Hey there /vr/. I'm NOT the organizer for /v/'s latest Super Mario World collab hack. Currently, the hack is close to being completed. I'm posting here rather than /v/ because this board moves a bit slower, and there isn't as much concern about the Thread being bumped out before it's too late, and there's things in /trash/ that I wish I hadn't seen.

Feel free to use the thread for discussion on the project and the few works-in-progress that need to be taken care of before release.

Maybe organizer will release the hack in this thread.

once again, the resprite is cool. I think it's important to distinguish the boss from common enemies.
speaking of which, as I said in /trash/, I hope an increment can be added for 2/5 hits. don't get me wrong, the wizard boss came out great, and I was impressed with how the programmer anon intuitively got my concept, but I want to polish and perfect him. I think the current jump in difficulty is a bit jarring, so at 2/5 hits, the magic shot should go about 2x as fast (instead of zipping like a bullet), and the shell should be returned at normal speed instead of fast. at 3/5, the current fast behavior would kick in.
the issue seems to be with shell return, my idea is to maybe invert the normal/fast responses for 2/5, hopefully that works.

just thought of another nitpick. I've playtested my boss many a time, and occasionally he appears inside the yellow blocks and is unable to get a shot off. that seems like another issue that could be fine-tuned by programming him to not appear over tiles. I wouldn't want to cordon off the border though, because as yellow blocks disappear, he can sometimes gain footholds there, which should stay in.

That Robinson port is so much nicer than what's in he hack. If the porter were here we should get a txt and maybe figure out where to put it if the level author isn't here. just thought of another consideration. assuming you get the slow shell reflect to work, you could maybe put it one hit earlier, ie extend it so the second hit gets reflected slowly, then fast reflect takes over on 3 hits.

Anon who made these musics here. Those are just things I made quickly with midi2smw to try.
The first song I was not happy with how it sounded with the SMW samples and couldn't make it better so I gave up.
The second is alright but needed some optimizations to reduce the insert size and I wanted to free the channel the saw sfx use so it could be used in the layer 2 level but I got lazy and gave up.
I could always post the midis and unfinished .txt here I guess.

Idea for OP if he hasn't decided on a extra ending yet: Make it be based on the credits from Kirby Super Star. It starts with Moot sleeping in his bed and then it teleports you to the next room where you can see his house and then it scrolls up like a vertical autoscroller showing the credits.

The problem is that the original song hasn't been ported yet. If you think the credits might be too short you could show off random stills from the game like in Earthbound.

If you like the idea I could help out with the graphics but I can't code ASM.

that's for the better. I didn't mention this in my write-up, but kusoge definitely ventured towards annoying difficulty at times (although I still beat it). while we're on this topic, I think CBT Blue Switch Palace, Enchanted Midnight, and the hot/cold level in the forest could be taken down a couple notches. don't get me wrong, they're good levels, but sometimes the execution is too intense for where they're placed, or maybe it's the pacing, where you have to execute on lots of shit in a row.

I have a few gripes about Key Below The Door. I dont care if you chalk points 1 2 and 3 up to me being a little bitch, but point 4 and 5 are objectively correct and I personally haven't seen them mentioned before.

The removal of a single muncher would make this level 200% better in my book.

Thats by design, there's no way to get the p switch without using i frames. My complaint is that the margin for error to not lose both your powerups is so damn small. Lose your momentum on one of the munchers and you're done.

Also in Defiance there's this janky ass mushroom block that creates a solid invisible block above it, because theres a coin above it. I'm pretty sure the author already knows about this though. Screen 04 sublevel FF.

I played through booster twice and the only thing I found that was of concern was how you could cuck yourself out of a checkpoint while gathering the yoshi coins for the secret exit if you're too good at it, but this was known by author and theres no easy workaround. Basically after getting a yoshi coin you should take the checkpoint then respawn the checkpoint by taking an intentional death. There was also one small design oversight that was brought to the authors attention, where you could overshoot a koopa you're supposed to land on, the author knows about this as well. I'll play through it again after I manage to beat the blue palace again and will report back if I find anything.

I tried looking at the Booster overshoot, but it doesn't look simple to fix without potentially messing with the intended solution. The main issue is the overshoot requires a frame perfect jump off the platform and requires semi-strict positioning to get. There's no Koopa location that both the intended and frame-perfect solution will properly hit. I think this isn't unique either, there's several other locations where a frame-perfect jump with precise position will likely also result in an unintentional overshoot, it's a quirk in SMW physics letting a fake "P-speed" be carried unintentionally. I think I'm just going to leave it as-is, sorry to the people that are "too good" or whatever, it's just not possible to compensate every jump for this issue.
