Absolutely laughable dub, holy shit. Also this is an attempt to marry Silent Hill with J-horror with a few gimmicks added, and the only good thing is that the face modeling is convincing sometimes.

Siren is good even though it's obviously not perfect idk why it's fashionable to hate on it so much

FS being comically convoluted and obtuse even by Toyama's admission is why - the whole game is basically a giant casual filter.

I like it exactly for that, though. It's never going to be one of my favorite games, but it feels expansive and not contrived about it. Obtuse, yes, extremely, but not contrived.

Very cool game, I don't play dubs because I'm not a simp.

the mission structure is interesting but it neutered the horror aspect for me pretty quickly. Just came to think of it as a level based puzzle game with a horror aesthetic.

>but it neutered the horror aspect for me pretty quickly. Just came to think of it as a level based puzzle game with a horror aesthetic.
this, the sightjacking mechanic is brilliant and spooky, but the game could have benefited from a more traditional horror game structure, like having fewer characters to control, no escort missions, ditch the mission structure (seriously the words "mission complete" have no business being in a game attempting to be scary)
if it wanted to be a stealth game maybe it could have modeled itself more after MGS (without the codec party chat of course)
it's really a shame because it could have been up there with silent hill and fatal frame

>> No.8148026

>>8146395
you could apply this to every horror game ever
the guns in resident evil neuter the horror aspect
the healing items and invincibility power ups in silent hill neuter the horror aspect
what works for you? slender?

I thought it was Siren, but I remember playing a PS2 horror game at a friend's place. It was Japanese in setting and the player character was a shrine maiden sent to purify a haunted place. It was pretty good from the start, but I didn't get far because playing single player games was not ideal in social settings. I remember throwing charms to progress through the game, I thought it was Siren but I guess not. I will still try to get further into Siren this coming October.

I sold this game literally only a couple days after it released. Probably the biggest buyer's regret I've had in my 35 years of gaming.

>want to download Siren 2 and play on modded PS2
>the iso file size is more than my black DVDs can hold
Wat do? Just get a DVD that holds more data? Never run into this issue before.

>> No.8151747

You need a dual-layer DVD. They can fit something like 8gb. There were a few games that used it, Gran Turismo 4 most notably. But people compressed the audio and repacked the rom so that it fits on a regular one too.

Or look for Siren repacks alternatively, there probably are some around if you don't mind compressed/cut shit

>> No.8151754

>>8149858
I'd imagine that scene groups probably put out a single layer dvd version. If you can find it.

That's hilariously reductive of what the other anon said. And I agree myself, the mission structure prevents any sustained tension by making everything bite sized essentially. Guns in Resi and healing items (what fucking invincibility items?) in SH are designed as part of the experience. They also work well towards the games goals of being tense. The mission based structure actually works against Siren.

the film genre of horror set in japan
siren is very clearly inspired by films like the ring, down to having a shitty american remake starring boring white people. (the game was still made in japan, but it's presented as an american found footage movie.)

I quite like the dub even though it's shit. It's more memorable than generic American VA #204920940. 2's dub was pretty much perfect though. English speaking Japanese people with Japanese accents. Perfection.

That's it! The videos match up to what I remembered. It was pretty cool and a great setup for horror in setting and scenario.

The mainline games get all the attention, but I think the side titles are pretty good too. They do something different, but they do take advantage of the universe created by the mainline games. Capcom still brings it with the cuties.
