I'm more interested in where you started out and where you ended up. What choices did you make? What did you play? What did your friends have? What was skipped?

The first ever console I played was a rare Ingersoll XK-410-C. It would have been one of the plethora of the first home gaming consoles featuring the game "Pong".

My friend bought the nes and I hung out at his house all the time so even though I never owned one I played it all the time.
Of course the Super Mario Bros series of games were the main attraction

My first games were Malcom (sic) Mortar and Springster on the piece of shit poorfag computer Tandy Coco. Shortly afterwards got a Sega Genesis for Xmas with Sonic 1 packin and also my dad eventually got bored of trying to program the pos Tandy and bought a Quadra 630 Macintosh where I played lots of kino games. Also had brick game boy and n64, missed out on Snes and PlayStation.

I missed the ZX spectrum.
It wasn't very popular and I never heard about them until much later.
Although some dorky nerdy kids did have a Sinclair ZX81 home computer (including my older brother!). I wonder were they related?

My next console was the Super Nintendo.
Me and my buddies spent countless hours smoking weed and playing SNES.
I mastered all the moves of every playable character in Street Fighter II. My other favorite games were Contra III The Alien Wars, Super Mario, F-zero and Super Mario Kart

Next one I played was my friends Sega Mega Drive.
I must admit I was more of a SNES dude then. But I gave him a few pity plays now and then.
But I did enjoy the first few games of the Sonic series and really liked Kid Chameleon

Nintendork for NES + SNES who jumped shipped to Sony because of Capcom and Squaresoft. But I always ended up buying Nintendo consoles once they got cheap.

Obviously I don't have a console newer than the Wii.

Started with an Intellivison in '84 or so. Had a friend in the neighborhood who had a 2600, so we had so e good variety. I have fond memories of the Intellivison and it gave me a love of games.

Around '87 I saw Super Mario Bros. On an NES for the first time at another friend's house and was blown away. He actually looked like a person with eyes, ears, hair, etc. I eventually got an NES as well, and my cousin got an SMS, so again we had a good mix of games and exposure to systems.

Got a SNES and a Game Boy at the end of junior high through high school, and absolutely loved them. Other kids had a Genesis, so got lucky with a mixture of systems and games again.

After high school, I lapsed for about 4 years, then tried to get into 5th gen...but I realized all I wanted was the games of the type I grew up with. Had a few PlayStation games that I liked, but mostly stuck to "retro". Been there ever since and don't feel like I missed anything.

Retroactively moving from NES to 2600 is kind of a strange thing, but I was really young and I just liked games. I also really like the 2600.
I liked the Genesis more than the SNES. Mario on SNES was fun but the Genesis seemed to have a lot more immediate, fast, arcadey games.
I liked the 32X unironically, we got it on clearance with like 6 games, some of which were Kolibri, Star Wars, and Metalhead.
Metal Gear Solid on PS1 made me genuinely rethink what video game experiences could actually offer. There was nothing else like it and I still consider it one of the most important titles ever made. I feel largely the same about the first Silent Hill.
The N64 and Dreamcast are my two favorites on the list. Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Shadows of the Empire, and Goldeneye are some of my favorites.
6th gen was fun at the time but I don't have much fun returning to it now. As graphics kept getting better it seemed like gameplay kept getting more bland. In terms of gameplay I feel like there's a lot less engaging stuff from this generation. A lot of it just doesn't challenge or engage the player. I like Maximo and the THPS games from this gen.
7th gen was a lot worse, in terms of the games that were coming out. AAA games were wholly uninteresting to me at this point, and the 2D artsy indie scene was just as bland. Game design seemed more homogenized than before. I liked Demon's Souls a lot. The Darkness was a fun FPS from this time too, one of the last to not just copy Call of Duty or Bioshock. Speaking of, Bioshock was also OK.
I like the Wii though, games like No More Heroes and Madworld really made it a fun and interesting console for me, and I got to experience fun Gamecube titles I missed like Pikmin and Metroid Prime.
I only bought a PS4 for Bloodborne. I don't really play modern games anymore. The current Playstation store is genuinely pathetic.

born in 96. first game system was a gameboy. me and my siblings got gameboy colors, and then an n64 for one of my early birthdays. gameboy advanced for christmas a little later, then a limited edition SP that had the short lived nintendo slogan “who are you?” in grafiti style letters on the exterior. dog ate that one.
after that, gamecube, ps2, and on into non retro.
a few years back i got into some light collecting and picked up a SNES and a dreamcast, which i play from time to time. i’ve come to find that handheld is generally my preferred method of gaming, and i have a AGS-101 gba and vita for that purpose.
currently playing wario land and having a blast.
