Disgaea 1: although fundamentally cringe hot topic tier setting and characters, it was still a very genuine work of art. It was fun and unique. I love it so much bros.
Disgaea 2: my favorite of the series. Somewhat generic anime story but at least most of the main party were usually serious enough for me to not want me to dissociate through cut scenes. Wasn’t a fan of Axel. I liked the green overworld, it was cozy.
Disgaea 3: horrible. Went full blown cringe. Every single character was annoying. Tried to recapture the edgy but quirky vibe of the first game but failed to produce anything of substance.
Disgaea 4: fun game. I liked the cheesy sardine jokes. It didn’t take itself seriously and that was fine because the gameplay was solid.
Disgaea 5: worst story, completely generic shonen-shit. However the gameplay was solid.
Disgaea 6: aborted mobile gatcha game

Makai Kingdom: i felt it was a little too easy, but overall it was still a decent experiment from NIS. The vehicles were fun, loved riding tanks and mechas

La Pucelle Tactics: essentially the prototype for Disgaea. Check it out if you haven’t already. Lead artist loved THICC thighs and the character design showed it. He was fired soon into the development of Disgaea and thats why its fulled of lolis (pedos get the rope).

Simple themes and straightforward character growth with a mostly likable cast. It isn't Shakespeare, but it beats the hell out of any of the sequels by simply being competent.

Overlevel Laharl. Have 5 casters cast braveheart until he gets double damage. Spread out your lower level characters so that Baal can only kill one per turn. After Laharl attacks, have a weak character pick him up so he can’t get hurt. This way you get at least 6 turns where your main damage dealer doesn’t get hurt. If your main can take multiple hits, you can keep a high level healer out of range so that baal doesn’t target it.

At its core, it's an episodic story where all the episodes are at least somewhat good.
The character interactions are interesting and well written. Laharl has a development that's clearly there, but out of the way enough to seem subtle and interesting.
The same goes for the "main plot", which frequently reminds you of it's presence, but always in a subtle or joking way until the final chapter.
Basically, when you have characters as pleasant as these, you can get a good story by just moving the plot as far out of the way as you can and letting the story be entirely carried by their interactions.

Baal was extremely easy in the first game, you only really needed three super robot suits. In D5 he's a major fucking piece of shit. First, you get hit for 5M damage three times as soon as you get an unit out of the panel, then you have those netherworld effects going off everywhere and you not only have to face his three copies but also some cores.

Were you asleep when they go to space and start introducing sci-fi plot devices? I have liked the setting and story up to that point, but all the sci-fi shit comes way out of nowhere. It is like Soul Eater trying to pull off sci-fi in the middle of its hell and after life setting. I get Nippon Ichi wanted to have their cake and eat it, too, but the sci-fi shit clashes badly with what it tried to do with the setting ot the game. Don't know if other Nippon Ichi games tried to mix sci-fi, I think La Pucelle and the Marl Kingdom games stuck to their European fairy tale setting.

Maybe, but NIS has pretty much abandoned the Playstation as of a few years ago when they saw 90% of the their sales went to the Switch. They obviously seem to put extra effort into their switch releases. Disgaea 1 for Switch got HD textures, sprites, and character art (even though they forgot to change the name of the game from Disgaea PC in the credits lol).

The interactions between the cast. Etna, Flonne and Laharl are a great trio, they even managed to make me enjoy DD2.
