What's better out of Megaton and 20th Anniversary?

>> No.8194958 [DELETED]

>>8194852
Some people have had technical problems with 20th Anniversary, but it has a new extra episode and dev commentary. Megaton is no longer sold, but you can get the Atomic edition on Zoom Platform. It has all the same content as the Megaton edition, which was the base game plus a few old expansion packs. No matter what version you own, even the Megaton edition, you're missing out on something. I doubt World Tour works with mods, so I recommend the Atomic edition.

>What's better out of Megaton and 20th Anniversary?

megaton was based on Polymost. if I am not mistaken. In many ways it is better, because it keeps the original >grp system in place, for easy mossing and editing. It's really easy to install Megaton and load the content using EDuke32 if you want to. 20th Anniversary no longer uses the .grp files. It can't be modded easily like the other ports. It does have a nice selection of new levels. But Megaton Edition came with all expansion packs and had the option to play the original DOS game using dosbox from the loader.

really, you're not missing anything by going with the Megaton Edition. Megaton is just another source port of Duke Nukem 3D. The content it comes packaged with are the standard .GRP files. Which are the same .GRP files packaged with Atomic Edition. 20th Anniversary really does remove the original .GRP filing system. So you can't just grab the 20th anniversary levels and throw them intto eDuke32.

With Megaton you're missing the new episode and dev commentary. With 20th Anniversary you're missing the expansions. There's no version that has both.

Oh. I misinterpreted what you were saying. yes, it doesn't have the 20th Anniversary content. What I meant was, MegaTon Edition has all of the .GRP files (Build's version of .WAD files) untouched from the DOS Atomic Edition + expansion packs.

>Why the fuck are there so many versions of this fucking game.

Current 3D Realms (not the Scott Miller owned one) released Megaton Edition on Steam and GOG. It basically was a retail source port, not Eduke32. I do not know the details, but gearbox, who owns the rights to Duke Nukem, removed megaton and all over legacy Duke Nukem games, and replaced it with their own port called Duke Nukem 20th Anniversary. The biggest issue with Duke Nukem 20th Anniversary is that it is not easily to like the OG DOS Duke Nukem3D, or any of the source ports. They made the game incompatible, so the new episode wouldn't be easy to pirate and load on EDuke32 or even the <egaton Edition.

I guess if you wanted to be generous, you could argue that Megaton was for people on Steam that just wanted workship support and didn't want to go through the "hassle" that was grabbing the GOG version + a sourceport, though it did also come with the expansion packs as a bonus and went on sale often.
20th Anniversary though I still don't get the logic of. The "True 3D" mode looks nice, and the 5th episode was great, but it felt like they didn't make the most out of it by adding a 6th episode as an update, or even just making a new game entirely out of new episodes while using Duke 3D as a base. The level commentary is mostly contained to the first and 5th episodes IIRC, I guess it was just down to Randy wanting an excuse for people to buy it on PS4/Xbone/Switch

I will genuinely never forgive Randy for that. Let the people decide what happens to 2001 DNF or how it was, its not like it matters since Gearbox has done fuck all with the IP besides yet another re-release of Duke 3D and a shitty skin/waste of JSJ's time by including him in a Bulletstorm re-release.
I can only hope that by THQ-Nordic's parent company acquiring them, there's gonna be a shakeup at Gearbox.

Also, Megaton has/ had a native Linux version too on Steam. When Megaton was originally released. It was OK, but still beat out by Eduke32. But the MegaTon devs did update it quite frequently, and it became a really good port before it was removed. If you have it on Steam, you can still enable the betas too, which did try to fix some things.

Oh, sorry. I was mistaken. GOG had Atomic, the expansions (I think?), Duke Nukem 1, Duke Nukem 2, Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, balls of Steel (with Duke Nukem table) , which were all removed by GearBox.

Just to waste my own time? And, I knew it was possible. But, it is still not as easy to mod as the standard Duke 3D. It's not like they changed the actual engine. reorganised the file system.

Atomic on Rednukem.

>> No.8199668

Megaton is pretty much still the best official collection of Duke 3D and it's expansions.
Though these days you can also run it through something like Raze or EDuke32.
World Tour's only good bit is the new map set, which can be played in other engines anyway.

I am sure this has been said a million times, but just download EDuke32 and use Atomic Edition Edition or Megaton Edition. I personally ripped my files from Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition CD and played this way, but the Internet Archive is your friend. It's not like the original devs are getting any money for the games anymore. If you want, donate through their EDuke32 page. The source port is getting updates weekly and people who worked on the original game, made it. You should also try out some of the expansions. Life's and Beach and Duke it out in D.C. are really good. I would suggest skipping all the rest because their quality is pretty subpar

All you really need is the Atomic.GRP (or Duke3D.GRP) file. The Megaton Edition has them all located in its file directories, and you can grab and drop them into any of the source ports, or original executable s.

I think everyone else besides Randy (who actually only did a few levels on Atomic Edition, if I remember correctly) wouldn't care. It's a 25 year old game and there are still to this day, bitter court battles over the IP

>I think

You "know" things and "think" things. You're just making up excuses out of your ass to justify piracy.

Whether or not devs get money directly from sales (=royalties) depend on their contract, and you can't know this without looking at each dev's contract individually. This is true whether the game is old or is a new. If someone has royalties and the game is bought by another company down the line, the contract carries over and the dev would still get royalties. Now on top of this, these original devs mentionned above were directly involved in making new content for the re-release so they'd get something for that too.

All of this is besides the point anyway because many devs don't care about royalties and just want a stable pay while working on the game: for many one sure thing you get now is better then a "maybe you'll get something later". Does this mean you shouldn't buy the game, even when it's new, because "the devs aren't getting anything from the sales?"
