I've been playing through these, some for the first time lately and they're fantastic titles.
What's your favourite of the classic RE games? Favourite moments or monsters? Favourite versions?

I think I personally enjoy the very first the most, but RE2 is also brilliant in it's own way. I kind of like the atmosphere and creepy nature of the first more than the 'real-world' feeling of the sequel. Also the sequel in general feels a bit easier.
I think Hunters are my favourite enemy, just because they are so difficult and genuinely fill me with fear when I see them.
I'm also playing through RE3: Nemesis for the first time, it's good but I don't think it feels as good as the first two. The map is very large, but not as intimate. I also don't really enjoy the battles with Nemesis. He's challenging for sure, but it doesn't feel suited to RE, and it just feels like I'm running away and praying I don't get caught so I don't have to mash to not get stun-locked. Still, it's not bad at all.

Either the REmake or CV. I love both a whole lot.

>Favourite moments
This would be quite hard to say, because I feel as though RE games are cumulative experiences. You can't just jump into the middle section of a game and enjoy it; the parts I enjoy the most all relate to the survival horror elements that help each game build tension.

>Favourite character
Claire, Leon and Steve. Steve is a based schizo.

>Favourite monsters
The Licker or Alexia.

CV is the next game for me to play, it was also the first RE game I ever played back when it came out on Dreamcast.
I think it's really cool and seems to have a bad rep that is unwarranted. I liked the atmosphere and the creepy twins an awful lot.
It's also easy to forget that RECV looked incredibly good when it released, it was up there with Shenmue as one of the best looking games I'd ever seen.
I'm kind of annoyed that the game has a glitch with GDEmu though, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it though.

On an unrelated note, I also like reading up on contemporary magazines about the game from the time. I thought it was interesting that 'RE 1.5' was already called by that name and had some mystique around it in 1998. CVG even thought it would get some kind of release.

We nearly had it in the beginning of 1999 or 2000 but that source got shut down by Capcom as soon as they got wind that the latest build they had developed was popping up on screenshots all over the web. Wonder if that still exists somewhere in the world or if it's completely lost to time. Capcom likely lost its code ages ago.

Oh I meant to mention, I think one of the biggest improvements that RE2 made over 1 was the addition of the 'hurt' animations.
Considering I played RE2 and CV before 1, I realised afterwards how much it helps the immersion, not having to check a 'status' screen to see your general health, and also the fact that you get punished for getting hurt by slower movement. It's one of those little touches that really adds so much to the game.

>What's your favourite of the classic RE games?
3.
I believe RE games shine when you replay them and 3 is build with replaying it a bunch of times in mind. I've yet to see all the epilogues, it's really nice to know that there are still stuff to discover when I start new game. However, I've played REbirth version and it's much nicer to play without randomized puzzles.
It's satisfying to shit on Nemesis and I still get spooked by him showing up sometimes when I decide to not hunt him down. The decision system is surprisingly good too, decisions that seem bad are actually desirable for the most part when you get better with the game.
My only real complaint is that OP weapons are not permanent. I don't use them in 2 and 1 anyway, but it's nice to know that they are there.
Overall, I feel like each RE 1-3 deserve to be favoured equally.
>Favourite moments or monsters?
Nemesis, because of the contrast between playing first time and getting good at the game. If that's cheating - probably shark from RE1.
>Favourite versions?
REbirth by far.
Such a shame about remake, hard to put in the words how much I hated it.
>>8164526
>The map is very large
It's really not once you'll get used to it and would know your way around bit better.
RE3 is the worst one through the first playthrough out of 3, that's for sure, I remember thinking that dodge and ammo crafting were out of place, but try to stick to it and replay it.
One advice I can give is that dodging can be triggered by pressing aim in time, or you could be aiming and press shoot - you'll dodge as well.
Good luck.

Oh, the puzzles are random in RE3? That's interesting, I literally just finished it for the first time this afternoon and was debating giving it another run through. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as RE1 and 2, but it was still very good.

I didn't like Nemesis much my first time playing I thought it was more a nuisance than fun, although it was definitely fear inducing. Maybe on a replay it's different? Is the best tactic to just avoid him until you need to fight him at the set sections of the game?

And yeah I didn't mind the ammo by the end of it. It's very satisfying to make magnum ammo, I had lots by the mid section of the game which was really useful for Hunters.

I will also say I was surprised at how little you play as Carlos, considering how important dual characters seemed to be for all the other classic RE games. I thought it would be like a 50/50 split.

My thoughts exactly when I've played it first, I grew to appreciate it much more when went for the better ranks.
>Nemesis
There is more nuance to him than you think. Best tactic is confrontation each time you meet aside from tram and Carlos parts, might seem tough at first, but it's all about getting used to dodge timings, but it depends on how you look on it really.
>Carlos
They've put more into making the decision system, to be fair. I do feel that it's a nice break, but yeah, it's like 10 minutes of playing as him, you do get to shoot the AR however you like though which is kinda neat.

My favorite classic Resident Evil game is the original. I love 2 and 3 but I constantly come back to playing the original game that started the series. My favorite way to play it as the DS version or the PlayStation Director's Cut on a CRT. Since Halloween is coming up, I'm sure I'll play though it once again in honor of the holiday. I also think I am going to try Code Veronica X once again, since I have never fully beat it.

Is it bad I don't mind them? I honestly love taking sip of beer or something while the animation plays. The loading screen doors have really grown on me over the years. It's just funny, since they were such a pain in the ass when the game first came out. Now, it's honestly nostalgic and mood setting.

I do agree, the DS version is underrated for some reason. I assume its because not a lot people have played it and just write it off. The added bonuses are just awesome in the DS port. Quick turning, the knife not taking up innovatory, door skipping, new model and outfits. It's just a wonderful package. I have never played the WI-FI "co-op" online game play though. Seemed a little pointless

Not even Zombie Dogs!? I do agree the zombies are great, but I did like the way they escalate the threat in the first game with Hunters for example.

In fact, one of the excellent things about RE1 and 2 in particular is the clever game design of being in a relatively small area that requires lots of learning the layout and your way around. As you get comfortable, you have to revisit it with a higher threat, like the Hunters in 1 or Mr X in 2. Especially in one it becomes important to know which rooms and routes you can ignore and when it's best to clear the monsters out.

You have a point here. I really like the dark atmosphere but isn't realistic at all although some part of me like it.
>added tons of needless backtracking
backtracking is what essentially RE is.
>the doorknob falling off
iirc it happens in the og too.

it's subjective
>didn't actually improve on the bad areas of the game like the underground
did you really play the same game as me? The underground part is totally way different from the og. You have a totally remodeled aquarium with the sharks, leaving the rest as a nice wink to the og

also, why do you want to burn every corpse? it's kinda boring, useless and tired. Indeed, it's a good premise to add more suspense to the gameplay.

Most of the problems with REmake stem from the fact that it was basically a straight 1:1 remake of RE1 right up until a few months before release. Almost everything that wasn't part of the original game was thrown in at the last minute, which is why it feels poorly thought out and often clashes with the rest of the game.

In order of how I enjoyed them, most to least:

Very enjoyable:
RE2
RE

Enjoyable:
RE3
CV
RE4
RE8
RE0

Meh:
RE6

Not enjoyable:
RE7

Not really resident evil:
RE5

I find the storytelling, the two, slightly different, playthroughs with the added element of mr. x added a lot of entertainment value for RE2. I liked how they balanced the game between somewhat scary with moderate amounts of navigation problems (medallions, keys etc.) and resource management (ammo, healing items, ink ribbons etc.).

The first game will always be special (and first),and I feel it works great as a lead-in to the second game, but every time a new RE game comes out, I always wish they'd take a step toward the RE2 feel of things. Heck, I even liked the characters of the game, which is why I was so disappointed with RE6...

I totally agree, I was waiting a long time for them to go back to the slower paced survival feeling. I felt that RE2 Remake actually was exactly what I was hoping for. I've played 1-4 and I agree. Classic RE is a really good formula and it's no surprise several other games got popular back then (briefly) just by doing the same thing. That said, they were never scary. In fact the only one I've played that's actually scary at times is 7, but while that game's environments and encounter design is quite good, combat feels really clunky and it just slows the whole RE experience down until it feels like something different. Kinda amazing that the classic RE formula lives on though, if nothing else that's pretty cool.
