There was a thread on old VNs a few days ago, but what are your thoughts on YU-NO? I got past the prologue and I've been playing the game back and forth, not sure when I'll finish it because it's really long though 50 year long epilogue

it really grew on me, maybe thanks to the stellar soundtrack and visuals
the epilogue is a mixed bag, the first half feels too long and the second half feels rushed, but at least it looks cool and was intriguing. It really shouldn't be considered an epilogue, just a new chapter.
I really love the rest of the game and the atmosphere, the word comfy is overused but it really applies here. Characters are very likeable and there are so many fun situations and dialogue.

>> No.8159443

I played the game until I was stuck in some kind of cave, then I gave up.
It looked really interesting judging from some screenshot, but I guess I didn't get to the "cool" part, I got filtered during the generic VN mystery adventure.

The gems system could have been a great idea, but I just don't really understand how you branch dimensions. Is it just by talking to people?

I can see why it's been so popular, but it's just too obstuse for me :(

It depends. A divergence point can have one path where you talk to a person and another path in case you didn't.
Other possibilities include using an item or the direction in which you went.
If you reach a divergence point, as indicated by the flashing gem, use one of your jewels. Then try to progress by whatever means necessary. Then jump back to the jewel and try if you can do something else.
Use that approach to scout the map just like you do in a dungeon crawling RPG.

Is there a version that just translates the PC-98 original instead of all these optional patches to replicate it? I remember playing with the Saturn voice acting but I found it jarring that not every character line was dubbed, which I assume is due to some lines being different between computer and console. Also, some of these lines don't really work too well, such as the final sex scene being edited out of the Saturn version I think but the translation includes the Saturn-censored lines before proceeding into the PC-98 version of the scene, it's pretty weird. I know that the remake translation sucks pretty bad tho.

Amazing! This does Yu-No a great service.
One request I do have -I assume you're the one working on this- is to please replace the line "you should be careful she doesn’t evolve into a Snorlax." with "She’ll become a sloth at this rate." from the remake. There does seem to be a handful of lines in the remake localization that are more accurate, and this looks like one of them. The fan-translation tried too hard at this part and as a result it sticks out like a sore thumb. I think it's okay to tweak a few things like that a little bit if it means bringing out the most authentic experience possible. Of course, I could be wrong and there really was a pop culture reference in the original script that had to be removed from the remake, Pokémon was released earlier that year after all.

The text from the Saturn version has been revised by Kanno and served as a base for the voice acting, so the pokemon reference could have been added later.
