I remember I almost got to the end of Shining Force Neo, but I couldn’t beat the grinding dungeons needed to unlock the final boss or something.

It was cheap and I thought it would be a good gateway game into the series. I picked up Shining Force 1 for the Genesis recently, and I’ll play it after I finish the mountain of unfinished games I’ve got backed up.

The best gateway is SFII
It has very little, if any connection to 1 and they had to make a 2 part Game Gear game to link them out of shit they made up later.

It's much improved/polished and what I consider a "finished" SF I.

Shining Force 1 is pretty short and sweet I'd recommend bumping it up your backlog.

Post Sonic Software Planning/Camelot Shining isn't even the same series. I like Neverland but even their Shining games are dogshit.
