Looks neat, dig the vibe of it. Not a fan of pixel-perfect bullet hell, and this looks just hard, not fractal pattern insane. Also love multistage bosses, especially when it's from or showing damage...metal slug does that a lot, wish more games did.

these games were designed for 29 inch arcade monitors in tate mode sitting right in front of you. to get the equivalent screen space on a 16:9 pc monitor in standard yoko mode on a vert, it would need to be like 43 inches. of course you cant see shit in a fucking 27 inch yoko setup, its like playing a game on a fucking postage stamp. unfortunately thats exactly what most emulating people seem to do

I use Game Maker Studio (started out with a pirated version of an older version, then switched to Studio when it was on sale ages ago). I think it's a pretty good little engine for making 2d games and is a great place to learn. Go for it, anon!

Not much to get started, but you'll want to learn as you go if you want to have decent freedom to make what you want.

I think a beginner level programming course is a nice place to start and get your feet wet, but even just working through some tutorials online would be a great way to start learning (I did a little of both).

There's an old "shmup engine" for gamemaker made by a dude who used to frequent the systems11 forum. Gmosse. Something between a template and an engine, contains most of the boring stuff like options menus and shit already set up for you so you can start editing stuff right away and having fun. Would recommend looking that up if you do get into shmups in GM.

theoretically there's a drag and drop that is robust enough to make a shooter. basic options for "move this fast" "create this projectile" "blow up when you hit this" etc
if you wanted to make something more complicated you would probably switch to coding though. depends on whether you want to make a fun little thing for yourself or a big wide release game

I'm probably a broken record when it comes to this, but: you can dislike games, but try to at least reach that conclusion though experience and actual knowledge. It's particularly a problem when oversimplified dismissal of games happens in public chats which in turn can make the readers assume what was said about the game and continue that cycle

The level designs are better than Final for the most part (maybe due to Final being in the shitty PS2 'cinematic' age), though I prefer finals stages to a lot.
The only issue is effects being a bit too much and being distracting.
Game looks amazing once you enable the HQ textures in the ini file on PC, which is a failing it isn't in by default but pretty par for the course for the course for Japanese devs in PC. It looks good on PS4 too apparently.
Almost every checkpoint in the game is excellently designed (exception is on stage 2 r-typer and harder difficulty); I can't think of a game where they're better designed (Though it helps it has speed selection rather than speed power ups)

The laser plain sucks. In Darius old and new ver, you should just stick to the triple shot and avoid upping your power. In Extra you should upgrade anyway and just grit through a bad stage or two since you need the wave by the end. For laser I find it good to have a slow auto, or even just tap, because the shot limit for it is rough.
