I didn't hate it, and I was exclusively a SEGA/Sonytard back in the day. But I had no problems with it playing with my friend's N64. That said, the Dual Shock design made it instantly obsolete, and it was kinda pointless to put a D-Pad in there when Nintendo heavily discouraged its use.

It's ever so slightly too small for adult hands, and the stick could use a rubber tip and more durable parts. That's all I have to say about it really. I actually really like the particular range of motion the stick has, and I think it's a shame everyone went with Playstation's design after that generation.

I just found out about the 2nd control method in goldeneye where you can use the d-pad to move and the analog stick to look around. Good use of the d-pad as its like using WSAD on PC, very similar to a modern FPS control method all around.

The controller is great, but its got shit durability.
once the joystick start to loosen, it becomes complete ass to use, and looses a lot of the precision that made it good.
Also 2 of my 4 controllers have the issues with the C-buttons being somewhat stuck or tight

The Tony Hawk games take full advantage, the button layout pretty much just copies the playstation controller, which is a very good thing. Using the n64 joystick to play tony hawk gave me aids.

pretty easy to see why. when you open it up, half the analog stick, and ground down bowl/support thing will pour out in tiny little plastic chunks.
then theres the fact that the up/down gear that attaches to the stick will generally get bent out of shape (due to how often you hold up in 3D games)
i reckon ninty did it on purpose in an effort to ship as many controllers as possible

What the fuck do I do to have a decent controller on N64? My sticks are very loose. Do I rebuild the stick? Is there a decent 3rd party option? What option is closest to OEM in terms of performance?

you can get a replacement stick chasis online, or you can open it up and fix it yourself
if the latter, the main issues are the fact that the stick "sinks" into its bowl. this can be ghettorigged relatively easy by adding some plastic around the base of the stick, where it sits on the gears.
the other big issue is that sometimes those gears themselves can become warped. its especially notable on the forward input since its such a common input, and if you open it up, youll see that gear is warped. if you heat it VERY slightly, you can easily bend it back into shape, and this will eliminate a lot of the play

Part of me wonders if the wobbling of the stick on well used one meant that there was a deadzone forming which could make games where you had to barely nudge it forwards to creep around through sections would be near unplayable to janky dead zones especially in the forwards direction.
