How do you feel about display mods for gameboys or other handhelds?

I did a mod myself for my gameboy. It's fine. I kept my other gameboy original and wouldn't mod it.

Fine. </thread>

All i want on my handhelds is a video output option.

How's the battery life? Do you use a flashcart also? I heard those further drain the battery.

I haven't timed it but haven't found the battery life annoying. I'd estimate maybe 5-6 hours less than unmodded but not unreasonable. I use an EverDrive-GB X7 with it as well.

Lol, terrible. Are you gonna use the handheld as a controller too?

I find them to be soulless. I get the idea in theory, but I just don't understand why you'd bother when you could just get an emulation handheld instead if you wanted "better" picture quality. It's like buying original hardware only to run it through scalers on an LCD. Why wouldn't you just buy a fucking Pi or something and be done with it?

The only one I understood was the AGS-101 mod. It's still an original screen, you aren't doing dumb shit like driving some other random off the shelf IPS display with black borders and integer scaling.

I'm disgusted. Tilting your gameboy all over the place is core the the true hardware experience.

Because I want to play on the original machine the game was originally design and I actually want to looks what's happening on screen.

The gameboy color especially benefits from a backlit screen. Back in the day people had to use these monstrosities.

If you care so much about muh soul you can go play squinting at the Game Boy screen with the worm light just like ye olden days.

Anyone who spent their childhood playing on these knows that it was shit. I'm half convinced the people who parrot all this stuff about the original screen never owned one.

Hell, if you search hard enough you'll find people bitching about how the AGS-101 screen isn't entirely accurate either. So let's not pretend that just because Nintendo put it out as 'original hardware' that it's free of sin. You can play GBA on a DS Lite and it still looks worse than a GBA with IPS mod.

Anyone get nostalgia for just how huge an upgrade the Gameboy Color's display was over the Gameboy Pocket and Original?

The Pocket and Original had such blurry ass displays in motion; the Color on the other had a surprisingly decent refresh rate.

>>8152823
LED lights were a thing when the Color was around so you got to use things like pic-related. They were actually quite comfy.

If you want a backlit screen just use a fucking emulator.

Many such cases.

not what the developer intended

>> No.8153010

Most of them are some stupid high resolution so you don't get the nice screen door effect.

The developer intended that nobody could be able to look what's going on unless you are under the right lighting condition?

I never had an LED light for mine. I had to use lamps. It was shit.

You'd certainly think that was the case with the Wonderswan Color.
