Been playing this as well. Absolutely loving it and getting close(I think) to beating it. This has to be the best Genesis ost ever made. Are you asking for "good games for a beginner" or "best of the best"?

For the former, I'd suggest M.U.S.H.A. Aleste, Darius Gaiden, or Touhou's 7, 8, or 10. Those are the three I started out with. Of them, Darius is probably the toughest, but none of them off too much complexity for someone just starting out, and I still heavily enjoy them after playing them off and on for years.

For the latter, there's Battle Garegga, Ketsui and Dragon Blaze. Garegga's music is great, the scoring is very deep by design, and the rank system will keep you on your toes every second. Ketsui offers a scoring system that, while obtuse, let's you go about your own path and still get decent scores, as well as two different 2nd loops each with their own scoring mechanics and difficulty. Dragon Blaze is just a culmination of all things Psikyo; challenging first loop, punishing second loop, and the randomized stages keep the game feeling fresh.

Ah, easy, hard whatever, I'm just after high quality games I can enjoy. I have actually been playing a little Dragon Blaze. It is certainly above my skill level but I like the theme and the polished feel. I even kinda like the enemy weak-point mechanic, it's a specific challenge.
The only shmups I am decent at are Area 88 on the snes and Aero Fighters 2. I'm just exploring the genre a bit these days.

You only like that one because it's the most casual-friendly. Microscopic hitboxes, increased shot fire frequency so hitting things is easier, no checkpoints, easy stages with dreadful pacing until the game starts to finally pick up on the second to last stage, OP options that let you shoot in any direction or freeze them in place, it's no wonder V is the most overrated Gradius.

Eh, it's okay. Far too easy though and none of the ships really have that sweet spot where they balance the game properly. They are mostly too slow, the shots too wide, the main one has a spread shot that's too wide and does too little damage and a focus shot that is so powerful that it trivialises bosses. And there's not much consistency between what shot types are fired by which enemy class and which will scrub on death and such. It's not the worst, but it's a collection of poorly understood mechanics put into a game by people who clearly weren't really fans of the genre.

never heard that before, do you feel that the SquareSoft and Enix merger was a good thing, or a bad thing?

I am of the opinion that SquareSoft and Enix were better off as separate companies. After the merger it felt (to me) like the quality of their games was drastically worse. Visually they stood out, but I love the story and gameplay in their older games (like CC, FFV, EINHANDER, etc) much more than their newer ones. This isn't to say that every game from Square-Enix is bad. I'm simply of the opinion that they had better games overall while they were separate companies.

Just a reminder to everyone to make sure you're using Retroarch with run-ahead to play your favorite shmups. Retroarch with run-ahead has significantly less input latency than even native hardware.

a SNES game on Retroarch with one frame of run-ahead on a freesync monitor is <10ms button-to-pixel input lag compared to 50ms button-to-pixel input lag of a real SNES on a CRT TV.

do any of you know what all the spells do in cotton reboot? From what I gather the charged form is always the same for each level but gets some kind of bonus, the tap for each spell gets more significant bonuses per level and is generally offensive.

Red: Tap shoots out a dragon not sure how it changes per level. charged lets your fairies do homing attacks. Level increases the damage on dragon shot and extends fairy time. dragon shot is good at making/breaking black crystals

Blue: Tap is a constant beam until level 3 where it's a full screen bomb. Charge is shield that gets more time per level.

Green: Tap is a screen clear bomb not sure how it changes as it levels. not sure what charge does.

Purple: tap drop bomb with insane damage, damage increases per level i'm pretty sure with a full stock of level 3 purple you can get through almost every boss without them doing a full attack. charged blacks all the crystals and brings them to you, unsure of how level changes it.

the biggest thing to remember with magic is that enemies killed with magic refill your Jewel gauge, which allows you to activate Jewel Fever more frequently. Level 1 lightning spells are particularly good for this recharging, but green spells work in a pinch too. Green charges turn popcorns into crystals

To be honest I don't see much of a use the purple crystal's charge turning all crystals black. Unless it was designed as a penalty there is never a case where turning crystals black is worth more than activating Jewel Fever.

I've never been into this genre much but what I like about it is they are very simple to pick up and play and have fun. Also what you said and some have great music such as Thunder Force 4 having the greatest music I mean damn. Playing and beating a ton of these is on my bucket list if I ever get around to it. Also though I am not so sure about those bullet hell ones. Some look alright but most don't seem appealing or are too much for the hardcore fans of the genre the way I see it.

Mushi futari original mode I think
If you have the fundamentals of shmup dodging down and know how to make full use of your bombs then you can definitely clear a lot of stuff in a day. Unavoidably though there will be at least one hard segment that takes hours to learn even in an easy game. The emulator does seems pretty decent though to be fair. I'm getting 95-99% speed on handheld stock 1.0ghz clocks. Which is unheard of for Saturn emulation on even retroarch. Would only get 50-80% speed overclocked typically. I'm gonna fuck around with docked and overclocks when I get home from work.

The .ini files encrypted which may hold values for this custom emulator. So hopefully someone can decrypt that and we can fuck with the emulator settings. Maybe disabling vsync would greatly reduce latency among other things.

you play shmup for 20 minutes, maybe an hour a day. you get better when you sleep since that's when your brain rewires itself to detect bullet pathing faster as well as improve your left hand coordination if you're not left handed. this is assuming you're consciously trying to get better and taking note of what's making you eat shit. your first 1cc will probably take the longest, especially if it's a hard game. as you play more you'll get to the point where you can reasonably 1cc games anywhere between an afternoon and two weeks. a shmup is not a brainless activity you do to blow through hours like mmos or most single player games, it's an exercise you do for fun.

If you're already left handed you're going to have an advantage since incredibly precise, small movements will be easier to get used to.

the dev's intentions or main-intended-mechanic are irrelevant in this comparison because both the speedrunner and pointrunner are functionally engaging in the same sort of play: static, routed, repetitive, optimization chase that requires hundreds of resets while trying to beat an old PB or climb a leaderboard. And both are probably doing things the devs never foresaw or intended either.

> fighting games are all about external justification, you fight against some rando,
sure you might fight a rando or get a dropped connection, but I'm talking about well-matched
sets which happen daily, while the pointrunner or speedrunner will only experience the equivalent once every few months or years, in between hundreds of trash runs and resets hoping for that new happy PB

>t. instant gratification retard that can't work on actual long-term personal goals, the journey is the whole point you adhd cunt.
not instant gratification, rather it's more efficient and pure gratification because it's not done for externals like some future score or faster time, or a leaderboard position to show off, but its done for the thing itself.

90% of the difficult of any game just comes from time needed and motivation. If you just practice everything absolute the absolute hardest of shmups, you can get 1CCs in like 20-60 hours. >you are adhd and need instant gratification
the better you get at fighting games the more consistent and efficient the gratification curve becomes, the opposite is the case for shmups.... like the delayed gratification of Diablo 2 players grinding out loot, eventually it takes longer and longer for them to find a good & exciting drop.

>those "trash runs" are the main source that allow you improve you a player
majority of trash runs end up being boring, forgettable resets, only a small small minority are completed to the end because they had some PB potential and those get fewer and further apart.

>you are literally validating yourself against others instead of putting your own goals against the game.

>The headquarters were dead silent. The Donpachi squadron waited anxiously.
>"However nothing, haha! You will hear nothing short of praise from my lips! You performed tremendously. Well done."
>"Come forward to accept your reward!" The squad cheered as their champion pilot of the Biaxe streched his legs to claim their prize, his face beaming, his chin held high and proud.
>"DIE, MAGGOTS!" Longhener paralyzed him stiff as a board, just as the pilot stood before him.
>"FAREWELL!" Longhener cried again, locking every door in the building.

Cave shmups were pushed hardest and most impressively during the first 6-12 months of their release at arcades. What's happening now is a couple miserable necrophiliacs milking the dead corpse of some Cave shmup hoping for that one lucky NMNB clutch RNG run, or hoping to trigger a janky bug on time.

What is being <pushed> now for Cave is westies collecting 1ccs of normal and novice modes, that's where most of the action and strat sharing is taking place.

and the only ones worth scoring at the time wouldve been dodonpachi, daioujou or ketsui.

if you actually read the cave interviews at shmuplations, you could easily tell that most of the games during that era were made on a retarded deadline sometimes by just 1 programmer (futari BL was made in a month)
meanwhile most of the people working on sdoj weren't smart enough to realize that a scoring system that revolves around cancels can't have bullet cancelling enemies in only 2 stages out of 5 (at least we hired big name VAs for most of the budget)

>>8214826
even the biggest Cave shill working at Cave wouldn't pretend their past products are alive and competitive anymore lmao
fuck cave, glad it's dead, any half decent doujin team or even 1 person can make a better game when they're not limited by retarded underpowered hardware where the game barely fits in the memory and ridiculous deadlines and when the devs actually play the games themselves, just look at battle traverse or crimzon clover where it's done by people who actually know what a good shmup should be, not by shinobu "sdoj is too hard" yagawa
the only thing they really had going for them towards the end was the visual design and incredible music
even blue revolver was a more coherent shmup than most of cave's late output and it was made in some ez2use 2d game framework as their first shmup ever

scoring is different because it's not reduced to just visual move & dodge routing like survival (unless the scoring is total trash).

In something good like Garegga, Ketsui, Espgaluda 2, Dimahoo, there are big factors going on behind the scenes you won't understand even after watching the replay a hundred times.

And #2 scoring doesn't have a clear end point to learn, you can always improve on it while a 1cc is just a 1cc, a no-miss is a no-miss and that's the end of that move 'n shoot grind.

it's the same memorization shit, scoring just means you have to memorize more things, if anything replays are more useful for scoring than for survival because you'll understand all the hidden scoring shit faster, survival is less demanding to route for yourself and can be more enjoyable if you don't want something super strict.
>And #2 scoring doesn't have a clear end point to learn
it has if you have a goal, same as survival goals, very few peopple (wr players etc) indefinitely push the games forever.

how is that so? you are allowed to complain about certain parts of the game even if you like generally playing them and need to know a few bits to win.
In most games, grinding combos is also gets you the least ability / time spent, and learning a few B&B combos is better than going through the challenge mode ones; learning properties of moves and general spacing will get you a lot further and faster.
Playing against other players also gets you much further than grinding out combos in training mode. The combos are just to push you a little further against an otherwise equal opponent.

Why is 1944 not as well liked as the Capcom-developed ones or the Strikers trilogy?

>> No.8228101

Just spent like 30 minutes trying to figure this shit out and finally found what the issue was.

For anyone who plays shmups in RetroArch (or honestly just uses RetroArch in general), set Integer Scaling ON, Set Allow Core to Rotate OFF (so cores cannot change rotation), and set aspect ratio to PAR 1:1 (automatically adjusts to the perfect aspect ratio).

What this does is allows you to use the video rotation setting in RetroArch to use TATE mode on a standard non-rotated screen at a pixel perfect size and aspect ratio while overriding any core that sometimes won't let you do this. So turn TATE mode on in-game, adjust screen rotation appropriately, PAR 1:1 will automatically adjust the aspect ratio for you, and then just save that as a game override so the rotation only saves for that game.

>> No.8229142

>>8228101

>> No.8229154

I hate the bosses in Esprade way too much hp makes the fights boring, specially last boss blah

>> No.8229361

>>8229142
I don't know what you mean by default, but a lot of games don't have an option to show the full screenspace at full resolution unless you select TATE mode. They're either squished, much lower res, or just cut off part of the screen.

Not allowing cores to rotate is needed for certain cores that override it and lock you only to 180°, and 1:1 PAR and integer scaling then just assures that you have pixel perfect resolution and aspect ratio after rotating the video (not screen) through retroarch settings

I've been playing Capcom Arcade Stadium because I wanted to get a sorta curated walk through some classics, both for historical understanding and to build some shmup fundamentals. My goal is to 1CC each, or in the case of something infinite like Vulgus, complete at least one loop. I'm on 1942 now and breezing through it using the rewind just so I can see to the end of the game before I start working toward completion when I started to realize that this game is super long. So I looked up a video, and a full completion is a fucking hour. I dunno if I have if I have it in me to try working towards getting an hour of perfect play. We'll see, I guess.
