What game would you choose to show someone to get them excited about retro gaming?

I have a friend coming over tomorrow who is interested but basically only plays modern flavor of the moment games.

What games perfectly encapsulate what is great about retro gaming in a quick and meaningful way? Bonus points for two player gameplay since I think playing together is a big part of the appeal.

It may be simpler to introduce your friend to a system instead of the concept of “retro.” I’d recommend the Genesis. Then play these and see how it goes
>Golden Axe
>Road Rash 2 or 3 (take turns 1 player don’t do split screen)
>NBA Hangtime
>Fatal Fury 2
>Outrun
>Vapor Trail
>Sonic 2

That’s a good start
