The constant cutscenes and boss dialogue fuck up the pacing more than all the mode7s in the real Contra on snes. I've found myself liking this game a lot more lately. Personally I still think Contra 3 is a more challenging and well designed game, but Hard Corps is still massive fun. It could use a bit more level/boss design polish and some better balancing on the characters and weapons, but that doesn't stop it from being an experience full of manic fun and excitement.

I've also grown to really love the aesthetic in this game as well. Its dissonant mix of quirky humor and bio/cyberpunk menace lends it a uniquely engrossing and vibrant atmosphere quite unlike the rest of the franchise. The character designs were handled by anime/manga artist Yasuomi Umetsu, and the music was created by a dream team featuring Michiru Yamane (Castlevania) and Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) among other high profile video game musicians.

One of the games big gimmicks is that it has a number of player characters and a few branching paths for stages

Funny how the Japan version is significantly easier, I thought japs were le hardcore gaming tryhards??

>The Japanese version, titled Contra: The Hard Corps, was made significantly easier than its North American counterpart due to the addition of a life gauge that allows the player to take three hits from an enemy before losing a life. The Japanese version also features unlimited continues, in contrast with the American version, which only allows the player to continue five times.

Same happened to me, then my friend showed me his 1cc replay how he beat it, and I did what he did and now it's fun as fuck, it has like 5 endings and multiple paths and each character is quite different to play. That's the thing. You were 12 and therefore, had much more time than an adult has. As a kid, I could beat much harder games because I had the time to do so. Now, when I play a really challenging game, it not only takes me longer to beat it, but takes more effort as I play the game over weeks (and sometimes have week long breaks) and forget certain patterns. However, I do agree that anyone could beat HC with enough effort.

>> No.8164909

>>8164857

Back then there wasn't youtube to watch how a game is solved or internet guides to explain all the strats. We didn't have emulators with save state practice, slow down or rewind to help figure out strats and patterns. Even beating jrpgs was harder then, never mind something like contra hard corps or ghouls n ghosts, which would filter 99% of the kids at school.
The fact you as an adult with a bigger brain, and tons of resources get filtered by it now is sad.
It doesn't take hundreds of hours of free time anyway if you play smart. I'm not the guy who beat it as a kid, like most I got filtered. But I put 12 hours into it this month and beat it without using a continue or life cheats, and am trying a no death run currently.

>> No.8165969

>>8164909
>The fact you as an adult with a bigger brain, and tons of resources get filtered by it now is sad.
You are just making assumptions. I don't play emulated games, nor do I use rewind features or watch Youtube videos (because that would destroy the experience). I've never even played Hard Corps, either. I beat Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts years later and oh boy, that last level was ridiculous (in timed conditions). However, I really couldn't sustain that effort again to beat, because it is ingrained in my head.

>It doesn't take hundreds of hours of free time anyway if you play smart.
No, did I say it took hundreds of hours? Every game is beatable. However, the argument that "I beat that game when I was 12, why shouldn't you" is null and void. I've beaten some tough games that most people would've dropped at that age.

>Even beating jrpgs was harder then
How so? JRPG's have mostly always been incredibly easy. The only problem you could've had back in the old day was getting lost and not knowing where to go.

>> No.8165994

>>8165969
>I don't learn from others
>I don't use practice tools
>and I don't have time
Time is your issue because you don't care to learn from others or use any practice tools to cut time requirements down. But a 12 yr old kid beating and no-missing Contra HC back when it came out, without the resources we have now, is actually more impressive than someone doing it today
