[ERROR] No.8162485 [Reply] [Original]

According to this data, by January 1st 2001, there were 4,280,000 Dreamcast units sold in the US vs 1,460,000 Playstation 2s. Why just 3 months later, Sega surrendered in a battle they were winning? Was the number of people buying a Dreamcast only to pirate games so high?

You probably don't remember how crazy people were about getting a PS2

People don't seem to remember Sega sold the DC at a loss, not a profit.
>sell consoles at a loss since cost of hardware is more than the price, but want to keep price point to be competitive
>figure will make it back on games
>suddenly people figure out how to easily pirate every game on the console
>even rushing out a revision that removes the mil-CD to prevent the piracy, still millions of consoles out there easily pirated for
>all the devs have gotten wind of this
Just one or the other would have been survivable. Trying to force market share by selling at a loss only to have the other revenue stream threatened so early in the game was just too much. Didn't help they were already starved for cash after the 32X, CD, and Saturn flops.

People really need to stop grouping the sega cd with 32x and saturn

Bernie made sure dreamcast lost money on every unit sold, so customers would then need to buy 8 full priced games for sega to see a positive return solely from royalties and software margin. A daring move some might call fucking retarded. Did it pay off? Well in some ways. Sega has yet to replace the dreamcast as their flagship platform but also haven't produced any software for it for almost 20 years. We'll know if Bernie's plan was a success in the future. Too soon to tell.

Meanwhile between the Dreamcast launch and Jan 1st 2001 the PS1 sold more than 1,5 million unit in the US and would go on to sell millions more.
Could the Dreamcast really have competed against the PS2 in the high-end while simultaneously fighting with the PS1 as a budget console?

Pretty sure all the consoles did and still do the same, they make money through software.

Nintendo almost always sold their consoles at a profit.

Can confirm this. I remember early tear downs of the first Wii units showed Nintendo was only using $150-170 to produce a Wii with labor costs. They were able to do this because $250 was still a deal compared to the competition and because they are Nintendo and knew their fans would support them.

The only 2 consoles ever sold at a loss were the Virtual Boy and the 3DS (before the new 3DS) when they had to drop the price by $100 to get people to buy it.

2.24 million Sega CD units had been sold by March 1996, after which Sega discontinued it to focus on the Sega Saturn. Retrospective reception is mixed, with praise for some games and functions, but criticism for its dearth of deep games, high price and lack of support from Sega.
By comparison, they sold 30.75 million Genesis/Mega Drives and 9.26 million Saturns. Sega CD wasn't all that popular.
