Remember when /vr/ rightfully hated HL for killing the genre.
And now this happens.
Jannies can't handle when people hate the game.

Half Life has great game design. Fuck wandering around shitty bloated maps looking for card keys in the pre-HL shooters.

HL sucks.
Inferior to any major retro fps and immersive sims.

/vr/ always called it overrated, cope.

HL replaces interesting level design with interesting cinematic scripting. A novel new addition to game storytelling, but not much for play value, especially as they just waste time on replays.

The key hunting and switch fucking can be bad in some games, but that's true of any mechanic. The most well-designed maze levels in different shooters offer the fun of a more dynamic playthrough as well as offering more replay value in the form of secrets.

The idea that something "killed a genre" is a pretty stupid reason to hate any game.

I find this to be surface level at best. That's like saying you won't have nearly as much fun reading a book a second time.

There's plenty of value to be added to your play enjoyment with a good story. I mean, that's kind of the entire point of the now dead RPG genre.

Itwasn't /vr/ it was one guy who spammed and spammed because he had nothing to do with his life. And I wouldn't be surprised if that was you, OP. Get over it. HL still has retro shooter design at its core and its pointless to say it "killed the genre" when it was never dead to begin with. People have made retro styled shooters all the way back from Serious Sam to countless indie titles being pumped out today. Shut the fuck up and consider enjoying games instead of whining about them like a /v/tard

Scripted gameplay? Outside of a few specific circumstances, you're pretty free to approach Half Life at any angle.

>> No.8134358

>>8134279
Nah HL still has interesting level design, you are just overexaggerating the cinematic bits which mostly dies off after the half hour mark.

You don't need someone to convince you. If you play it more than once you'll start noticing its flaws. When you come back to it as a veteran gamer, it'll feel mediocre compared to the real classics.

I think Doom is real medicore, so your championing kinda feels off to me. Doom II is a lot more fairly rated though. Bad level design, and archviles are a pain, but still fun.
Not the anon you replied to btw, just saying that not everyone shares your opinion about the "real classics".
