Unfortunatley it's a mixed bag. He just went through and turned on the VDP1 50/50 blending flag on everything and it's resulted in a lot of bugs and errors because the effect doesn't work correctly with palettes graphics.

>>8203516
No. The slowdown is due to bad programming and doing a ton of useless crap during Vblank. The guy doing the English Patch plans to take a stab at fixing it. The stretched aspect ratio can't really be fixed without rebuilding the game from scratch.

>> No.8203651

I genuinely don't see the point of spending so much time and effort trying to fix an absolute dogshit port when it will never be as good as the PSX version. The extra content is hardly worth it.

>> No.8203763

>what is the extra content even? Playing as Maria like in Rondo?
A couple new areas, new bosses and enemies, new items like Eric Lecarde's spear from the Sega Genesis game and the dash boots and the rainbow cloak, new music, new more fitting sprite for Richter when you play as him (he's actually wearing the cloak as depicted in his artwork).

>> No.8203771 [DELETED]

>>8203651
>>8203763
why are playstation fans so sensible?
The extra stuff is playable Maria, new areas and enemies/bosses (not a lot, but it's more content regardless), new music tracks, new items, and the 6 face buttons on the Saturn allow for more QoL item usage.
I'd actually say the Ps1 version is the least preferred version, especially the western version which lacks content that original japanese release had.
I still think PSP is the definitive version due to having the option of japanese language + eng subs, the restored content from the original JP release, and playable Maria, but this new Saturn fix might make the Saturn version the actual definitive now.

Complete mixed bag. It has some features that bafflingly were not re-used for the PSP vesion including:

>sprint shoes
>third hand for consumable items

But it is also a complete programming mess, with hideous new sprites, so it's a mixed bag.

One of the reasons is that Saturn was disrespected for a long time and things like this can make perform like it is capable of. Its why people make homebrew for old consoles, to prove what was possible on the hardware that wasn't taken advantage of at the time.

Interesting. I've beaten the game with two "hard modes" myself. First is a cheat-code based save that gives you Level 99 with Luck mode stats and no luck. Then the other formal "hard mode" romhack. So overall the game was not that hard with either. I could late-game get so much broken equipment, like if you equip two of the necklaces that the cave trolls drop nothing can even think about damaging you. And special attacks use a different formula than attack, so you still ended up doing like 90+ for attacks while you could do much less with normal attacks. So late game I was still just shredding through the place.

That they've likely beaten endlessly by now. The menu isn't complex to navigate and they can see a graphic of the item plus the stats when you're equipping it so there's no mystery.

Back in 2002 i beat the japanese version of SOTN on PS1 because the chink who sold me pirated games was too cheap to download the american version and burn a couple copies of it, and i had zero issues because it's a fucking exploration platformer and the menu displays with numbers which weapon/armor is superior.

This patch is built upon the chinese patch and includes access to the 4MB expansion pack. But, if I remember right the chinese patch merely makes the extra RAM available to the game, it doesn't program the game to actually use it. That would require much more significant changes to the game's code.

Longcoat is clearly a sprite made by the b-team and it doesn't fit like the rest of their sprites. There was probably some note about how the A-team wanted to do that but never had a chance. The B-team saturn content is largely doing what they didn't have time for, but they're nowhere near as good as the main team so it all looks half-assed.
