Nearly every popular JRPG is easy enough to be treated as "baby's first JRPG" and appealing enough that you'd probably like it if you like the genre at all. Just play any popular one.

If you actually want an extraordinarily simple one even by the low standards of the genre, then maybe try Dragon Warrior 1 for NES, which was the actual first JRPG for many many people in the English-speaking world (including me, and I loved it), or FInal Fantasy Mystic Quest, which was specifically designed to be an easy entry point to the genre.

Super Mario RPG is a good one. It's a great, fun game. It plays like a regular JRPG, but adds a bit more interactivity by way of timed hits and special move inputs, plus some simple platforming-ish gameplay for the overworld. While most all of the basic RPG elements are there, like inventory management, equipment upgrades, stat progression, and party building (though there aren't very many party members and your active ones are limited to three, with Mario always required), they are handled very lightly, as you can pretty much just buy the newest equipment at the current shop, do nothing but upgrade HP for your stat bonus, and pick pretty much any party and make it through fine. Of course finding better, special equipment given to select party members and making a good party for the situation will make parts easier, it's almost more like a bonus than anything.

FF7 is best enjoyed after you've played lots of 8-bit and 16-bit JRPGs so you can get a feel for how much of a game changer it was. I guess this applies to plenty of older "influential" media like, say, Citizen Kane (not that I've ever seen it).

Fuck off, its the worst game in the series. A beginner who hates RPGs is never going to play any game in the series ever again if they start with this. If you're gonna play DQ just go straight to the best game in the series, V. If you go by order you'll give up by the third dungeon of II and will never experience the kino that is IV-VI.

Dragon Warrior was my first JRPG. I was a young kid at the time. Like I said, I loved it. You are not smart. We are having this conversation on the spoilernet, so OP obviously knows where to find hints if OP wants hints. OP will be fine with this game or nearly any other.

Who cares what a beginner who hates RPGs is going to do? That person isn't in this conversation. OP asked for something simple, not for something that'll convert a hater. You people are retards. Dragon Warrior is extremely simple and, yes, beginner-friendly, in that it mainly requires you to fight battles over and over, which even a young child can do.

Anyway my main recommendation was basically Chrono Trigger or FF7. You dopes are getting triggered by an aside.

And nobody recommended Dragon Warrior 2.

OP is asking for a game that will make them like RPGs. DQ I and II being "simple" does not make them good games. They are too primitive to be enjoyed, nobody just getting into the genre outside of the 80s is going to like it. OP will be massively underwhelmed by the series and the genre if DQ I is the first game he plays.

there's no ''babies first rpg'' because the point is the experience, story, progression system, loot and fun of it all not climbing some ladder of achievements.

like you don't start with Breath of Fire 2 hoping to one day beat Dark Souls...doesn't make sense, does not work like that. JRPGs are a pure genre of fun and experimentation, trial and error, not bragging rights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the story is more interesting when you're conditioned to expect something about the brave knight protecting the legendary crystals from the evil empire
the gameplay is kind of wacky too. materia lets you equip, level and transfer spells around, so the guy with the giant sword could be your party healer or whatever. there's an extra layer of abstraction there. though desu the game isn't hard enough for that to matter.

Another good mario choice is Paper Mario 64. It was my first jrpg as a kid and it really helped me get into the genre and used to the mechanics. The only major difference I can think of is that while Mario gains many partners over time, he's only allowed to have one out (but you can switch around at any time).
