Was the PlayStation the true successor to the Super Nintendo?

>> No.8195281

Did it kill the N64 do you mean? Yes.

>> No.8195301

There wasn't a single good controller in existence until the Xbox came along.

>> No.8195303

Not nearly as good sidescrollers. Best 5th gen sidescroller was ironically on N64 (Goemon's Great Adventure) and then saturn had all the great 2D stuff.
PS1 can only be considered a successor to sfc partially, mostly for the rpgs. I always saw it more as a successor to the 3do, considering mgs was going to be originally on it and all

I wish we lived in the world where 3do got mgs

It literally was, just look up it's history.
Nintendo was working with sony to make a CD console but jumped ship on the project because reasons, so sony decided to make lemoneggs.

The SNES was partially designed by Kutaragi, so yes.

N64 was the successor to the Genesis.

ps1 controller is knockoff snes controller because nintendo was partnered with sony to make console. but nintendo got so mad that deal went south that ever since they couldnt make normal controllers anymore because snes and ps1 controllers reminds them of shame. and shame and honor too important in japanese culture

not the best X game and not better than GGA overall in terms of platforming.
Also, X4 was better on Saturn.

What was different on Saturn?

>> No.8195991

Don't listen to anon. It both looked and played worse on Saturn, as did SotN. Segafags always say stuff like this hoping no one has actually played both versions to call them out on their bullshit.

upvote and reposted. Did you know also that Donkey Kong is a remake of Super Mario 2: Donkey Panic for NES?

Outed yourself as never having played GGA, nice. X4 is not even close to being the best game in its series, much less the best 5th gen platformer.

More background effects, some music tracks are longer and loop properly (unlike PS1 which stops and re-loads the music).
The only advantage PS1 has is transparency, but Saturn's dithering works if you are using a CRT; which you should to play retro games anyway.

>> No.8196585

>>8196579
CRT has nothing to do with it, it's composite which smooths the dithering over.

Doesn't matter. Sidescrollers were far too lacking on the N64 as were RPGs.

>> No.8196605

>>8196591
Sidescrollers were lacking in all 3 systems, to be honest.
PS1 only has a handful but nothing outstanding like all the many great stuff Mega Drive or SNES have. N64 has too little, but at least it has a top tier one, probably the best one of the generation. Saturn has some really good stuff too, namely Taromaru and the better versions of the Rockman games, but ultimately, for being a 2D powerhouse, you'd think there would be more. Shinobi on Saturn is OK but too weird. Astal looks great but gameplay-wise is just OK. 5th gen in general was strange for sidescrolling games. The most famous 2D sidescroller of the era, SOTN, can hardly be considered a real platformer as it has more in common with RPGs and exploration games.
tl;dr I don't think there's a real successor to the SNES or even the MD, that era of video games wasn't replicated. Maybe the GBA? but that was more about "SNES, but portable".

>Was the PlayStation the true successor to the Super Nintendo?
fuck no. not even closely related to it.
>>8195303
>Not nearly as good sidescrollers
that's because sony recommended to developers to use only 3d modes. developers were discouraged by sony for years to do anything in 2D.

>Maybe the GBA
yep. that was the closest to a real successor but with worse audio. was a great system. pretty easy to program for as well, just like the snes was.

Both, 3DO and the PlayStation, could be seen as successors to the MSX, since Matsushita and Sony both used to make their own MSX machines, which is why the development codename of the PlayStation was PSX. You can even see a Sony HiTBiT machine at the end of Metal Gear Solid V.

never programmer for either machine before, have you? i have. if you can program a c64 you can program both those things. what are you? some kind of computer illiterate spastic?

>> No.8196745

>>8196731
SNES was not easy to program for, particularly not compared to contemporaries like the Mega Drive. Shitty slow CPU and bank switching galore.
GBA certainly was though, I've actually made a couple homebrews for it. It's super accessible.
