With the sequel announced, now seems like the perfect time for an Outcast thread

Yeah, THQ Nordic published a couple of video a few hours ago. I don't have a good feeling, even though the remake was alright.
Voxels are still peak soul though.

It should be illegal to revive franchise IPs this far removed. This stuff is so cynical

In general I don't see anything wrong with it. One of the problem with Outcast though is that it was technically impressive for its time, with the large open world, which now is nothing new.
There is still the NPCs indicating where to go that it's never be topped though.

I HATE it. fuck you!! Especially when modern studios are zombie studios with no original talent. Just call it something new!! Make new thing!!
Fuck you!!! I hate video games but I LOVE Outcast

Will the sequel use voxels? I'm guessing modern graphics cards are all optimized for polygons.

>> No.8148261

>>8148246
Can't disagree there. It should be the same guys as the original at least, but I'm not keeping my hopes up.
>>8148247
All 3D graphic cards always used polygons. That's why already the original one did not support 3D acceleration and was absurdly heavy to run and the resolution was capped at 640x480.
So no, the new one uses polygon and while looking good it looks generic as fuck.

What is the point of making a sequel to a game people only remember because of its unusual graphics and not using that technology?

>a game people only remember because of its unusual graphics
It's not just that. Outcast is a genuinely great game. It has an unprecedented freedom of movement, good gameplay, likeable character, interesting scenario and a wonderful soundtrack.
If it wouldn't have been almost impossible to run decently on the majority of PCs of the time it would have been more popular.

Tim Schafer already had a number of critically acclaimed titles under his belt by the time Psychonauts 2 was greenlit. I wouldn't put money on that assumption.

Are we forgetting 3.3 million all of a sudden? There were also a bunch of random games that were left incomplete released between 3.3 million dollar man and psychonauts 2. He became a mockery of the industry, so much so that running with scissors mocked him in the last expansion of Postal 2.

Balan was a new IP and Yuki Naka was less responsible for Nights than he is given credit for. Nights already has a sequel by original devs, and it's good.
The creators of Outcast are more passionate about the IP than any fan. If the sequel sucks, it wont be because it's a cash grab or the developers don't understand the IP. It will be because of poor project management choices.

Ah yes, the same devs who only exist due to Postal 2 roasting another for milking their cash cow. Real classy.

This game is top kino. The original intro movie alone still holds up today, compare it to the remake one which looks like ass and totally misses the subtle details of the original. Why can't modern devs even understand what made the original good when doing remakes.

>> No.8160104

I remember being unable to run this game very well as a kid, unsurprisingly. I have it and its remake on GOG, but of course have not touched them. Judging by the thread I guess I'd better go back and check it out. I remember being amazed by the demo back in the day, but I figured it was just a combination of the graphical gimmick and me being a dumb child.

It probably still holds up. The only unfortunate thing about this game is how it keeps getting easier the more you progress. Enemies deal less damage and have less health the more you advance in the story while you can keep upgrading your weapons and go full genocide with them.

what games were those anon? I don't follow anything about that company. I also don't really get the backlash about >3.3 million, as it was just people being mad about that guy's stupid cartoon face, as if suddenly a project pitched at 400k being then 8x overfunded meant that the game would be "ten times better" (whatever that's supposed to mean).

>It probably still holds up.
It does very well. Yes, the combat has never been the strong point of the game, but you already have an Assassin's Creed tier freedom of movement, and plenty of gadgets to plan your actions in different ways. Artistically it's still good, the use of fog to cover the draw distance works very well and make you feel the places are much larger than they actually are.
The 1.1 version has been updated with support for high resolution and gamepads, so it looks and control really well.
Even Second Contact is a 1:1 copy of the original, graphics (and movies) aside. They didn't need to change anything else and it still works.
