[SPOILER] No.8139747[SPOILER]  [Reply] [Original]

Is Mother worth playing? I've heard you should start with EarthBound, but I've never played the series and I'd rather play them chronologically, I've read that it is difficult to emulate and that there wasn't an english translation, has anyone here played any of the games? I just wanna know what the deal is with this series

>> No.8139856

Absolutely. It's short for an RPG (20 hours) and you'll appreciate what comes after much more.

There is an English translation. And official, yet unreleased one.

>difficult to emulate
No? you can use nestopia or whatever emulator and it runs fine, grab a fan translation and go to town;
It's a fairly decent JRPG for it's time, the setting and music are the highlights and there's even the 25th Anniversary Edition if you can't stomach the dated mechanics

>> No.8139886

Absolutely worth playing. It's got charm and character for days.
It's not hard to emulate at all and it has romhacks which translate it well and uncensors graphics. I recommend using Mother Restored.

Mother 1 is fine, but not amazing. If you like EarthBound, it's worth playing just to see how less-refined Mother is, and gain a higher appreciation for EB. Mother 1 isn't bad, but EarthBound does literally everything far-better. As for Mother itself? Ninendo made a mostly amateurish rip-off of Dragon Quest 3 with some good original moments. The biggest flaws of Mother is the very-high enemy encounter rates, large confusing maps, and nonsense like Mt Itoh. It was clearly a flawed but honest attempt to make something good. Your enjoyment of this game will be determined by how much patience you have. By the way, I'm also reccommending Dragon Quest 3, because it's a much better game than Mother 1, and it will make you appreciate both Mother and EarthBound :^)

Mother is a neat historical artifact. The maps are bad, the encounter rate is bonkers, the battles and the NES Era translation don't communicate the charm of the other entries to the game. It's still cute and neat. Play an easy patch just to see it if you really want to.

Speaking of restoration romhacks, I'm gonna throw this one out there as well: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6140/

I've seen an anon or two talk about this recently. Guessing it's pretty much MaternalBound Redux but even more smoothed out?

It don't know how much of it is based on MaternalBound Redux even though the readme says it supposedly borrows from it. It's more focused on restoring EarthBound to be more like Mother 2. It's not the first hack that does this, but seems to be the most extensive so far. I even brings back the original title screen.

I was thinking about playing this, but it has the original terrible grinding, right?

The grinding is really overblown IMO.

mother 1 and 2 are bad versions of early DQ/FF with a neat setting and some occasional decent writing. you suffer through the gameplay for the story
3 at least has quirky XD gameplay to go with the quirky XD cast. more pleasant to play too, since they decided to skew the enemy balance towards too easy rather than too hard

Does it matter? It’s a fucking NES game.

It references and links to the original MaternalBound hack, so it appears to be based on the older version, not Redux.

which was taken straight from MaternalBound, not even his work.

You should start chronologically. Just play the base game (Earth Bound, or recently aka, EarthBound Beginnings) with none of those gay difficulty-reducing patches. Also, try to avoid using the running button.

Also, Anna is best girl, and anyone who draws Ninten with a front-facing bandana must have been molested or something.

The only bad thing about Mother 1 is that it was grindy (typical for the time though) and that a lot of the same beats it hits are repeated again in 2 which is either a cool thing or an annoying thing for you since 2 is better in just about every way.

I think I will skip Mother then if its a grindfest, I don't have enough time to play everything so I'll play EarthBound and revisit the others later. I don't know how to emulate famicom/GBA games for one and the game sounds interesting but too grindy for me atm. I just wanted to figure out why the game is called Mother, I thought it would be a psychological exploration of the maternal association we have with planet Earth but if as anons itt have said, the same themes are again explored in the sequel then I guess I'm not missing much taking the american approach to this series.

Thanks

if you grind, you'll be overlevveled and steamroll everything. Fighting the encounters as they come works out just fine, especially with how many there are. Grinding is only a necessity in hacks where the encounters are reduced since you get less XP than you're supposed to. The game is tightly balanced. Not to say it's well balanced, but it IS balanced so long as you don't run from every battle and keep on top of your equipment.
>>8140032
Sure, it's inspired by Dragon Quest, but so is Final Fantasy, Pokemon and every other JRPG series. It's the same way that Dragon Quest is inspired by Ultima, which is inspired by tabletop RPGs. That's how media works; nothing is wholly original and it's reductive to present Mother as a Dragon Quest fangame when that's true of nearly everything else in the genre.

>> No.8141746

>>8141430

The main thing is that you probably shouldn't play Mother 3 without first playing Earthbound, since their stories are relatively intimately tied together in certain ways. Mother starts the story that the other two games continue, so ideally you'd experience that too, but if you're going to skip any of them then that's the one to skip.

I don't know that you're going to get any kind of psychological exploration of anything from any of the games, but oh well, they've certainly got plenty of charm regardless.

if you like hard grindy nes rpgs then go for mother, if you want something earlier go for earthbound
