How come no one accepts how janky Super Turbo is and just move on from the game?

Muh arcade standard and people not wanting to move away from it.
That said, the alternatives are not too hot.

>HSF2
Broken unless you enforce strict bans on certain characters. Bad glitch makes Claw useless.
>HD Remix
Not very accessible at the moment, but did have a pretty good following for a time. Eventually Sirlin's changes to the gameplay wore thin and people wanted to go back to original ST that was less gimmicky.
>Ultra SF2
Not currently playable with roll-back on the PC platform. Still basically the same game and the graphics look kind of cheap and generic. Evil Ryu and Violent Ken are stupid.
>New Legacy
Hack that is getting some traction on Fightcade. But uses the base ST engine and can feel just as "jank" at times.

What I want is a decompilation of ST and source port to PC. And eventually a character editor. A man can dream...

>> No.8207902

Isn't there a tourney hack that let's you pick between the different characters version s (HF, dash, turbo, super). I vaguely remember seeing it played at an Evo like 10 years ago

That's Hyper SFII, it's official, and the characters aren't accurate compared to how they played originally.

There's also frame skipping that can change the properties of a move. That's how the "turbo" is achieved.

>> No.8208610

>>8208593
More information:

At every speed the game processes every frame. It will never skip over a frame that was going to hit, for example.
But visually you may not see that frame. The game may skip over the start-up frame of an attack, for example. So in theory you could get hit by something that has a 1-frame start-up and hits on the 2nd frame without ever seeing the start-up animation.

>> No.8208615

I honestly can't stand the aesthetics shift in Super. WW-CE-TurboHF were peak SFII style, Super just felt too weird and bright.

>> No.8208638

>>8208615
>Super just felt too weird and bright
There's something missing when you display the raw pixels of CPS2 games, especially Super and ST. I think there's something off about the expected gamma curve. Even if you play the game on a PC CRT with no correction it will look "wrong".

But the home ports of ST on PlayStation 1 and Dreamcast will look right on a CRT tv.
And if you apply some shaders in Retroarch to use a gamma of 2.5 the game starts to look right again.

I think maybe CPS2 Super was designed to be displayed on some particular arcade CRT to look right.

Violent Ken can break the game almost as badly as Akuma thanks to the Rasetsukyaku. In a game where mobility is a privilege he has as much as you can eat.

It’s the closest people can come to an official romhack. It’s a jankfest and that’s what’s fun about it. It’s like that bootleg version of SF2 where you can do chain sonic booms across the screen and switch characters mid fight

Console players.
HF (aka turbo) is the definitive SNES fighter. It is better than Super SF on SNES which is slower in comparison. Super Turbo was only released on 3DO

>> No.8210043

>>8209839
bah
jank basically just describes a game that's off kilter and does strange things, while soulless is mostly just someone saying "I don't like this", often with the implication that it's sterile and boring

If you want specific examples, Super Turbo has an awful lot randomness EVERYWHERE, has moves with absurd properties, throw teching still has you taking damage, the old characters are still playable so many of the dumber properties from original SSF2 are still in play and even the loss of new Super Turbo mechanics doesn't hurt many of them that badly (to be fair, they're hidden behind a code, but afaik, they've always been allowed in competition), stun is BRUTAL and can happen ridiculously fast, etc.
Sure, you can probably say many of these were things that happened because SF2 was one of the earliest entries in the genre as it's known today, but people still got pissed at a lot of this shit way back when, and this is four revisions after World Warrior..

oh yeah, and the weird frameskip stuff, fucking hell

>>8209858
that's fair
still usually end up playing in CE mode on console

>> No.8210793

jank means something though
it's when the game is wildly inconsistent or glitchy
like if a combo sometimes kills and sometimes doesn't, or the stun duration changes, or sometimes a combo just doesn't work even when input correctly
super turbo has all of that

>> No.8210798

>>8210786
Also there is the Amiga CD32 "port" which I think is more of a very bad facsimile that was made without access to the source code.
