[ERROR] No.8230470 [Reply] [Original]

Part of the Horace trilogy for the ZX Spectrum and among the earliest commercial games released for it. Guide Horace around a maze in this Pac-Man derivative and eat pellets. When they're all eaten, go to the exits. There are some sections of wall with hidden teleport points and several baddies that chase you around. Also there's a ringing bell in the corner of the maze that sounds until you touch it. When you do this the enemies momentary become angry and start chasing you at double speed. There are bonus fruits but unlike Pac-Man the game has no way to actually neutralize the enemies; you just have to avoid them.

Since this was 1982 the result is something that looks more VIC-20 than Spectrum games as they would develop later on. It does have a definite charm that many later titles lack especially when they try too hard to recreate Japanese console and arcade games. There is a C64 port of Hungry Horace but although it's a lot slicker, smoother-playing, and has music, it feels too slick and lacks the rough-hewn charm of the Spectrum version particularly the sound effects.

So for such an early game it's more charming and arguably much more fun than the many futile late '80s-early '90s attempts at porting 16-bit arcade games to the Speccy.

His first console was a DSL, like many kids his age whose parents weren't deranged hipster faggots. But he wanted play older pokemans so I set him up with some emulators and let him explore old systems and their libraries. He even figured out that emulation is gay casual shit all on his own.
