Welcome to The Garage, a thread where fans of racing vidya can discuss their favourite arcade, sim, kart, and any other kinds of racing games. If you’re looking for something new to play or are new to the genre ask other Anons for recommendations and remember to gear up and have fun.

The previous thread suffered a blown head gasket: >>8170467

Remember to bump, /vr/ has been faster as of late and threads get archived much quicker now. Don't be shy: ask questions, share experiences! If anyone has ideas for community events, speak up!

My dad told me that I should play a driving simulation game yesterday, and I remembered that the Gran Turismo series was used to teach driving lessons at one point, so I decided to start playing hope. Hoping this goes well anons, I don’t play racing games very often but I’m always willing to open up to new stuff.

>> No.8224721

>>8224696
The rival cars are prerendered, but the player car is a 3D model rendered live on the GBA. You can see that it's updated slower than the track - Top Gear Rally looks like it's going to be choppy on first look but the track movement is smooth, unlike other 3D racers on the system.

It actually gives me a similar feel to Sega Rally - not heavy simulationist but arcadelike with rally elements. It does have traction factors and tire options as well as pretty satisfying drifting, which is why I like it. If you aren't good at the game's drifting (handbrake just by hitting brake and gas simultaneously) it gets kinda hard later. The more simulationist rally game is V-Rally 3 and it has a more fully 3D track, but the physics and invisible track boundaries feel unfun to me, while TGR lets you slide on and off the road.

Basically, you initiate a drift by letting the gas off, making a big negcon twist (or long d-pad tap in case you're using digital controller) and then hitting gas again. The steeper the turn is, the more you should twist / make a longer tap. After that, you should countersteer with small twists / taps to the opposite direction to keep the car straight and avoid spin outs. It's like a tight rope balancing. The straighter the car is, the more speed you retain. You don't want to drift sideways like in Initial D - you will lose speed that way.

It is entirely possible to hit that sweet long twist/tap spot during the drift initiation that you won't require countersteering, but requires timing practice and is different for different turns and cars configurations.

Then again because of that I use the gnade until I can afford the abeille and use that for every non extreme oval race for the rest of the cups. I could just use Mednafen or something, but I like the shaders in retroarch.

This car is fucking impossible without Negcon at the extreme oval track. My d-pad tapping game is bad.

Its not hard with a D-pad - the only hard part is that fucking hump just before the last corner (or at the start of it in reverse) that you need a very good line on to have room to turn once you hit it. Tapping the dpad is only for straightening out - you should turn on the extreme oval with a solid button press. You just need to practice how long you need to hold for. Start wide and finish tight.

So I've been hacking Super Monaco GP on Gen\MD because I'm bored.

I have found, in RAM... Current Team address, transmission type address, car durability (and maximum) and pit repair rate addresses, a strange top speed-related address, what appears to be a set of car performance-related addresses, Engine RPM addresses, and a track ID address.

You cannot drive the red\white car from Arcade Mode in World Championship. However, it loads the pit values of team MaDonna, has the handling of a Class C car and has the top speed of a Class D car. Yes, the arcade mode tracks do function in Simulation Mode, and have pit lane functionality in World Championship mode.

The game simulates RPM pretty faithfully to the gauge shown in-game. Max RPM is 15k, but the game will accelerate you to the appropriate speed if you set the engine RPM to, say, 655350 RPM.

What is this, me? Gran Turismo?

At any rate, all of the teams in World Championship have unique pit values to one another in car durability and pit crew repair rates.
Also a bit of incidental lore, too. This team has a repair rate of 1 in all fields, worse than even the lowest Class D team, Zeroforce. Their car also has relatively high durability stats. Their introduction quote talking about "Security money" means that this team is probably operating as a criminal front.

Hey anons... recommend me a racing/driving game with free roaming.
Will play on emulator (up to PS1, plus DreamCast and PSP) or Wii (GC, Wii). PC not powerful enought for PS2 and Xbox emulators.
Currently playing Test Drive Unlimited (PSP), but scenery feels too empty and car selection is not particularly appealing.
Maybe something from NFS series? But same titles seems to be completely different games depending on the platform; it's very confusing.

I think virtually every team in the game is a reference to a real-world team and their car from the F1 1991 (and maybe 1992) season.

Also, starting on Linden had me immediately challenged by Senn--I mean Ceara.

Yeah, I think there's a lot of Sleve McDichaels happening here. Here's compilation of every team's car, normal driver, and what little information the game does provide.

Dunno who in their right mind would think "Misfire" was an appropriate name for a racing engine.

Linden is believed to be based on Ligier, which at the time was effectively French national F1 team with support from their government, including their their state-owned cigarette company (SEITA/Gitanes) and lottery company (Loto).
Speaking of criminal front, you may want to look up the story of the John Pauls and Randy Lanier - 80s IMSA had lots of drug smuggling involved because of them.

Can anyone let me know how big the dead zone is on a NeGcon? Mine allows me to move it until there's 12.5mm of distance between the halves (measuring between the seams) before it registers any input.

This feels way too big, especially when Ridge Racer gives me the option to set the dead zone to 0 or 3mm. I'm guessing it's because I'm using a cheap USB adapter? Are there any out there that have no deadzone?

So I took another spread of drivers from the sequel to Super Monaco GP, Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II. Re-tuned, feels better to play, and of course has Senna voicing stuff.

Now with power graphs that make even less sense!

I haven't done as much research into this game, which is why the generic player driver is filling in for the Serga team.

That might be a fun idea: Figure out who the driver pictures are based on.

I'm betting that some are altered photos of real drivers, some are Sega staff, maybe some are just crew members, probably an actor or two in there somewhere.
After all, this is a company that used a frame from Blue Thunder for the title screen of Thunder Blade.

Though as well, Losel's color scheme in Monaco GP 2 basically tells all as to why MaDonna (with Senna driving no less) is Yellow\Red instead of White\Red. White\Red would put it dangerously close in appearance to THIS car.

All of them are based on the Marlboro car and then recolored, and Sega must've had trouble for it because a later revision of Super Monaco GP for arcade removed a lot of the real (and similar fake) logos.

Even though they removed the red off of this car and blanked out the logo in the back, you can still make out the Marlboro logo on the nose.

Sega didn't have a FIA/FOCA license at the time either and ironically Losel's colors in SMGP2 is basically Marlboro Menthol colors. They never ran that, but they ran a yellow/white car in 1986 to promote Marlboro Lights.
>>8248236
>Although the initial release to distributors of the arcade version had been very popular, Super Monaco GP was the subject of a lawsuit by Philip Morris over its Marlboro brand of cigarettes being parodied in the game as "Malbobo". It had not been the only brand to be parodied, as brands such as Ford were parodied as "Fodo", Mobil 1 as "Modil 2", and Canon as "Conan". However, the in-game appearances of "Malbobo" had led to a complaint to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission by a professor from the Medical College of Georgia that Super Monaco GP was advertising cigarettes to children, the majority of players of arcade games.
>Philip Morris contacted Sega over the issue in November 1989, and Sega agreed to release a conversion kit removing the advertising in March 1990; the offending parody (as well as parody of Foster's called "Hoster's") were replaced with logos for Flicky, an older Sega arcade game. Sega argued the parodies were the attempts of game developers to create a realistic environment.
>With arcade units still featuring the parody after this release, Philip Morris sued Sega in February 1991. The tobacco company had also sued Namco over Marlboro imagery in its 1987 game Final Lap. The tobacco company wanted a total recall of the game as well as financial compensation and all advertising material destroyed, but settled with Sega in May 1992.
>As a condition of the settlement, Sega ran advertisements in arcade publications RePlay and Play Meter to offer to replace the chips in the game with new ones without advertising and pay each arcade operator $200 for returning the original chips.
