Are you a bad enough dude to win the ultimate gaming rig, /vr/?

>> No.8153589

>saw these ads for years and years
>never bother with it
>years later I find out it's one of the most scammy scams of all time
>even the few people who managed to win never got their prizes
Sad part is, many gaming mags knew it was BS and still ran the ads since they needed whatever ad money they could get.

>> No.8153591

This thing has always been a scam, and you always just end up getting a bunch of the prize money over a period of time, and even then, you never get all of it. You never actually win the rig.

>> No.8153595

the guy who ran this contest, Mr. Rick Lund, apparently was really named Rick Sundvall and after he quit doing them in 2006 he moved into real estate. so he probably also contributed to the housing bubble. fuck him.

>>8153589
actually most magazines quit running the ads by 2000 after they had gotten increasingly suspicious

>> No.8153605

even when I was a dumb kid I knew it was a scam

>> No.8153609

>>8153595
They were suspicious long before then. They stopped after it started becoming obvious the scam was going to fall apart soon and they didn't want people to remember their name with the scam. I remember by '96 most kids were calling it BS. Do you really believe the editors and publishers couldn't figure it out before then? And yet they kept taking that ad money.

damn, enter them all and save $4! - clearly the smart option right there.

now you know this was scam because he doesn't list Amiga/Atari ST in there

>>8153589
Same. I forgot all about them after like '97 but it turns out they ran all the way up until the Wii release!

>> No.8153682

Should there not be some sort of limit for the profit margin on this sort of thing? If hundreds of thousands of kids enter over the years that is millions of dollars and their total prize money is what, $1,000? "Must be under 30 years old to win" I wonder why that is.

The way they emphasize it's a contest of "skill", I wonder if that's to circumvent some gambling or raffle laws.

There was another version of this that has a NeoGeo, a Genesis with Sega CD and a SNES.

Canada has some law where it can't be a game of pure chance, you'll see a few of these sorts of things where it will say something to the effect of "entrants from Canada will have to answer a question of skill to win"

>> No.8153707

i go tpretty close to winning. I was one of the few people that was able to solve that puzzle and send in my ticket . but the next round of semi finalists had a much harder puzzle that I was unable to solve.

surprised nobody's tracked this guy and asked for an interview to maybe tell his side of the story

>> No.8154001

>>8153854
why would he? he's like that Action 52 guy. some boomer who probably didn't care about vidya except to grift people for money with it.

>> No.8154050

>>8153854
What makes you think he would have a side of the story to tell? All he would say is his competition was legal and legit, that people won cash prizes (he might claim nobody demanded the consoles so he gave cash instead), and that he was never tried or convicted about it. I don't see what sort of side of story he could have for it.

the Action 52 guy was probably working for the Mafia so he couldn't say anything since he didn't want to die in a mysterious drive by shooting

i don't think there's any proof anyone ever actually won this
