Long-time RCT fan here.
I am far from being good at this game, but here are a handful of tips I have collected for OpenRCT2:
- Every coaster has a couple of minimum requirements they need to meet to avoid excitement penalties (pic-related).
- As a rule of thumb, always price your roller coasters by multiplying excitement by 2 and adding half of your intensity.
All coasters have specific weights attached to the 3 main stats that add to its actual value, but most of them should comply to the above.
Example: Wooden Roller Coaster with 6 excitement and 8 intensity (and 5 nausea). This sometimes doesn't work, however.
(6 x 2) + (8 / 2) = 16 -> 16$
Using a price calculator, 6 8 5 for the Wooden Roller Coaster equals $17.40, close enough.
- Umbrellas can be priced at $20, because guests will pay any price to buy umbrellas when it's raining.
- In scenarios where you can only charge for the park entry and not the rides themselves, don't place any ATMs or toilets inside your park. This will cause guests to leave, thus increasing the chance of new guests to generate.
- When your queue lines are suddenly empty, your rides have aged. Lower their prices slightly until a couple of guests start queuing up again
- Both the Lift (transport ride) and the Observation Tower (gentle ride) share the highest scenery bonus weight in the entire game. Their excitement benefits tremendously from nearby scenery, so spam gardens until the bonus maxes out. The Ferris Wheel comes in second, but is far.
- Transport rides are useless 9 times out of 10
- Don't be afraid to max out your loan in scenarios. Most scenarios are nowhere near long enough for you to pay back all of your loans in interest, which means that loans = free money.
- Pathfinding sucks in these games. I rarely use double-paths and never use triple-paths. End your paths with the entrance of another coaster, buy signs and use their no-entry function to block your exit ways.
- Short coasters > Long coasters

all of this is nice to keep in mind, but remember that you are not a slave to a calculator, and you can build whatever you want. Making money in the most efficient way possible isn't necessary unless you're playing a challenge park.

(cont.)
- Read this guide (pic-related) if you have trouble building good coasters. Learn about banking your turns and the significance of lateral Gs.
- Walls (scenery) do nothing.
- Sell all pre-existing scenery and roads you're not going to use anyway in scenarios.
- Swinging Inverter Ship, Go-Karts and Launched Freefall are the best thrill rides and can be priced at very high prices.
SIS can be priced at $10.20 right away, despite being an extremely cheap and simple ride.
Go-Karts at 4 excitement can be charged at ~$15 (I use 18 stations for max karts and just quickly loop it around, I set it to 1 lap for max throughput)
Launched Freefall at 60m & 119 km/h can be charged at $21.
- Golfing is absolutely useless.
- Due to bad pathfinding, non-tracked boat rides produce very bad throughput. Always create tracks for your boat rides, unless you don't care about efficiency.
- Put First-Aid rooms at the exits of your more nausea-inducing rides.
- If you really want to use transport rides, never use shuttle mode. Always use multiple stations & circuit mode.
- Guests will literally never refuse to ride your transport rides when you set them to be free.
This means that all guests, no matter how angry or how much of an intensity slut they are, will queue up for your transport rides, as long as they don't have to pay for it and the pathfinding gods are gracious.
- OpenRCT2 has a "Highlight path issues" View Mode that allows you to see all vomit, litter and acts of vandalism for you to adjust your staff and replace broken stuff.
- Under options, the Tree-looking tab, check "Show guest purchases as animation" to re-live your childhood.

There are a lot of other tips and tricks you can find on Youtube or the RCT2 forums.

I love playing scenarios and most of these are geared towards them.
You can cheese most scenarios with micro-coasters and many other exploits, but that's where I draw the line. Actually, I don't even charge $20 for umbrellas, either.

>- Transport rides are useless 9 times out of 10
Transport rides have a caveat where they will never be turned down when you charge 0 for them. Guests do not use them to get around intentionally but don't fixate on that like it kills the ride's purpose. You still ship chunks of guests to areas of your park that take a long time to see foot traffic. Someone at the front of your park is passing 20+ checks on rides, shops and other actions by the time they consider something to the rear, which you want to be just as well-ridden as your rides near the front, so you use transport rides to dump guests there.
>- Short coasters > Long coasters
Scam rides are a shit playstyle that make the game unfun, do not follow this advice except in shitty parks with paid entry, and if you find yourself doing it, reconsider why you're playing the game at all since you've decided to effectively not build rollercoasters in rollercoaster tycoon. You will still be rewarded for a longer coaster with higher stats for it, just make sure it has strong throughput.

Additionally, "harder guest generation" scenarios will shit on this, as tracked rides that are longer than 600 meters with 6+ intensity will increase your guests by twice their normal guest generation amount after 1000 guest cap is enforced in calculation. Short rides will not contribute to increases at all after 1000 in these scenarios.

There are only a handful of scenarios that use the harder guest generation option, and obviously, in those cases, I'd recommend building exciting coasters.

I'd say the management sim aspect is only part of the initial hook, what gets you into the rest of the game. Pretty much anyone who really gets into these games exhausts scenarios and just gets creative. Oh man, I guess it's supposed to be a mediocre game but just seeing that screenshot makes me want to play it again. The fireworks/fountains sequencer is really fun, there's a (hidden) camera path editor which is similarly nice. The one bullshit feature is the passport machine which just feels like a massive cope to artificially spread guests throughout the park, but overall I had loads of fun with it, mostly in sandbox mode. Terrain editing is nice too, you can make waterfalls between any appropriately positioned bodies of water, and stuff like that.
>>8243907
There's two expansions, one adds zoos (Wild), the other adds pools (Soaked). I used to play with both, it's pretty funky to have a coaster with lions as scenery or something. The animal management features are pretty limited though. Soaked is great, you can (obviously) build waterslides like you'd build coasters.

>> No.8247361

>>8243861
I played it very little but didn't like it. The graphics are not as pretty as the previous isometric editions, the feeling of RCT is lost there, in my opinion. The dynamics is different so most of what works in RCT1 and 2, is different in RCT3, whole new game. The only thing I really liked was that the guests are varied and come in groups.

I wish they went for another route and made more changes with the original framework, like the varied guests but with RCT graphics, new systems for how guests walk so that they can wander though wide patios more realistically, make some of them swim, some of them drown, the ability to save groups of scenario objects for reuse (like you do with rides, but without rides), create new tasks for the staff, perhaps even make them strike (lol), make graphics more realistic without losing the isometric soul, like puddles after a rain, lightning that can strike trees or even rides... Anyway, plenty of things to add without messing up with the core of the game.

I think about how Pokemon went from the very simple first gen to the current 3d gens adding up as they go, without breaking the gameplay.

The only way that I know is to create a ride next to it and save the track design with the scenario, then you build the ride with them and delete the ride.

But there is plenty of things they could have worked on without messing too much with gameplay. There should be more varied paths like a narrow path that takes half a tile, wide paths that take two or three tiles, the ability to choose material, rail and color options separately. I'd like areas for picnics and eating tables where guests can sit together, an admnistrative building from which staff must come and go, guests falling down and injuring their knees having to go to the infirmary, guests coming in from cars that they have to park near the park.

Welcome to Appaloosa!
A small, but fine farming field turned into an amusement park.

Friends and family, neighbours and foreigners, will be welcomed by our Meet'n'Greet coaster that is fit for newcomers and veterans to rollercoasters alike.
Past the information desk we have our old, wooden Water Wheel, but we've swapped the paddles with (mostly) safe seats for our visitors!

MINES AHEAD! That's right, our old Coal Mine? Turned into a rollercoaster.
The Drilling Shack adjacent to the Coal Mine houses our underground Twist ride aptly named "Drill Master".

East of our old Coal Mine, we have Wild Apple Acres. Our most ambitious coaster yet, ride through our apple orchard, and then through our record-holding giant, carved-up apple.

If you decide to go west, instead, you'll be met by Carrot Tops, meet our giant carrots from above and below!

Northwards, we find ourselves two lovely twins, Petal Iris and Petal Dahlia.
These beautiful petal rides travel through our flower gardens and are engineered to move in a synchronized dance.

Finally, we have the Forest of the Young, a little corner in our farm for our littlest of guests.
The rides here are free and perfect for busy parents who can't leave their children at home.
Our Hidden Treehouse features a fun and addicting spiral.
Our Mystery Forest is a maze so simple that not even a 6-yearr old would get lost in.
Our Car Ride, despite having an excitement value of roughly 0.30, is the most popular ride of the FotY yet, THAT ALONE should tell you how awesome it is.

Visit us now!

Actually helpful tip since the block section means you care about throughput: instead of putting it at the very end of the station platforms, the entrance to a rollercoaster being in the middle of where the lead train would be (so around 2 tiles back from the front on this coaster) can distribute guests out onto the train the fastest. Little no-cost optimization.

Chris Sawyer was an absolute savant to program one of the most complex video games back then in an almost completely unexplored genre in Assembly of all fucking languages.
Best of all, it worked, the game was a huge success and defined the childhood of so many people. And all it took was a brilliant programmer combined with an artist.

It's the most inspiring game dev story of all time, a man chasing his dreams to create whatever the fuck he wants no matter what.

Assembly is a low level language but it is just a language. It's how games were made before x86 was standardized (so only one command set to compile into) and it's what Sawyer was experienced with. I feel like I'd enjoy a greater indulgence in the simulation elements .. maybe I should give PC a try. I mentioned this in a thread last week I think but I'd love to see the concept evolved with
>more staff types (shop/stall workers, stockers, garbage handlers, ride staff/ticket takers, engineers, QA staff that control access to guest $/happiness info, maybe marking/executives with stats, etc)
>separate build/operate phases and an open/close cycle for the park
>more realistic pricing (could tie into the above where you simulate a few days per season and get 50x the cash for each day to account for the intervening days (e.g. simulate 7 days a year per 210 day season)
>more robust research / tech tree to unlock options as you go, and policies to implement a la ordinances in sc3k/4/cities skylines (e.g. fast passes

I get a lot of enjoyment around the aesthetic/design half of the game but the simulation half is comparatively shallow by contemporary standards

RCT2 has some solid UI choices. The game plays fairly directly and understandably. So few times have I needed a tutorial/guide. The Planet series, specifically Zoo, is a real mess. I honestly cannot tell if the game is testing that the player knows to sell and correct bad designs, or challenging them to build around them like you say. Could be either, because sometimes scenarios do set up bad things to make you assess what to keep, such as the Rio carnival that will sink you if you don't get a handle on expenses. The above scenario is also probably supposed to be confusing due to the doubled up ride types and frequent underground dips (plus underground stations) and trees everywhere. I colored the kart tracks in the screenshot just to distinguish them.

Took me a long while.
My economy got going very early after building my first couple of coasters and a Gokart.
The rollercoasters were really difficult to deal with, obviously whoever made the map chose some of the hardest coasters to get a high excitement for.
Since money was no issue, it was more a matter of time, rather than difficulty to design all 5, although I've had to re-edit them all about 5 times due to how unfamiliar I was with each coaster's weaknesses.
There was no time limit, so the only challenge really was patience.

It was kind of enjoyable to learn about coasters I never use, I had to look up the source code to figure out stat penalties.
Most of the rides scored lower than 7.20 and I had to add scenery and water to push them over the edge. I gave the multi-dimension coaster a small junior coaster to synchronize with.

I always forget how bad RCT3 looks when you don't go through the effort of actually placing scenery unlike RCT1/2

I genuinely feel like if RCT3's UI wasn't so horrendously ugly and if they ported over songs from RCT1 & 2, it would have been a just as popular as the other games.

also if it wasn't 3d

I can probably host another server Friday. Any suggestions/requests for a park/scenario?

It had to be 3d to keep up with the rest of the industry.

It being 3D was both the best and the worst thing to happen to it. It enabled the CoasterCam to actually be possible, which allowed for the RTC3 youtube community to absolutely flourish with some of the most creative concepts and designs in the entire franchise. But at the same time, it made actually designing scenery much more time consuming since you had to account for all camera angles and detail on a much more microscopic level.
And it doesn't help the default grass is this puke yellow color; game looks much better with the verdant green grass.

I unironically have significantly more hours in RCT3 than in RCT1/2 combined, even after getting back into OpenRCT a couple of years ago

I heard my roommate playing it the other day and I fell back down the well

I thought I escaped this game

the only problem is that it was early 3D, so it aged poorly compared to the timeless sprites of 1 & 2

god I fucking HATE rct3's UI. It's fucking dog shit. Smallest fucking buttons, everything in a different place than it was in RCT2, and just no charm whatsoever. I don't really have any problem with the game except the fucking UI

Yeah, the 3D had it’s pros and cons but RCT2(d) lol) will always have that timeless AND nostalgic quality it’s simplicity brings whereas RCT3 can only really harbour an aged nostalgia which less people can appreciate I guess.

Also I think it not being able to run as well on low end hardware meant it never have the peak and popularity 2 had, you still can’t really build fuckhuge and schizophrenically OCDetailef parks on anything other than RCT2 either without dealing with frametimes in or around the seconds range.

RCT2 seems an endlessly intricate diorama whereas the 3D games will always be a block of marble which can only be chiselled to a finite degree before it can no longer support itself.

If I remember correctly, one of the coasters ended up broken so if you deleted any part of it it would invalidate the scenario. I'm sure that's wrong though.

Sorry, meant to say "deleted part of the station".
