It was better than Sonic Adventure.

It was too short.

I just beat it on my Saturn and I realized there's an extremely annoying bug in the original version (at least on my Japanese disk, please tell me they fixed this in the US release):

if you come in first place, find a chaos emerald, AND challenge the boss in the same round, then once you beat the boss it will skip the "Sonic got an emerald!" screen and will not register any of the emeralds you picked up. You will have to do the emerald run and the token run separately, you cannot combine them.

In the PC/gems port, you could theoretically beat the entire game with just one round per level. Since the game is so short, and frankly pretty easy, doing that actually felt like an accomplishment and was a way to add challenge to the game. But the Saturn (JP at least) version requires you to do at least two runs for each level.

Seems like a minor complaint, but if you've played the game before, challenge runs like that are gonna be more important, and there's no way this was intentional, the game just outright doesn't recognize that you've gotten the emeralds, like it skips the check.

Well apparently the US version was the first release, so this bug is in all of them.

Thank you for saying this anon. I played the Saturn version after the PC version and just assumed they added that in the PC port.

Oh wait, I just realized you said this applies to your JP version as well. Never mind then I guess it just isn’t in the Saturn original :(

I don't think it was intentional. It looks like they just forgot to run the "you got the emeralds!" screen after showing the victory screen, so it skips the emerald check. It's programmed to go straight from the victory screen to the main menu basically.

Thinking about the Japanese publishers who played this game and listened to the music before release and approved of it for sale.

I’m glad they did. Europop is the absolute peak of music.

Yeah its not particularly good but as a Saturn fan back in the day I have a soft spot for it although more for its technical accomplishments. It also seems like more people played the later ports to PC, PS2 and Gamecube which broke the games coloured lighting although mods of PC can fix that.

Playing the PC version it made me hope that all Saturn games looked as good as it did. But then I came to find most games were 2D, 2D.5, or 3D on rails.

it's the perfect example of a remake/port/multiplat being better in every way on every other system but the Saturn version has some bullshit going on with lights or water or some shit so it's objectively superior. Same shit on this board with quake and powerslave.

It's an acquired taste. The controls were wonky and hard to use, and the main protagonist was the most difficult character to use ingame, and it was really short, but at least they tried to come up with their own thing rather than just ripping off Mario Kart.
When you get used to its gameplay it becomes a fun exploration-based platform/racing hybrid game with a SOULFUL 90s europop soundtrack, great graphics for its time, and some good level design.

Sonic is basically the easiest. The disappointing thing was that Tails controlled like ass. Knuckles is okay. Sonic was broken though because his double jump is OP and can get ahead of basically every character, jump over obstacles, skip portions of the level, and so on. All good fun of course, but there's basically no reason to use any other character. I like mecha knuckles a lot for some reason, he seems to have the smoothest turning.
