tip set though all you really need is a good chisel tip.

If you're aiming to disassemble it you're going to want to just unplug it for like a day to let everything discharge. Look up how to make a discharging tool for the anode cap. The first time you're taking it apart you'll want to take some pictures and mark down where everything goes to make sure you can put it back properly and familiarize yourself with the thing.

If you're trying to adjust it while it's on it's not that dangerous, you really have to try to touch any live connections in a tv. Apparently, going by the info I found on the shmups forum, JP21 isn't nearly as common in Japan as SCART is in Europe. It's mainly older sets that have it, the newer ones tend to have D-terminal (component) instead.
Also, most newer Sony TVs have the AV multi in, for the same connector that's found on Playstation 1-3. I've seen there are double-ended AV multi cables and adapters available.

This is kind of true. Video game screenshots in magazines showed scanlines but publishers used RGB monitors and a great photography setup. EGM even wrote about their setup once and confirmed they used a very expensive PVM of some type.

At home most people in North America had shit cables so most never saw crisp scan lines on consoles, but we did have arcades with very nice RBG displays. The dream was always to have a display at home look as good as the magazine photos and arcade monitors, and this meant we wanted visible scan lines long before we even knew what they were called.

I know this is the CRT thread, but I'd like to ask you fellas something because you would know a lot more about handling SD signals than the average /vr/ browser:
I guess overall, what's your opinions on 480i and 480p?

I very much like the way scanlines appear, so 480i has always felt like a sin- and I'm not privileged enough to own a multiformat monitor (let alone a high TVL unit to retain clear scanline separation even with 480i/480p) so 31Khz is exclusively the realm of flatscreens for me. Would it be a good idea to purchase a downscaler to "line-halve" >480p/interlaced signals, to play 6th and 7th gen titles on a CRT? Or is that too aggressive in darkening the picture and distorting the details? I imagine it'll harm text legibility if nothing else.
Basically I'm on the fence about getting the new retrotink specifically because it can allegedly do downscaling as well as upscaling with motion adaptive deinterlacing, and the option to either play on a CRT via downscaling (if handled well) or to get a get simulacrum of the CRT experience with low-lag deinterlacing+upscaling on a 4K OLED sounds very appealing. But it costs a big chunk of change and I don't know if we're expecting some kinda retro signal Renaissance with all the FPGA stuff that's happened recently.

wiiU too. Although, the text gets more and more unreadable as the newer the games get, and especially if you dont have a widescreen crt or if you have under 20" crt. At least on 576i/PAL60, I used to play my ps3 on my crt many years ago until I bought flat tv. Only time when playing ps3-gen(ignoring wii) on crt is superior is motion clarity, my LG CX 55" upscales 720p games nicely, and it looks great, but in motion 30fps games, and lets be honest 90% of ps3 games can barely hold 20fps, looks jittery/laggy unless you move the camera slowly or if the game is mostly static. Its not as bad as I made it sound like, but the crt always has crystal clear motion clarity that even the austic 300hz gaming monitors dont have, which doesn't do a difference to/help 30/60fps games anyway.

For sixth gen, OSSC + rgb scart cables works well and looks great on my LG CX, but you do get the flicker from BOB interlacing which some people hate, and if the game jumps between resolutions then you get few seconds of black screen until OSSC adjusts. The upcoming pro model and retrotink 5x dont have these problems, but they also cost 5x more, that or just play on CRT like developers intended™.

Just installed Voltour RGB mod, playing on my RGB modded NTSC TV. Gonna run through both N64 castlevania games then maybe Blue Stinger on Dreamcast. Still waiting on my degaussing tool to come in, hoping I can then move the speakers closer then use the degaussing tool to fix the color issues having the speakers close to the TV causes. Full disclosure: I mainly play PS2 and GameCube games, and nowadays ISO-patching/bootloading + Swiss respectively let you force 240p/480p with decent and perfect compatibility respectively (some PS2 games do misbehave though).
The RT5x supposedly downscales by chucking out every second line (unlike the interpolation function of the extron emotia/RGB Interface DDSP switch) so it should be robust and lag-free.

>For sixth gen, OSSC + rgb scart cables works well and looks great on my LG CX, but you do get the flicker from BOB interlacing which some people hate, and if the game jumps between resolutions then you get few seconds of black screen until OSSC adjusts. The motion-adaptive deinterlacing (vs. bob) is like a game-changer for me because I'm someone that doesn't like the bob/weave techniques. I was just gonna grab/build a GBSC for it, but the RT5x has the downscaling function too, and I'll be honest I like the look of the new filters.
Do we know anything about the Pro OSSC coming up? The guys who made the N64 digital are also working on something that simulates phosphor bleed (eg. see the moonlight reflecting on the water in the background in my image), allegedly, and that's really cool if so. Missing out on that kinda thing, and the colour space issue on the tink is the only reason I'm worried about sinking $300 into it now.

Huh. I have a MiSTer but I never even thought to test out scaler effects because I'd always just use it with my CRT, as the consoles it replicates primarily output 240p.
Anyway I really was/am excited for some more advanced phosphor emulation stuff like I mentioned earlier (investigating further it's called the Morph, from Pixel FX), and it'd be great if we could go so far as to simulate a curved screen, but that might be years down the track still. For now I should just have a play around and see if these MiSTer filters are any good, because being honest the ones the RT5x has look fairly decent already compared to the lazy halfbaked SLG effects you'd see 5-10 years ago and the RT5x could be a good buy while waiting for a next-gen 4k scaler or something.

But yeah thanks for the link. I've got testing to do, so I'll go ahead and shut up now.

What else do you guys use? How do you find out about places with CRTs irl?

Facebook Marketplace is the only option left in the US. Craigslist and eBay are both garbage. I've gotten amazing deals on FBM though, like a $100 FW-900 and $25 2070SB in 2019. It's all about your general location and how far you're willing to drive. In my case, a 12 hour round trip is fine on a day off. Crossed three state lines and the Canadian border once. Around 1500 mile round trip all said and done. The longer you drive, the more time you should spend getting out and enjoying the stop a little. When I go to Minneapolis (10hr round trip), I stop in at Starcade and walk around the mall to stretch my legs, grab a bite to eat, and people watch. You can turn it into a mini vacation and not just a cannonball run.

>but why though
Same reason a lot of crap hardware is invented and sold at a loss: someone thought they could make money locking customers in.

This thing was contemporary to that, and with such an awful LCD that the CRT would have been a marked improvement. I did have one that I installed linux on and used for IRC in those days. Was a fun little machine, but if it hadn't been sold at a loss, would have been way overpriced for what it was.

Anyway, if it were me, I'd grab that sucker and see what still worked and didn't. Even if only the tube is good, a $100 universal arcade monitor chassis with it would make a good replacement for an arcade machine with a dead/burnt in display.

Probably a dumb question but maybe people here can help:
>got my HDMI -> RCA adapter today

>text a bit too small to read in the Pie config on this screen so I unplug the Pie and adjust settings on another larger monitor
>plug back into CRT, colors are fucked, all text/visuals distorted, reds are blue, etc

>try it on other monitor again, colors are fine
>???
>test Macbook on same CRT just to see if its one of the cables

No he is correct. Plasma began being adopted in early 2000s and DLP in 2002 which is when I got my Samsung 50". By 2005 these costs came and most of my friends had one at this point. Regretfully most of my PS2 experiences were on that shit Samsung DLP TV. Eventually LCD took over by the PS3 era.

CRT obviously existed at this time and were better for gaming, but everyone was too busy with watching Gladiator on their new 50" tv to care.
