That's a shit top 60 for the system. Out of that list, I've played a vast majority of them. However, I have only (from what I can see) beaten 8. My favourite is likely Dynamite Headdy. Probably half of the games listed (if not more) aren't that great (e.g. Vectorman, Moonwalker, Kid Chameleon, E-Swat and Earthworm Jim are average at best). Your lack of SOR is disturbing. Also, you are missing Landstalker and Ghouls 'n' Ghosts.

PC Engine is the complete game, but the MD version has better control and some redrawn sprites. V3 should have ended up on Sega CD with the PCE music and extra levels, along with MD's 3 action buttons and improved sprite detail/multi-scrolling

SNES doesn’t even have a version of this game though; it has a completely different aladdin tie-in game which is way more generic and kiddie. shouldn’t have even acknowledged it.

I think Earthworm Jim 2 is pretty identical for both the SNES and Genesis/ Mega Drive versions. They are much closer in content, in comparison to EWJ1. Both games, have all the same stages. The SNES game does have a higher colour pallet and additional background details and such. The Genesis/ Mega Drive game, is higher resolution. Some staged like the Peter Puppy ones are a little easier because of the slightly higher resolution, since you can see further. The Salamander Stage on the Genesis/ Mega Drive has a neat hardware effect that causes the stage to 'shake', not seen in other versions. The SNES game does have weapon swapping, but this was also the case for EWJ1 as well. I never really found the weapon swapping to affect the game much. Though, in some cases getting weapons like the bubble gun can be a hazard in the Genesis/ Mega Drive game, as you can't swap to another weapon.;

Not that anon, but the whole "hardcore" and "casual" buzzwords are not retro-related, nobody used these words in terms of video games back then, it was only during the 2000s that internet media outlets started using terms such as "casual" and "hardcore", same thing with the term "gamer". Sure, you can probably nitpick a handful of articles from before the year 2000 that use the term "hardcore" or "gamer" in some instance that may or may not be related to the way these words are used today, but in general those weren't part of the general lexicon at all.

It's more than just better music. A large chunk of the audio samples were cut out of the SNES game too. Genesis/ Mega Drive have has a lot more voices and sound effects. I don't think the SNES version is bad. I like it. But the Sega Genesis version is the definitive one for me. But with Jim 2, I prefer the SNES port just a little more. Even though the Genesis/ Mega Drive version is fine, if you don't mind the lack of weapon swapping.

really should sit down and try and finish Chelnov, I've played that game a bunch and never got to the end; same with Ranger-X
I'm bad at Contra HC and Alien Soldier, it'll be ages before I finish them
a lot of this list, I just don't care enough to finish (I've played a bunch of Mystic Defender, but like, it's eh)
tried E-Swat on Genesis, that game pisses me off

I'd kill for a leaner, meaner directors cut version of the game. I think damn near every stage is really, really padded out. It's mechanically quite decent, the soundtrack is wicked (but it would be nice if Jesper Kyd ever noticed that the Genesis also had three square wave channels lmao, I'm pretty sure the PSG gets no use in the soundtrack), and it's a real contender for the most stylish game on the machine, but holy shit, the stage design drags onnnnn.
also, the bosses feel like they have too much health by far

and god, that shoot-em-up stage is actually fifteen minutes long, I have no idea why they did that
the game is over an hour long but it feels like it needed to be like 20 minutes shorter

>>8210725
Good points. Yeah a director's cut would be nice . One of the reasons I think the normal levels feel so long is the level design is too often "go right while enemies repeatedly spawn and run at you." I don't mind it as much in Alien Soldier where the levels are just a way to break up the bosses and let the player refill their health but Alien Soldier's levels are also much shorter and tighter.

The bossfights, music, visuals, and batkicks are excellent though.
