tsop is the same as modchip but you dont need to use a modchip since you can use the xboxs bios chip instead, you gotta softmod first to be able to flash the tsop tho. if you get a modchip you can just plug in and go youd probably wanna upgrade the hdd though. Both tsop and modchip are better than softmodding. If you tsop you can reset to a non softmodded state after but you will have the tsop flashed with a custom bios

for almost every user this is true
from my experience modchips can have onboard rom banks to boot off instead of using the xbox bios. Handy if you have a CPU modded system to change clock speeds for games that don't play well with non-stock speeds. also booting dev bios

Mine is TSOP flashed, and all I had to do to upgrade the hard drive was drop the new one in and set it up with a Hexen disc. No idea if it's any more complicated than a modchip for RAM or CPU upgrades though.

There's a very small list of compatible DVD drives, and any you find will most likely not be on it. Your best best is to get a drive from a different xbox.
alternatively, the lowest effort option is to just softmod it and play games off the stock hard drive. It only has room for one game, so you'll need to delete and transfer again every time you want to play a different game. Kind of shitty, but it's the only method to get your xbox playing games again that doesn't involve new hardware or even opening the xbox.

With a dead DVD drive, you'll still need to open the Xbox and do some hotswap fuckery between the Xbox and a PC (USB to IDE adapter) to do any mods to it.
